Are you looking for some club suitable for you in the senior high school? Here are some
introductions of popular clubs.
Speech Club
Do you enjoy talking? Do you think you can be a future lawyer? Try out for the school's
speech team. Not only will you meet people and make new friends, you'll also get to practice
public speaking, a valuable, important tool that you will use at every stage of your life. By
researching, talking about, and debating hot-button political, social, cultural, and environment
topics, you will also become more aware and up-to-date on current events.
Band Club
Are you in a band in junior high? If so, you probably remember always hanging around with
your musical buddies( 同 伴 ). If you haven't joined one of these three high school clubs yet,
you
should! The beauty of these three classes is that they're not merely fine arts electives( 选修课),
they're also clubs! Most high school bands give shows, and even go on trips to Disneyland. Not
sure? Did I mention that studies show that students with music education tend to receive higher
grades? You read it right.
Red Cross Club
If you are interested in the medical field or planning to take a combined M.D . program,
perhaps you should consider joining your school's American Red Cross Club. As part of the high
school club
working with the local Red Cross chapter, you can become a lifeguard, learn how to perform
CPR,
or become a trained instructor who teaches others.
Language Clubs
Are you a native Spanish, French, or German speaker ? Or maybe you just really like the
foreign language class! Either way, you should consider joining your school's language clubs
and
learn a new language during your pastime. Spanish, French and German clubs put on several charity
and cultural events throughout the academic( 学术)year. You could be helping others in need, and
making new friends all at the same time!
21. What would be the best choice if you dream of becoming a lawyer?

2 / 10
A. Speech Club. B. Band Club.
C. Red Cross Club. D. Language Clubs.
22. What is the benefit of joining Band Club?

D. It helps students to learn how to use medical facilities.
23. What do Red Cross Club and Language Clubs have in common?
A. They both can make new friends.
B. They allow you to support people in need.
C. They make you a man of many gifts and languages.
D. They can help you to be a person with first aid knowledge.
B
Ever since I graduated from high school I've worked in the factories surrounding my hometown
every summer. However, making the transformation between school and full-time blue-collar work
during the break never gets any easier. For a student like me who considers any class before noon to
be unacceptable, getting to a factory by 6 o'clock each morning is suffering. My friends never
seem
to understand why I'm so glad to be back at school or that my summer vacation has been
anything
but a vacation.
There are few people as self-confident as a college student who has never been out in the real
world. People of my age always seem to overestimate the value of their time and knowledge. In fact,
all the classes did not prepare me for my battles with the machine I ran in the plant, which would
jam whenever I absent-mindedly put in a part(部件) backward or upside down.
The most stressful thing about blue-collar life is knowing your job could disappear over night.
Issues like being laid off( 下 岗 ) and overseas relocation had always seemed distant to me until
my
co-workers told me that the unit I was working in would shut down within six months and move to
Mexico, where people would work for 60 cents an hour.
After working 12-hour shifts (轮班) in a factory, the other choices have become only too
clear.
" This job pays well, but it's hell on the body, " said one co-worker. " Study hard and keep reading. "
she added. When I'm back at the university, skipping classes and turning in lazy re-writes seems
too irresponsible after seeing what I would be doing without school. All the advice and public-
service announcements about the value of an education that used to sound stale (陈腐的) now ring
true.
My experiences in the factories have inspired me to make the most of my college years before I
enter the real world for good.
24. What does the author think of his summer holiday?
A. It brought him nothing but suffering.
B. It was no holiday for him at all.
C. It was a relief from his tough work at school.
D. It offered him a chance to make more friends.
25. What can we infer about most college students?
A. They do better in the real world.
B. They think too highly of themselves.
C. They are expert at handling machines.
D. They are confident when they work.
26. What is the biggest pressure for blue-collar workers?
A. A low income. B. A changeable location.
C. The lack of security. D. Less break.
27. What is the author's attitude toward his working experiences?

