MINERAL RESOURCES ASSESSMENT

Vol.-1

FS 2010-12

Nagpur-440006 April 2012

Mission-II 1 e-Patrika V.1, April 2012

India has a long glorious past in the field of mining of minerals, both metallic and the non-
metallic. Contribution of Geological Survey of India in this sector since its beginning in 1851 till
date is immense. Large number of minerals and its resources has been unearthed by the
concerted efforts of field officers of this department.
As per the recommendations of HPC, GSI has been re-structured in Mission-Region Hybrid
Matrix mode of functioning with creation of five Missions for execution of various kinds of
geological activities. Mission-II is created for “Natural Resources Assessment” mainly involving
exploration for energy (coal etc., except atomic minerals and mineral oils) and non-energy
(ferrous, non-ferrous, precious, PGE, industry minerals etc.) minerals. Mission-II also comprises
a ‘Shallow Subsurface Geology and Hydrology Division’ meant for Geogenic water quality
assessment, Flood plain aquifer and Deep aquifer studies, assessment of ground water
conditions in mining areas, etc.
Mineral resources are the backbone of any country and these contribute significantly in the
economy of India. India has a large number of economically useful minerals and they
constitute one-quarter of the world’s known mineral resources. GSI is the oldest and largest
government organization engaged in the assessment of Natural Mineral Resources.
It is a pleasure for me to know that Mission-II directorate is bringing out an bZ&if=dk/ e-
News for its activities and achievements. It is a praise-worthy step taken towards e-system of
fast dissemination of information, as per our own charter, with no expenses. I hope the lead
taken by Mission-II will be followed by other Missions too.
I congratulate the entire team of Mission-II for this and wish for its bZ&if=dk/ e-News a
success in its objective.

Mission-II 4 e-Patrika V.1, April 2012

India has a rich past glorious tradition of mining minerals. Large number of old workings/ mines
scattered all over the country are testimony to it. Those were Indians who introduced the
diamonds to the world; were the first to produce industrial zinc metal and had the deepest gold
mines of those periods in the globe. The famous Khetri copper belt is considered to be the
source of copper metal for the Harappan/ Indus Valley civilization.
Geological Survey of India was established during British period in 1851, with Thomas Oldham
as its first head, with the prime aim to locate India’s mineral wealth. In its first fifty years it
delineated major coalfields and copper belt in eastern and iron ore in central India. In second fifty
years fundamental and applied fields were its main activities; alongwith the monumental work on
manganiferous deposits and mica. Since independence the contribution of GSI made a quantum
leap in terms of new mineral finds, both metallic and non-metallic.
India is endowed with rich mineral resources. It produces 87 minerals (4 fuel, 10 metallic, 47
non-metallic, 3 atomic and 23 minor) as per IBM. We are self-sufficient in bauxite, chromite, iron,
manganese ore, thermal coal, lignite, limestone, silica and dolomite, etc. and almost all industrial
minerals except chrysotile asbestos, borax, fluorite, kyanite, potash, rock phosphate and element
sulphur. Presently we have 2999 working mines (excluding those of atomic, oil, gas and miner
minerals) i.e. 574 in coal-lignite, 700 metallic, 1725 non-metallic sector but still we have one of
the lowest per capita consumption of minerals or its produce.
As per High Powered Committee (HPC) recommendations in 2008, GSI is re-organised under
five Missions based on its activities i.e. Mission-I: Baseline Geoscience Data; Mission–II: Natural
Resources Assessment; Mission-III: Geoinformatics; Fundamental and Multi-disciplinary
Geoscience & Special Studies, and Mission–V: Training &Capacity building.
Mission-II has three sub-divisions i.e. M-II A for Mineral Resources except energy, M-II B for
Natural Energy Resources except oil and gas and M-II C for Subsurface Hydrology. It’s
directorate with head alongwith Mission-II A is located at Nagpur. Mission-II B and C are located
at Kolkata and Faridabad respectively. Each GSI Region also has Regional Mission Heads under
Mission-II. Apart from the guidance in mineral resource assessment, Mission-II has other
activities such as liaison/ MoU with other countries through M.O.M., collaboration/ partnerships
with Central, State and other institutions, providing data for policy decision, commercial,
economic and societal need and popularizing the geoscience for students, etc.

