VALVES
Data Sheet
Pressure Restricting Angle Valves
with Breakable Link
Pressure restricting valves are used when flowing water pressure needs to be
controlled. They are angle valves with preset orifices which restrict the volume
of water and thereby lower the pressure of the flowing water.

Technical Information
Pressure Restricting Valves
• Underwriters
Listed and New York City Board of Standards and Appeals approval # MEA 54-07-E
• Restricts inlet pressure from 70 PSI (483 kPa) up to a maximum of 175 PSI (1207 kPa), down to an outlet pressure of 65, 80 or
100 PSI (448. 552 or 690 kPa).
• Outlet pressures may be set below 65 PSI (448 lPa) when authorized by the local authority having jurisdiction.
• NFPA requires restricting valves where the inlet pressure exceeds 100 PSI. Unlike the pressure regulating type of valve, the re-
stricting valve has no effect on the static pressure of a system.
• The restricting device can be manually by-passed if required by opening the valve fully. This is accomplished by breaking the
"breakable link", which allows the valve stem to rise to the full open position.
• The breakable link also serves as a simple indication of the valve condition and status. If the valve is opened without breaking the
link, the valve will resume its previous position and no resetting is necessary.

Pressure and Settings Charts

This graph is based on using 75' of 1½" rubber lined hose and a ½" discharge nozzle to obtain outlet pressures of 65, 80 or
100 PSI.

This graph is based on using 50' of 2½" rubber lined hose and a 1-1/8" discharge nozzle to obtain outlet pressures of 65, 80 or
100 PSI.

System Sensor’s OSY2 is used to monitor the open

position of an Outside Screw and Yoke (OS&Y) type

gate valve.

Features Robust Construction. The OSY2 consists of a rugged housing,

• NEMA 3R rated enclosure intended for indoor and outdoor use. When installed with the
actuator in the vertical position, the OSY2 is NEMA 3R rated per UL.
• User-friendly mounting bracket fits newer valve yokes
• Single side conduit entry does not require right angle fittings Application Flexibility. The OSY2 features a user-friendly
• Adjustable length actuator eliminates the need for cutting the shaft mounting bracket and adjustable shaft to permit mounting to most
OS&Y valves, ranging in size from 1˝ to 12˝. Its right angle design
• Accommodates up to 12 AWG wire and wide bracket span provides maximum clearance for valve
• Three position switch monitors vandal and valve close signals components, to accommodate troublesome valves. Removing the
• Two SPDT contacts are enclosed in a durable terminal block for OSY2’s gate valve bracket allows the unit to monitor side-bracket
added strength style pressure reducing valves.

• 100% synchronization activates both alarm panel and local bell Simplified Operation. Installation is made easier with the
simultaneously OSY2’s single side conduit entrance. By providing a direct conduit
pathway to the electrical source, right angle fittings are not required.
Installation is further simplified by the OSY2’s adjustable length
actuator, which eliminates the need for cutting the shaft.

Reliable Performance. The OSY2 is equipped with tamper

resistant cover screws to prevent unauthorized entry. Inside, two sets
of SPDT (Form C) synchronized switches are enclosed in a durable
terminal block to assure reliable performance.

...Method Of Statement
1 Fire Extinguishers
1.1 Dry Powder Extinguishers

Dry powder fire extinguishers are excellent all-round fire extinguishers,

often recommended for use on vehicles and in the home. All powder fire
extinguishers are red with a blue panel, are either ABC or BC rated and
are safe to be used on fires involving electrical equipment. (Remember to
look for the electrical safety pictogram. Dry powder extinguishers are not
suitable for use in enclosed spaces such as offices, hotels, schools, etc, as
the fire-fighting agent creates a cloud that can obscure vision. The
contents may also create breathing problems.

1.2 How Dry Powder Fire Extinguishers Work

Dry powder fire extinguishers contain an extinguishing agent, which is

propelled out of the extinguisher body by a compressed, non-flammable
gas. The agent forms a ‘blanket’ over the fire, smothering it and
preventing re-ignition. All used powder residue must be cleaned away
and properly disposed of once the fire is extinguished. Sodium
bicarbonate is an effective fire extinguishing agent as it decomposes at
158 degrees F, releasing CO2 which starves the fire of oxygen.

