Introduction
ProtaStructure checks the beam-column joint shear limits according to NBCI 2016 -Annex F. In this
document, calculation details about beam-column joint shear are explained.

Joint Shear Check Tolerance Settings

The opposite beams may not be on the same line or level at beam-column joints. In this case, the user
should determine the tolerances for both vertical and plan. Beams not within tolerance limits will be
considered as separate joints.

Building Model Details

In the current document, joint shear check calculations for a column of a 4-story residential building. 3D
and typical story plan views are shown below.

This document will use Column S12 at the second storey for calculation details. There are two
beams(K) in the X direction connected to column S12 and one in the Y direction. There is a 500 mm
distance between near sides of beams in the X direction. Since Plan Continuity Tolerance is set as 600
mm, beams in the X direction(K213-K217) will be considered continuous.

Details of the Calculation

Calculation of Shear Strength of Concrete in a Joint

According to NBCI F-8.1.1, beams can be specified in their continuity conditions. In addition, joints can
be referred to as confined or not, according to the properties of the connected beams. Nominal shear
strength calculations are different for particular conditions.

• A joint that is confined by beams from 4 sides:

𝝉𝒋𝒄 = 𝟏. 𝟓√𝒇𝒄𝒌

• A joint that is confined by three:

𝝉𝒋𝒄 = 𝟏. 𝟐√𝒇𝒄𝒌

• Other Joints

𝝉𝒋𝒄 = 𝟏. 𝟎√𝒇𝒄𝒌

• 𝝉𝒋𝒄 (Nominal Shear Strength ) of the joint shall be calculated per NBCI 2016 -Annex F-8.
Page - 9

Calculation of Design Shear Stress Demand on a Joint

• 𝝉𝒋𝒅 is the design shear stress demand acting horizontally along each of the two principal plan
directions of the joint shall be estimated from earthquake shaking considered along each of
these directions.
𝑽𝑗𝑑𝑋
𝝉𝑗𝑑𝑋 =
𝒃𝑗 ∗ 𝒘𝑗
𝑽𝑗𝑑𝑌
𝝉𝑗𝑑𝑌 =
𝒃𝑗 ∗ 𝒘𝑗

According to NBCI 2016 F-8.1.2, it shall be ensured that the joint shear capacity of joint concrete
estimated using F-8.1.1 exceeds both τjdX and τjdY.
VjdX, VjdY: Design shear force demands acting horizontally on the joint in principal plan directions X and
Y.

𝑽𝑗𝑑 = 1.25𝑓𝑦𝑘 (𝐴𝑠1 + 𝐴𝑠2 ) − 𝑉𝑐

Page - 10

Effective Joint Width Calculation

According to NBCI 2016 Figure 48, effective joint width should be calculated as follows:

If bc>bb

𝑏𝑗 = 𝑚𝑖𝑛{𝑏𝑏 + ℎ𝑐 ; (𝑏𝑏 + 2 ∗ 𝑥)}

If bb>bc

𝑏𝑗 = 𝑏𝑐

Verification of Joint Shear Check Results

In this part of the document, Joint Shear Checks are performed for the S12 column.

X-Direction Checks
K213 and K217 beams are connected to the column in the X direction.

Calculation of Effective Joint Width, bj:

Since bc(100 cm) > bw1 , bw2 (25cm), effective joint width will be calculated with NBCI 2016 F-8.1.1.

hc = 30 cm
Page - 11

Since the beam is at the corner of the column, x = 0 cm.

𝑏𝑗 = 𝑚𝑖𝑛{25 + 30 ; (25 + 2 ∗ 0)}

𝑏𝑗 = 25 𝑐𝑚

Calculation of Shear Force:

𝑏𝑗 = 250 𝑚𝑚

𝑤𝑗 = 300 𝑚𝑚

𝐴𝑠1 = 946 𝑚𝑚2

𝐴𝑠2 = 628 𝑚𝑚2

𝑉𝑐 = 5626 𝑁

𝑽𝑗𝑑𝑋 = 1.25 ∗ 420(946 + 628) − 56256

755996 𝑁
𝝉𝑗𝑑𝑋 =
250 ∗ 300 𝑚𝑚2

𝑉𝑢 = 10.08 𝑚𝑃𝑎

Calculation of Shear Force Limit:

Since two beams are connected in the X-Direction, the below formulation will be used for shear force
limit calculation.

1.0 ∗ √𝑓𝑐𝑘

𝑓𝑐𝑘 = 25 𝑀𝑝𝑎

𝝉𝑗𝑐 = 5 𝑀𝑝𝑎

𝝉𝑗𝑐 = 5000 𝑘𝑁⁄ 2

𝑚
Page - 12

Y-Direction Checks
Only the beam K233 is connected to the column in the X direction.

Calculation of Effective Joint Width, bj:

Since bc(30 cm) > bw1 (20cm), effective joint width will be calculated with NBCI 2016 F-8.1.1.

hc = 100 cm

Since the beam is at the center of the column, x = 2.5 cm.

𝑏𝑗 = 𝑚𝑖𝑛{25 + 100; (25 + 2 ∗ 2.5)}

𝑏𝑗 = 30 𝑐𝑚

Calculation of Shear Force:

𝑏𝑗 = 300 𝑚𝑚

𝑤𝑗 = 1000 𝑚𝑚

𝐴𝑠1 = 946 𝑚𝑚2

𝐴𝑠2 = 628 𝑚𝑚2

𝑉𝑐 = 5626 𝑁

𝑽𝑗𝑑𝑋 = 1.25 ∗ 420(946) − 39470

457180 𝑁
𝝉𝑗𝑑𝑋 =
300 ∗ 1000 𝑚𝑚2

𝑉𝑢 = 1.49 𝑚𝑃𝑎

Calculation of Shear Force Limit:

Since only one beam is connected in the Y-Direction, the below formulation will be used for shear stress
limit calculation.

1.0 ∗ √𝑓𝑐𝑘

𝑓𝑐𝑘 = 25 𝑀𝑝𝑎

𝝉𝑗𝑐 = 5 𝑀𝑝𝑎

𝝉𝑗𝑐 = 5000 𝑘𝑁⁄ 2
