TUTORIAL-10

Q1- A surge of 15 kV magnitude travels along a cable toward its junction with an overhead
line. The inductance and capacitance of the cable and overhead line are respectively 0.3 mH,
0.4 µF, and 1.5 mH, 0.012 µF per km. Find the voltage rise at the junction due to the surge.

Q2- A surge of 100 kV traveling in a line of natural impedance 600 ohms arrives at a junction
with two lines of impedances 800 ohms and 200 ohms, respectively. Find the surge voltages
and currents transmitted into each branch line.

Q3- The ends of two long transmission lines, A and C, are connected by cable B. The surge
impedance of A, B, and C are 500, 50, and 600, respectively. A rectangular voltage wave of
30 kV magnitude and of infinite length is initiated in A and travels to C. Determine the first
and second voltage impressed on C.

Q4- A transmission line with a surge impedance of 225 Ω has a terminal load consisting of
the parallel combination of 0.055 µF capacitor and 4.5 kΩ resistance. A surge voltage in the
form of a unit step function of 220kV magnitude travels along the line. Find the load voltage
(in kV) of 7.5 µs after the arrival of the wavefront of the surge. [The capacitor is initially
uncharged]

Q5- A 115 kV rectangular surge wave travels along the line terminated by an inductance of
12.5 mH. Determine the magnitude of the voltage across the inductance after 15 µs if the
surge impedance of the line is 225 Ω. Also, determine the magnitude of the reflected voltage
wave after 12.5 µs.

Q6- A surge of 20kV magnitude travels along a lossless cable toward its junction with two
identical lossless overhead transmission lines. The inductance and the capacitance of the
cable are 0.4 mH and 0.5 μF per km. What will be the magnitude of the voltage at the junction
due to surge?

Q7- A 400 kV, 2 μsec rectangular surge on a transmission line has a surge impedance of 350
ohm. It approaches a generating station with capacitance of 3000 pF. Find the transmitted
voltage.

Q8-An overhead line with a surge impedance of 400 ohms is connected in series with a cable
with a surge impedance of 40 ohms. The cable is 5km in length and is open at its far end. A
surge of peak value 100kV travels along the overhead line towards the junction of the line
and the cable. Find the voltage distribution at the instants 1 and 50 microseconds after the
surge reaches the junction. The velocities of the propagation in the overhead line and the
cable are 3X105 km/s and 1.4 x10 5 km/s, respectively.