1.3 Three Main Types of Dry Powder Extinguishers

1. ABC rated or multi-purpose powder, which contain ammonium

phosphate
2. BC rated extinguishers, containing potassium bicarbonate or
sodium bicarbonate (otherwise known as bicarbonate of soda or
baking soda!) Some BC rated powder fire extinguishers contain
Monnex. The pressurizing gas is usually nitrogen
3. A and D rated graphite powder fire extinguishers are usually used
only in Class D fires Both types of non-graphite dry powder
extinguisher are potentially corrosive to soft metal such as
aluminum, and can also be abrasive when sprayed.

1.4 Dry Powder Extinguishers and Water

Unfortunately, the additional benefit of ABC rated dry powder fire

extinguishers being able to tackle flammable gas fires also has a major
...Method Of Statement
drawback. Ammonium phosphate can react with any water present to
form phosphoric acid, which is corrosive and can seep into even the
slightest cracks in equipment.

For this reason, dry chemical ABC rated fire extinguishers should not be
used on sensitive electrical equipment such as computers, switch
installations, scientific instruments or aircraft, if other fire extinguishing
options are available.
Left in place, powder will draw moisture from the air and a common
example of corrosion will be the chrome on tools being replaced with rust.

In the event of an emergency when only a dry powder fire extinguisher is

available, however, always remember that electrical equipment can be
replaced, a human life cannot. If in doubt, get out, stay out and call the
fire brigade immediately.

1.5 CO2 Fire Extinguishers

CO2 fire extinguishers (carbon dioxide) are the only fire extinguisher
recommended for fires involving electrical equipment. CO2 is safe to use
on and around electrical equipment, as the gas itself is non-conductive,
and once used, there is no sticky foam or messy powder left behind. They
are also effective on Class B fires (flammable liquids).

Carbon dioxide fire extinguishers are painted bright red with a black
panel above the operating instructions. They have a distinctive horn-
shaped nozzle at the side on the smaller models with 5kgs and above
having a hose and horn.

1.6 How Carbon Dioxide Fire Extinguishers Work

CO2 extinguishers store carbon dioxide gas under great pressure (55 bar
or 825psi), where the gas becomes a liquid. When you operate the fire
extinguisher levers, the pressure is released; the CO2 pressure is reduced
by the diffuser (horn) and expands back into a gas, rapidly cooling the
surrounding air.

This process is so fast, it can cause ice to form on the horn, so never hold a
CO2 fire extinguisher by the horn to avoid freezing your skin. To be most
effective, a carbon dioxide fire extinguisher should be used no closer than
3 feet and no further than 8 feet from the fire itself.
...Method Of Statement
For the UK, they are commonly made in two sizes, 2kg and 5kg. The
compressed gas required an extremely thick cylinder so many buyers
prefer super-strong aluminum rather than heavier steel models, so that
their staff can lift and use the CO2 extinguishers more easily. Steel is
normally used for marine extinguishers although many of the cheap
imports are made from steel.

The 2kg models tend to have a swivel horn, which must not be held during
operation to avoid freezing your hands. The 5kg models usually feature a
hose with the horn attached with the horn normally having a handle.

1.7 CO2 Fire Extinguishers and Electricity

CO2 fire extinguishers are safe to use on fires in, on or around electrical
equipment and live cables. CO2 gas is dry, inert in air, and leaves behind
no residue that will affect electrical equipment’s future operation. So, you
will often find a CO2 fire extinguisher next to precious electrical
equipment, from switchgear to mobile discos.

In most office, workplace, factory or warehouse situations, the best

combination is to have a water additive or foam unit alongside your CO2
extinguisher, for maximum fire fighting ability.

1.8 Carbon Dioxide Fire Extinguishers and Other Fire Classes

CO2 fire extinguishers should not be used on Class D fires, involving

flammable metals. The CO2 gas reacts with many volatile metals, and as
with other non-D rated extinguishers, can also blow burning metal over a
wide area, making the situation worse. And it is not affective on Class A
fires such as paper, wood or cloth.

1.9 Carbon Dioxide Fire Extinguisher Pressure Gauges

CO2 fire extinguishers do not have pressure gauges, as the gas is

condensed in the cylinder. The only way to assess if a CO2 fire extinguisher
is empty is to weigh it. The gross weight (G W) is stamped into the metal of
the cylinder shoulder with other information. To assess how full your CO2
fire extinguisher is, weigh it (without the swivel horn) and compare this to
the stamped gross weight.
...Method Of Statement
However, rather than take the risk of a part-used fire extinguisher, or have
the expense of a call-out visit and factory refilling or service exchange, it is
often more cost effective to replace a used CO2 fire extinguisher with a
new one. Expert firms or your local Civic Amenity Centre (the local dump)
will be happy to recycle your old CO2 fire extinguisher.

