Geometric Mean
When the means of a proportion are
the same number, that number is
called the geometric mean of the
extremes. The geometric mean
between two numbers is the positive
square root of their product

Example
Find the geometric mean between 8 and 10.
Do these problems to find out.

Find the geometric mean of each pair of numbers.

Altitude (of a triangle)

A segment from a vertex to the line

containing the opposite side and
perpendicular to the line containing that side.
Right Triangle Similarity Theorem

If the altitude is drawn C

to the hypotenuse of a
right triangle, then the
two triangles formed
are similar to the A
D
B

original triangle and to

each other.

Theorem
Geometric Mean (Altitude) Theorem
C

The altitude drawn to h

the hypotenuse of a A B
right triangle separates x D y
the hypotenuse into two
segments. The length of
this altitude is the
geometric mean
between the lengths of
these two segments.
Geometric Mean (Leg) Theorem C

The altitude drawn to b a

the hypotenuse of a
right triangle separates A B
the hypotenuse into two x D y
c
segments. The length of
a leg of this triangle is
the geometric mean
between the length of
the hypotenuse and the
segment of the
hypotenuse adjacent to
that leg.
