Lab: Hearing Threshold Measurement

Objectives:
1. To be familiar with audiometer controls and their functions.
2. To be able to conduct hearing measurement tests.
3. To understand the effect of frequency on hearing threshold.
4. To be able to make conclusions on the hearing level.

Equipment:
1. Ambco Audiometer 650A (Quantity = 3)

Experiment:
1. Follow the instructions in the PowerPoint slides for correct operation of the audiometer.
2. Select a member in your group to measure his or her hearing threshold.
3. Input your data in Table 1 and share it with the other groups.

Lab Assignment:
1) Identify the major parts of the ear and their corresponding functions. Show an ear diagram.
2) Construct one table of the average hearing thresholds of the class at each frequency and for
each ear.
3) Construct one graph that shows the relation between frequency and the average hearing
threshold for each ear. What is the relationship between frequency and hearing threshold?
Is there a difference between the hearing threshold of the left and right ears? Elaborate on
your answers.
4) What conclusions can you make on the hearing threshold (or the hearing loss) of:
a. Your group member?
b. The class?
5) Discuss at least two the industrial applications of the audiometer.