2 Fire Hose Reel

2.1 General Instructions for Use

Always read the instruction plate before use, to ensure that you have
selected the correct extinguisher for the fire you intend to fight.

2.2 Operation

There is two ways of operation fire hose reel:

• Automatic Hose reel- pull out the hose for 2 m or 3 m and the water
is automatically turned on. Control the discharge by using the
nozzle in Jet/spry/Off mode

• Manual Hose Reel- to turn on the water, open the inlet valve, before
running out the hose to location the fire. Control the discharge by
using the nozzle in Jet/spry/Off mode

Ensure that you are positioned between the fire and safe exit/escape
route

Apply the water jet to the base of the fire in short sweeping burst keeping
out the smoke and steam produced.

Warning there is a continuous supply of water to the hose reel. Do not fight
the fire size increases or for too long – beware of your surrounding and
local conditions.

3 Sprinkler System
Sprinkler system is designed to the requirement of NFPA-13, Standard for
Installation of Sprinkler Systems.

The sprinkler system is provided for protection of the Fire Pump room. The
sprinkler system consists of a network of aboveground piping, sprinkler
...Method Of Statement
heads, supervised isolation valve, and water flow switch. The sprinkler
heads are located evenly and in such a manner that water is discharged
in defined spray patterns covering the entire surface area of the hazard
protected. The sprinkler heads senses the heat generated by fire and burst
at a pre-determined temperature. This bursting creates a pressure drop in
the piping. The pressure switch is activated, starting the electric motor
pump first. In case the electric motor pump fails, the standby diesel
engine pump comes into operation and supplies adequate water to the
sprinkler system. When the system is activated the flow switch located on
the piping gives a signal to the fire alarm control panel. Also a
mechanical alarm is generated by means of water flowing through the
water motor gong located externally. The system is also connected to a
breeching inlet located outside the premises in the event of fire, the fire
department or civil defense personnel is required to pump water into the
system.

3.1 Glass Bulb Detector / Sprinkler Heads

3.1.1 Description

Sprinkler system is designed to the requirement of NFPA-13, Standard for

Installation of Sprinkler Systems.

3.1.2 Design Parameters

Design density as per NFPA-13 is 6.1 lpm/m2 for a minimum area of 139m2
and the minimum pressure at the remotest sprinkler heads is 0.5 bars.

3.1.3 Operation

The operating mechanism of glass bulb sprinkler consists of a frangible

glass bulb and a spring seal to close waterway. The bulb contains a liquid
and a small air bubble. Heat from a fire causes the liquid to expand and
the bubble to disappear. Beyond this point of liquid expansions, the bulb
bursts allowing the sprinkler to open. Water then discharges freely striking
the deflector. Then it is distributed in a pattern determined by the
particular sprinkler deflector.
...Method Of Statement
3.2 Alarm Check Valve

3.2.1 Operation

The valve construction incorporates a rubber clapper and operates on

basis of differential pressure. Pressure in the system above the clapper is
always greater than below. A bypass can accommodate minor pressure
surges but it is recommended that a retard chamber be installed to
account for any variable pressure conditions.

When a sprinkler operates or a test is in progress, the clapper lifts to allow

a flow of water into the system and activates the alarm gong and
pressure switches (if fitted). Alarms will continue to sound until the shut off
valve on the supply side of the system is closed. Always ensure the shut off
valve is monitored and will set off an alarm if tampered with.

3.2.2 Trim Packages

Trim Packages Available:

1. Vertical trim for the Alarm Check Valve installed vertically.

2. Horizontal trim configuration for the Alarm Check Valve installed
horizontally.

Trim Packages Include:

1. All required pipe and fittings

2. All standard trim accessories
3. All required gauges

3.2.3 Optional Accessories:

Retard Chamber - Required when the Alarm Check Valve is installed in

variable pressure installation in order to reduce the possibility of false
alarm.