3 / 10
A. Approving B. Doubtful C. Unclear D. Appreciative
C
We've all been there: in a lift, in line at the bank or on an airplane, surrounded by people who
are, like us, deeply focused on their smartphones or, worse, struggling with the uncomfortable
silence.
What's the problem? It's possible that we all don't have enough conversational ability. It's more
likely that none of us start a conversation because it's embarrassing and challenging, or we think it's
annoying and unnecessary. But the next time you find yourself among strangers, consider that small
talk is worth the trouble. Experts say it's a valuable social practice that leads to big benefits.
It is easy to consider small talk as unimportant, but we can't forget that deep
relationships
wouldn't even exist if there weren't casual conversations. Small talk is the grease ( 润 滑 剂 ) for
social communication, says Bernardo Carducci, director of the Shyness Research Institute at
Indiana University Southeast. “Almost every great love story and each big business deal begins
with small talk,” he explains. “The secret to successful small talk is learning how to connect with
others, not just communicate with them.”
In a 2014 study, Elizabeth Dunn, professor of psychology at UBC, invited people to a coffee
shop. One group was asked to interact ( 互 动 ) with its waiter; the other, to speak only when
necessary. The results showed that those who chatted with their server reported obviously higher
positive feelings and a better coffee shop experience. “It's not that talking to the waiter is better than
talking to your husband,” says Dunn. “But interactions with peripheral ( 边缘的) members of our
social network is important for our happiness and health.”
Dunn believes that people who reach out to strangers feel a greater sense of belonging, a link
with others. Carducci believes developing such a sense of belonging starts with small talk. “Small
talk is the basis of good manners,” he says.
28. What does the underline word “casual” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Addictive B. Impressive C. Personal D. Informal
29. What is important for successful small talk according to Carducci?
A. Showing good manners.
B. Making business deals
C. Focusing on a topic
D. Keeping in contact with other people.
30. What does the coffee-shop study suggest about small talk?
A. It raises people's confidence.
B. It makes people feel good.
C. It improves family relationships.
D. It matters as much as a formal talk.
31. What is the best title for the text?
A. Conversation Counts B. Ways of Making Small Talk
C. Importance of Small Talk D. Uncomfortable Silence
D
There's a new AI bot: ChatGPT, and you'd better pay attention, even if you aren’t into artificial
intelligence. The tool is an AI chatbot system that OpenAI released in November 2022 to show off
and test what a very large, powerful AI system can achieve.
ChatGPT remembers the thread ( 主线; 思路)of your dialogue, using previous questions and
answers to inform its next responses. It obtains its answers from huge volumes of information on
the Internet. ChatGPT is built on top of the OpenAIGPT-3 family of large language models using
both supervised and reinforcement learning (监督和强化学习).
You can ask ChatGPT anything, like explaining physics, asking for birthday party ideas and
getting programming help. Perhaps it's not smart enough to replace all humans yet, but it can be
creative, and its answers can sound downright authoritative (权威的). A few days after its launch,

4 / 10
more than 1 million people were trying out ChatGPT. UBS analyst Lloyd Walmsley estimated in
February 2023 that ChatGPT reached 100 million monthly users in January, achieving in 2 months
what took TikTok about 9 months and Instagram two and a half years.
ChatGPT is free to use at the moment because it is still in its research stage. But when too
many people visit the site, it overloads and can’t process your request. It just means you should try
it at a later time when fewer people are trying to access( 访问) it. If you want to skip the wait and
have reliable access, there is an option for you. As of Feb.1, 2023, OpenAI has a ChatGPT pro plan,
ChatGPT Plus, which allows users to have general access even during peak times. This service does
come at a cost of $20/month.
However, ChatGPT cannot replace Google. ChatGPT is an artificial intelligence bot that
provides solutions to your questions, but Google is a search engine in which you can search for as
much information as possible. ChatGPT has limited knowledge due to its programming but Google
has unlimited knowledge which is updated every day.
32. What does paragraph 2 mainly tell us about ChatGPT?
A. Its language model. B. Its design inspiration.
C. Its working theory. D. Its development process.
33. Why are the figures listed in paragraph 3?
A. To stress the high cost of inventing ChatGPT.
B. To present the creativity of artificial intelligence.
C. To prove the necessity of developing ChatGPT.
D. To show the popularity of ChatGPT.
34. What is ChatGPT Plus intended to do?
A. To charge users for extra functions.
B. To allow net surfers to skip advertisements.
C. To offer consumers easier access during peak hours.
D. To help researchers find the failure of the system.
35. What is the limitation of ChatGPT compared with Google?
A. It operates based on limited data.
B. It updates information at a fixed time.
C. It takes more time to search for solutions.
D. It serves a certain number of customers at a time.
第二节(共 5 小题;每小题 2.5 分,满分 12.5 分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
It's a picture we often see. 36 He is trying not to fall asleep as his teacher drills(训练)
the class in the body structure of a man: the heart is here; the lungs are here… The teacher then
gives the class a worksheet and asks them to answer questions like which body parts go where. At
the end of the period, the only way to measure whether the students have learned anything is based
on this worksheet and the unit test.
37 Primary school students walk into a classroom and see a basic skeleton(骨架) with
models of the heart, lungs, and the stomach lying on a table in the center of the room. Students
gather around in a circle, see the model organs(器官), laugh, and begin to guess the name of each
body part and its function. Through trial and error, they figure out where each model organ fits
in
the skeleton.
The differences between these two types of classes are obvious. One has students actively
involved. The other relies on direct instruction, rote learning( 死 记 硬 背 ), and
remembering
information for the test. One is memorable for students. 38 .Which lesson will leave a
lasting impression?
39 Why? Lessons should be based on students' psychological needs and help them
achieve learning outcomes. If an educator takes a child's development into consideration, he or she
can prepare lessons that will not only engage the student but also leave a lasting impression.
Many famous educators like John Dewey have written about student-centered learning and they
think highly of it. But many teachers are still adopting a wait-and-see approach to it. 40

