Let’s THINK about this…

Presentation title 20XX 2

•It is the condition of the
Weather atmosphere at a specific place and
time.

 The element of weather are

temperature, atmospheric pressure,
wind speed, humidity and
precipitation
Climate •It is the general pattern of the
weather that occurs for a region
over a number of years.
Climate determines what type of houses
people build in a particular region, the
plants and animals that inhabit in a
location, and even the livelihood of the
people and community

LATITUDE
It describes the
distance of a land
area from the
equator

It is marked east-
west parallel to
the equator 20XX 8
CLIMATE ZONES 1. Tropical

Earth is divided into 3 climate 2. Temperate
zones or areas with distinct Climate Zone
climate based on the average 3. Polar Climate

OBJECTIVE:

Explain how
latitude affects
climate

20XX 11
20XX 12
GUIDE QUESTIONS

1.How much is the tilt of Earth’s axis?

2.Which part of the earth receives most of the
sun’s rays?
3.Why does the amount of heat received by
places far from the equator become less?

20XX 13
GUIDE QUESTIONS

4. Why are the coldest places on Earth found

near the poles?
5. Why are the places with high temperature
found at the equator?
6.How does latitude affect climate?

TROPICAL CLIMATE ZONE
This zone is also
known as the
low-latitude
zone because it
is found near the
equator
TROPICAL
CLIMATE ZONE

Characterized
by both high
temperatures
and humidity
levels.
TROPICAL
CLIMATE ZONE
Its average
annual
temperature is
18°C. During the
day, temperatures
in this region can
exceed 35 °C.
TEMPERATE CLIMATE ZONE
This zone is
also known as
the middle-
latitude or
mid-latitude
zone
TEMPERATE
CLIMATE ZONE
Countries
within this
zone have
four seasons:
winter, spring,
and autumn
or fall.
TEMPERATE
CLIMATE ZONE
Places in the
temperate zone
that are further
from the equator
may experience
snow during
winter
TEMPERATE
CLIMATE ZONE
Meanwhile,
places near the
equator may
experience
rainfall
throughout the
year.
POLAR
CLIMATE ZONE

This zone is
also known as
the high-
latitude zone
POLAR
CLIMATE ZONE
Most places in
the polar zone
are covered
with glaciers
or layers of
ice.
POLAR
CLIMATE ZONE
The average
annual
temperature is
below the
freezing point
or 0 °C
How does LATITUDE affect CLIMATE?

The closer the place is to the equator, the

warmer the climate is;
The farther the place is from the equator
the colder the climate is.
Different Factors that Affect Climate

Latitude
Altitude
Distance from bodies of water
Ocean current
Topography
ALTITUDE
How does ALTITUDE affect CLIMATE?

The higher the altitude is,

the colder the climate
Why is it the temperature decreases
as the altitude increases?

•For every 1000 m, there is a drop of 6.5 C.

•At higher elevations, there is less air.
•The air molecules are farther apart, thus
making the air less dense.
Lighter air cannot
absorb much
heat, making air
temperature
lower.

Thus, the decrease

in air temperature
is due to the
decrease in air
pressure.

Distance from bodies of water
Ocean current
Topography
DISTANCE
FROM
BODIES OF
WATER
Remember this!

Soil absorbs heat faster than water.

At the same time, soil releases heat
faster compared to water.
Even as both soil and
water absorb the same
amount of heat, the
temperature of water
rises more slowly than
that of soil.
How does the distance from bodies of water
affect the climate?

Places that are near the oceans have

moderate climate as the body of water
regulates the temperature
Seas and oceans are
the large bodies of
water on Earth, serve
as the moderator of
climate
Different Factors that Affect Climate

Latitude
Altitude
Distance from bodies of water
Ocean current
Topography
OCEAN
CURRENT
Ocean currents are the continuous and
directional movement of ocean created by
the wind friction, water density, earth’s
rotation, solar energy, and gravity variation in
different parts of the ocean.
The ocean current systems flow clockwise in
the northern hemisphere
and
counterclockwise in the southern
hemisphere in circular patterns.
The ocean currents
transport warm water
and precipitation from
the equator to the poles
and cold water from the
poles back to the
equator.

20XX 47
These regulate the
global climate, and
uneven distribution of
heat reaching earth’s
surface

20XX 48
Therefore, ocean currents that bring along
cold water inland make the climate cold.
On the other hand, ocean currents that take
long warm water to coastal areas make the
climate warm.

TOPOGRAPHY
TOPOGRAPHY

It is the
arrangement of
the natural and
artificial
physical
features of an
area.
TOPOGRAPHY

•One of topographic features of an area is

mountain.
• Mountainous areas affect the amount of
precipitation in a certain region.
The
mountainous
areas tend to
have extreme
weather because
it acts as a
barrier to air
movements and
moisture.
Presentation title 20XX 54
WINDWARD- It is the area in which the wind blows.
Here the wind is blocked by the mountain,
forcing it move upward.
As it moves up, the water vapor condenses and forms
clouds. This will result in precipitation on the
windward side.
LEEWARD- the opposite region of windward.
The air moves down towards the opposite region
called leeward side.
The cold air mass starts to absorb heat and
become warm and dry
As a result, the area near the leeward side
becomes dry and has less precipitation
The dry region on the leeward side is called
RAIN SHADOW.
Vegetation in this region includes desert plants
and grassland