Water Motor Alarm - The Alarm Check Valve is designed to activate a

mechanical cal alarm when a flow of water (such as an sprinkler) cause
the alarm check’s clapper to lift from its seat.
...Method Of Statement
Alarm Pressure Switch - The Alarm Check Valve is designed to allow the
installation of pressure switches to activate electric alarms and control
panels when a flow of water (such as an open sprinkler) causes the alarm
check’s clapper to lift from its seat.

3.2.4 Installation

Inlet and outlet flanges can be provided to ANSI DIN BS or JIS Standards
(specify when during) Valves Should be installed in accordance with NFPA
or other appropriate local standards in accordance with the authority
having jurisdiction. Connecting piping should be flushed clean of dirt and
all other materials that may interface with proper operation of the system
to ensure that the system has a proper flow of clean uncontaminated
water. Make Sure that the direction of flow indicated by the arrow is in the
correct direction. Check to ensure that the clapper can move freely and
is clear of all associated piping.

The System should be activated in the following sequence

1. Close the system control valve.

2. Close the alarm line control valve.
3. Open inspectors check valve.
4. Slowly open the system valve
5. (*Rapid opening of the control valve may cause water hammer
and allow air to be trapped in the system*)
6. Continue to fill the system until water flows from the test orifice of the
check valve.
7. Close the inspectors test valve
8. Fully open the system control valve and observe the pressure
gauge until system pressure is achieved. Conduct a main drain test.
9. Open the alarm control valve.
10. Conduct alarm device test
11. Seal, Lock and Secure the system control valve in accordance with
the local regulations of the authority having jurisdiction.
...Method Of Statement
12. If connected to a central alarm or fire department - promptly inform
the appropriate personnel.

3.2.5 Testing

System must periodically test in accordance with the authority having

jurisdiction.
NEVER CLOSE THE SYSTEM CONTROL VALVE WITHOUT INFORMING:

The building owner the local Fire Department and all other appropriate
authorities. NFPA 25 recommends testing at least 4 times per year. Other
Authorities having jurisdiction may have different regulations and the user
should ensure that frequent tests are conducted strictly in accordance
with local regulations.

3.2.6 Maintenance
The owner is responsible for the proper operation of the system and all
related components and accessories NFPA 24 recommends periodic
maintenance procedures and the local authority having jurisdiction may
have additional requirements.

The Alarm Check Valve has been carefully constructed from the superior
quality materials in order to give trouble free service and proper operation
and should be routinely checked to ensure proper operation.

The following routine maintenance inspections should be undertaken.

Clapper

The rubber clapper facing should be checked for wear or damaged and
should be free from all external matter or materials. If damage is observed
it should be immediately replaced.

All dirt or extraneous matter should be carefully cleaned from the surface.
Do not use solvent or any hydrocarbon derivatives for cleaning purposes.
If in doubt replace completely.
...Method Of Statement
Seat Ring

Check the seat ring for dirt and damage to the seating surfaces and
thoroughly clean of all dirt and extraneous matter. Seat ring damage
could lead to a failure of the system to operate in a fire condition.

In the case of any damage to the seat ring which may cause on-
operation of the system, the valve should be replaced.

Retard Chamber

Check that the outlet and inlet orifices are free from dirt and extraneous
matter and are undamaged and clean all elements thoroughly before
replacing in service.

Bypass Line

The Bypass line must be undamaged and free of any dirt and extraneous
matter. Clean out before replacing in service. The whole system should be
periodically checked to ensure proper function.

Care should be taken to inspect for physical damage and system leaks.
The fire protection piping and all components are integral parts of a
building safety system to protect life and proper operation is a function
correct design, installation, and carefully conducted periodic
maintenance.

3.2.7 Retard Chamber

The retard chamber is installed to cater for fluctuations in water supply

pressures. Increased pressures water enters the intermediate chamber
and fills the retard chamber. Water then drains through the retard
chamber through a restricted orifice. Constant operation of the retard
chamber may indicate problems with the system and should be
investigated.

During a fire condition or system testing, water flows into intermediate and
retard chambers, activating the water motor alarm and other signaling
devices and then the system operates as normal.