5 / 10
A. Now imagine another picture.
B. Classes should be made effective and meaningful.
C. The other relies on students memorizing information.
D. A primary school student sits at his desk and looks bored.
E. Classes that rely on student-centered learning are more effective.
F. Whatever the reasons are, educators are making efforts to make a change.
G. Students thus actively participate instead of passively receiving knowledge

第二节 (满分 25 分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I love parties. I love planning for them, making the invitations, planning the games and
decorating my own cake. The only thing that I don't like is deciding on the guest list. When I was in
grade school my mom would tell me the largest number of friends that I could invite and it was
always a number too small for my list.
I also liked all different kinds of people. I never quite fit into one of the many little groups at
my school, so I just kind of floated around, making friends from various backgrounds. There was an
“in” crowd made up of the cool kids who had the power to rule the school--if a cool kid wore two
different colored socks to school one day, everyone thought it was great. But if an uncool kid did
the same thing, the other kids would turn away in disgust( 厌 恶 ). It made getting dressed in the
morning a very painful thing.
Shannon was one of my friends who seemed to unknowingly break the rules of “uncoolness”
all the time. I don't know why she was targeted(针对), but people found it acceptable to make fun of
her. Shannon was a nice girl and wore pretty clothes, but was somewhat overweight and didn't talk
much. She was picked on(刁难) a lot. Whenever there was a strange noise or smell in the classroom

7 / 10
the kids would giggle (咯咯笑) and point at her. Shannon never said anything, but it made me feel
sick inside. Shannon was innocent(无辜), I thought.
One year, to celebrate my birthday, my mom told me I could have a party at our house.
I
struggled for days deciding on which girls to invite. Once I had chosen all the names, I made the
invitations and handed them out to my friends at school.
“Why did you invite her?” asked one of my cool friends when it was discovered that I had
invited Shannon. She pressured me to tell her not to come. There were other people I could add in
her place who would be more acceptable.
注意:1.续写词数应为 150 左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Paragraph 1:
Unsure what to do, I was put in a difficult situation.

___________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 2:
Weeks later, Shannon suddenly called to thank me for inviting her to the party.

Dear Peter,
I'm glad to receive your letter asking for my advice on how to learn Chinese well. Now, I am
writing to give you a hand.
Here are several useful and practical suggestions for you. To begin with, why not attend a
Chinese course, which will provide you with the most widely used words and expressions. In
addition, it would be wise of you to read some Chinese books and magazines as well as TV
programs, enabling you to know more about Chinese culture. Last but not least, it is also beneficial
for you to make some Chinese friends. Only by chatting with your Chinese friends can you have
enough chances to practice your Chinese.
Hopefully, these suggestions would be of help to you and I hold the firm belief that you can
master this beautiful language before long. Looking forward to your good news.
Best wishes. Yours, Li Hua

Paragraph 1:Unsure what to do, I was put in a difficult situation. I liked Shannon, yet I was
afraid that I would become the target of the children’s ridicule if I insisted on inviting Shannon to
my party. I knew the right thing to do, but I struggled with the fear of having to live with my
decision. Finally, my consciousness took over. I decided not to say anything to Shannon and let the
invitations stay as written, despite the fact that I was worried about what would happen. Luckily,
the party worked out well, with all of us having fun together.
Paragraph 2:Weeks later, Shannon suddenly called to thank me for inviting her to the party.
She said my invitation brightened her days. Shannon cherished the memory of that birthday party. It
was important to her that I had welcomed her into the fun, and it was a day when she felt accepted

and part of a group. She talked about the games we played and the cake we ate, remembering all the
details. For me, it was just a simple party. But for Shannon, it was a signal of acceptance.