Mission-II 5 e-Patrika V.1, April 2012

The goals of Mission-II are guided by Ministry of Mines as per nation’s priorities and set through
5-year plans which commenced in 1951. Initial thrust was on the search for coal, base and noble
metals. It was followed by industrial, fertilizer, strategic minerals and diamond and scarce
minerals. From eighties onward special thrust is imparted to search for Rare Metals and Rare
Earth elements.
During FS 2010-12, a total of 111 mineral investigations were taken-up under Mission-II in
different Regions i.e. 20 in Rajasthan, 12 in M.P., 11 in Odisha, 10 in A.P., 8 each in
Chhattisgarh & Maharashtra, 7 in Karnataka, 6 in W.B., 5 each in Jharkhand & Tamil Nadu, 4 in
Meghalaya, 2 each in Bihar, Gujarat, Haryana, J & K and Kerala; and 1 each in H.P., Manipur,
Sikkim, Uttarakhand & U.P.
Significant highlights of investigations include locating of thick copper zone in Khera and gold
zones in Gundelapara, REE in Dhani samples and SMS grade limestone in Jiraj ka Toba-Asu
Tar in WR; incidence of chrome diopside for KCR in MP-UP border area, phosphorite in Piploda
and Dhanpura-Khatama blocks, and anomalous PGE in Kankauli-Janvali in CR; intersection of
gold zones in Sindauri-Ghanshyampur block, iron ore in Damurda-Champuasahi and Sagasahi
blocks, PGE in Bangur and Baniapank areas in ER; lamproite body in Simsang Diwa, and
carbonatite bodies with REE in Muskut-Sung in NER; mineralized zones in Chakoriya-Charka
area and anomalous gold in stream samples of Lameri-Ratura area in NR; lamproite bodies in
Paluvayi block, intersection of gold zones in Ajjanahalli blocks and Shimoga belt, PGE zones in
Sittampundi complex in SR. Laboratory results in many investigations are yet to come.
These achievements are the net result of the hard core work at the grass root level by field
officers using the existing technical know-how. GSI had conducted a few investigations for deep
seated minerals such as potash, coal under Deccan Trap, etc. But presently most of the
investigations are confined to surface and the shallow sub-surface level search for minerals.
To have a faster pace in the field of mineral search, we have to apply an integrated approach
using geological, geophysical and remote sensing techniques and the new concepts. NGCM is
also on way to help and identify the anomaly zones for little-known but very useful elements/
metals. The Heliborne survey and the application of hyper-spectral data are some of the future
potential keys for mineral search, particularly for the concealed deposits. Mission directorate has
initiated gathering data on these aspects for guidance, initially for those areas which are adjacent
to the known deposits.
With more laboratory input, strict monitoring and field guidance, periodical reviews, pro-active
role of supervisory officers, available SOPs, etc. will be some of the guiding factors, which I am
sure, will result in new finds of mineral deposits in different parts of our country.
With best wishes
(Dr. A.K. Grover)
DIC & Head, Mission-II

Nature is a vast tablet, inscribed with signs, each of which has its own significancy,
and becomes poetry in the mind when read; and geology is simply the key by which
myriads of these signs, hitherto indecipherable, can be unlocked and perused, and
thus a new province added to the poetical domain - Hugh Miller

Energy Resources
Coal and Lignite
Coal Bed Methane
Gas Hydrates
Geothermal Energy
Ocean Thermal and Tidal energy
Ores and Minerals (Non-Coal Minerals/Metals)
Base Metals (copper, lead-zinc)
Precious Metals and Minerals (gold, diamond, PG metals, etc.)
Strategic and Rare Metals and minerals (tin, tungsten, REE, etc.)
Ferrous Minerals (chromite, manganese, etc.)
Fertilizer Minerals (potash, phosphorite, etc.)
Industrial Minerals (limestone, dolomite, etc.)
Emphasis on prognostication of low volume high-value minerals (gold, diamond,
and platinum group of minerals) and ores and minerals of high demand (base
metal, iron ore, coal, lignite etc.) have been prioritized keeping in view the
thrust accorded by the Ministry of Mines, Government of India.
With the near exhaustion of surface proximal resources it has become
imperative to have multi-disciplinary approach for locating concealed mineral
deposits. This approach comprises large-scale and detailed mapping aided by
analysis of remotely sensed and aero-geophysical data, ground geophysical
survey, geochemical prospecting and sub-surface exploration through pitting,
trenching and drilling.
Collection of baseline geo-environmental data has been made mandatory for
exploration of minerals, which would be of help in carrying out EIA and EMP
studies during exploitation stage, thus ensuring a balance between development
and environmental protection.
The resource evaluation will be continued in P-I, P-II, E-I and E-II stages and
will be monitored in conformity with the exploration input for G-4, G-3, G-2
(partly) stages of UNFC system respectively. This ensures continuous flow of
projects from a preliminary stage to successive stages of detailed exploration
while providing a built in scope for review and decision making after each stage
of work through successor programmes.
Systematic updating of the database in the mineral resource sector to provide
reliable and relevant information on mineral and other natural resources to the
public and private sector entrepreneurs to sustain investment in mineral sector.
