REFLECTION
Working in an Aged Care Facility is really a huge adjustment from me being a Personal Care
Worker. I am student and needs to be supervise and I needs to learn a lot on the floor.
Working with this vulnerable people due to their old age makes it more become more
challenging, aside from that the responsibility that we carry on our hands every time we
attend their needs.
Today I on a Unit that most of the older people needs assistance either single or double. I
am working with my one of the permanent staff in Unit B2 in the afternoon shifts. So the
moment I commence my duty we listened to the hand over and taking some notes what are
the updates on every consumer on the unit and pick up the updated care plan for the day.
When we are already on the floor she briefly told me about the consumers about their
preference about the hygiene of the consumers, she told me to assist those consumer who
are needs just few assistance. She let me go to David, Frank and Richard. First I went to
David’s room and knock before and wait for the response, enter ask him if there are thing I
need to do for him, and he said “ I just want to go to the toilet”. David can stand on is own
and can do most of his ADL’s but most of the time you have to supervise him to do it. He is
still there sitting while watching and I told him to stand up and go to the toilet I was
standing beside him to ensure his safety and ensure he will not fall he do not need any
assistive device as well. And I let him sit and do his bowel and urine continence. I just let him
know that I am just outside the door and just buzz if he is done.
The Second consumer I assisted is Richard is really more opposite of David and require more
assistance. The permanent staff told me that he needs to be shower, because that was his
preference that he wans to get shower before going to bed. Before we enters Richards
room we knock on the door and wait for him to let us in. The first thing I ask him “do you
want to have shower this afternoon?” and he nod. So while I am on his cupboard I ask him
what he wants to where on his sleep I let him choose and decide. So when everything are
prepared the my colleague helps me to put Richard on the shower area. In the shower I let
him feel first if the water is on the right temperature for him. I let him wash his face, fronts
and bottoms and I just do his back and the lowers legs that he cant reach. And while he was
on the shower chair I ensure his safety and my priority. And I let him dress his self on his
tops I just assist him a bit to his panjamas and socks. I let him do everything that he can do
to and able to do. It is might a little bit slow but here I know I can provide a quality care for
the consumer.
With the experience I encountered today I realize that even I can see it before that I looks
easy but its not. The moment I enter the door of a consumer I needs to get his trust and
cooperation and it is not easy. I needs to establish more in gaining rapport with the
consumer. And I need to develop my communication skill and work on it more. Observe
more and be familiarize with the routine on the floor. Idont need to memorize their
preference on foods and drinks but always ensure to ask them what they want and need. In
this the relationship between me as carer with the consumer will be more productive and
efficient.