Text 1
W: Dick, if you can finish your homework before 6:00, I will take you to the cinema.
M: I’m sure I can. But I’d like to go to the park to play football.
W: OK. But you must return home before 8:00.
Text 2
W: Oh, dear. I can’t find my necklace now. I remember I put it in the sitting room.
M: It is in the bedroom. You left it here when our daughter called you to the kitchen.
Text 3
M: Henry had never expected he would be awarded a holiday abroad. That’s awesome.
W: Work hard and you will have the luck. Our boss has always been friendly and generous to hard-
working workers.
Text 4
M: Hey, Emily. We’re going to Susie Q’s Restaurant for lunch. Do you want to come along?
W: Sorry, I can’t. I have to type the document for Scott. He’s having a dentist appointment.
Text 5
W: Did you watch that comedy special on TV last night? I don’t think I ever laughed so hard.
M: Don’t even talk to me about it. The only night I really wanted to watch something and we had a
power failure in my building.
Text 6
W: Hi, Mike. Do you have any plans for the weekend? I have an extra ticket for the Dawson Trio’s
live performance at Capital Stadium. Would you like to join me?
M: I don’t know if I can. My parents are coming to town this weekend, so I need to spend time with
them.
W: Well, if they like jazz, they might enjoy the show as well. Why don’t you go to the band’s
website and see if there are more tickets available? Their shows often sell out, but you might be
lucky.
M: All right, I’ll do that this evening. Thanks for the information.
Text 7
M: Can I help you?
W: Yes. I’d like to move to another room, if possible. M: Of course. Is there anything wrong with
your room, madam?
W: Yes. It faces the street, so it’s pretty noisy.
M: I see. Let me check. Yes, I can move you to a room on the opposite side. That should be much
quieter. But there’s no sunshine getting in, so it’s a little dark.
W: OK. And is it a non-smoking room?
M: I’m sorry, but it’s not. All of them are occupied at the moment.
W: That’s too bad. I hate the smell of smoke. But at least it will be quieter.
Text 8
M: Good afternoon. Can I help you with anything?
W: Yeah. Can I look at this ring?
M: Sure. Let me get it out for you. What is your size?
W: I believe I’m a six. But I’m not choosing for myself. My mom’s birthday is coming, and one of
my friends suggested I send her some jewelry. She is a seven.
M: I see. Here you go.
W: Do you have any necklace that would go well with this?
M: Actually, we have many to choose from. They are over there.
W: This necklace is a little short. Do you have one that is longer?
M: Yes. Why don’t you try this one on?
W: This one is much better. Can I try on the ring with this necklace?
M: Sure. Here you go. W: If you don’t mind me asking, how much do they cost?

M: The ring is $1,500. But the necklace ranges from $600 to $3,000, which mainly depends on its
quality. Of course its size and length also count.

M: Next week, there will be an annual folk festival. A lot of programs will be showed then. Will
you come?
W: Er, what programs are there this year?
M: There will be a free art exhibition on Monday. It will be held in the Art School, and I’ve heard
that most of the works on the show are painted by the students in our town.
W: Really? I will go and see. Well, what else is on the program?
M: There are several traditional programs every year, such as ballet performance. But it is a little
different from that of last year. This year there will be two performances at the theater, the first on
Tuesday at 6:00 pm and the second on Thursday at the same time. This program is so popular that
the audience need to book the tickets in advance.
W: Oh, I saw it last year. There were so many people at the theater that I could hardly see the
dancer. Are there any other particular new programs?
M: Er, yes, there will be a mask party. It will be held on Friday evening. Everyone is welcome, but
every participant should be dressed in fancy dress.
W: That’s funny. Where will it be held?
M: It was planned to be held in the piazza (广场), but now it has been changed to the concert hall.
W: Great. I will go. Er, are there any living theaters?
M: Yes, The Little Prince will be held on Wednesday. It is also at the theater. You can go to see it
from 2:00 pm to 4:30 pm or 6:30 pm to 9:00 pm.
W: How much will the ticket cost?
M: Well, the ticket costs $10 for adults, $8 for students and seniors, and $15 for a family.
W: Excellent. I will go with my family.

M: Hello, this is Principal Johnson with the morning announcements. Our usual reader Timmy is
out sick today, so I’m reading in his place. I hope you’ve all had a great start to the week! This
Monday has started out warm and sunny, so let’s hope it stays that way. I know we’ve had some
strange weather in the last few weeks. We have just one month of school left before summer break,
so make sure you’ve turned in all of your homework. The last day to turn in an assignment is
Friday, May 20th. The last boys’ baseball game will be held at 6:00 pm this Wednesday. Please
show up to support the team! If you’ve had problems using the computers in the library, they should
be fixed by Thursday. We’re sorry for any trouble this may have caused. This evening, the girls’
softball team will be playing their last game, and over the weekend, the basketball team is playing
McKinney School on Saturday afternoon. That’s it for the morning announcements. I hope
everyone has a great Monday!