Waterflow Detectors, Vane Type
Waterflow detectors installed in sprinkler systems provide an electrical alarm when a flow of water from the system equals or exceeds
that of a single sprinkler. They can be used with either open or closed signaling circuits.
They may consist of a flexible vane which projects into the waterway or a pressure-sensing device. For the flexible vane type, water
movement deflects the vane, and the motion is transmitted to an alarm-actuating switch after a predetermined time delay. The time
delay is accomplished by the use of an instantly recycling retard.
Unless otherwise noted in the listing, the flexible vane type is to be used with pipe having an inside diameter which corresponds to
Schedule 40 pipe for sizes up to and including 6 in. (152 mm) or Schedule 30 pipe for sizes 8 and 10 in. (203 and 254 mm).
Waterflow detectors should not be specified for those systems where the time duration of a pressure fluctuation is greater than the
retard time. Instantly recycling retards will not transmit an electrical alarm until the time duration of the pressure fluctuation or
waterflow past the vane of the flow detector has exceeded the predetermined time setting of 30-60 seconds. Unless otherwise noted
in the listing, these detectors have 175 psi (1205 kPa) rated working pressure.

Indicating Valves, Butterfly or Ball Type
Design features provide a dependable visible indication of the open position even at a distance. If excessive force is applied to the
handle, weakness-joints will break so as to preserve correct orientation between indicator and valve position. Valve and indicator
parts are so designed that they can be assembled only one way, always to give correct indication. All FM Approved indicating valves
turn clockwise to shut. They are small, lightweight, and, because of a resilient seat, are easy to operate. They are not subject to
sticking or dropped gates. They are not recommended for throttling service. Unless otherwise noted in the listing, these valves have
175 psi (1205 kPa) rated working pressure.

Single Check Valves
Single check valves are used in fire protection systems to allow waterflow in one direction only. Typical applications are at
connections between public water supplies and private fire service systems, at the discharge from fire pumps, at gravity tank
connections and at fire service pumper connections.
Valves identified in the listing by a single asterisk (*) have side covers; valves identified by a double asterisk (**) have no removable
covers; others have top covers. Clearance must be provided for side-cover valves to permit clapper removal. Valves without covers
must be removed from the system for clapper replacement or repair. Unless otherwise noted in the listing, these valves have 175 psi

Sprinkler System Alarm Testers
Each separate sprinkler system must be equipped with a separate waterflow alarm. In a high rise building, the system for each floor
must be separately alarmed. Where pressure reducing valves are used, a dual alarm and drain piping arrangement is required. The
alarm testers listed below combine test and drain valves, a waterflow sight glass, and a calibrated flow orifice in a single assembly to
simplify the piping required for such arrangements.

Electrical Signaling
Electrical protective signaling systems are configurations of components used to produce alarm signals indicative of fire, smoke,
sprinkler waterflow or other emergency and to produce supervisory signals indicative of conditions needing attention with respect to
protection equipment or watch service. System configurations are classified according to where and how the signals are received.
The categories are commonly designated as local, municipal, remote station, proprietary and central station. Auxiliary systems are
either local or proprietary systems interconnected with a municipal system.
This category presents the major system component categories and the integrated system configurations. The selection of
components to form a hybrid system should be made only by those skilled in system design. Also, the suitability of any system
application should be judged on the basis of the hazard(s) being protected.

Supervisory Signal Initiating Devices

Supervisory signals indicate non-alarm conditions affecting important parts of a protection system or timed watchman tours.
Normal/abnormal functions are monitored by these switches and switch-actuated transmitters.

Sprinkler System Supervision

Examples of sprinkler supervisory functions are control valve position, tank pressure, tank level, tank temperature, air pressure,
fire pump power and fire pump operation.

Pressure Gauges
Gauges for sprinkler systems and fire pumps are designed for use with air or water. These gauges are usually of the Bourdon tube
type. The moving parts are fabricated of appropriate corrosion-resistant materials.
When installed on the air side of a dry pipe system, a retard type gauge may be used. This gauge is assembled with a tube
appropriate to the unretarded pressure range of the gauge and is provided with a spring to resist the full scale load.
The two common sizes are 4 1⁄2 and 3 1⁄2 in. diameter. These gauges can be calibrated with a hydraulic testing unit by adjusting the
dial pointer to read correctly at known pressures. Accuracy requirements are that the gauge be correct within 2% over the center third
of its scale and within 3% over the remaining two-thirds. Dial marking subdivisions correspond to the maximum accuracy of the
gauge.
For service on fire pumps where the suction may be taken under a lift, compound pressure vacuum gauges are available graduated in
pressure units over both the pressure and vacuum scales, and are designed not to be injured by vacuum.
To minimize possible damage and provide maximum accuracy, gauges should be selected with scales of about twice the maximum
system pressure.
