Context: energy transition from fossil to renewable
• COP21: Worldwide engagement to stop global warming
• Germany is 20 years away from 100 percent renewable power

• In practice, however, a number of related problems would

need to be solved, especially power storage and grid lines.

Global Warming
We need these:

Focus point: why we need to store energy?
• Sun is shining only during daytime
• Wind does not blow always
• Peak demand is in the evening

• Production and demand are not in the same time,

we need to store energy
• Hydrogen is a clean, available, recyclable energy carrier

Energy carrier: H2 gas, how to make it, how to use it?

• Producing by Electrolyze 2H2O  O2+2H2

• Storing under pressure to reduce storage volume H2 O2
• Burning in Internal Combustion Engine
2H2 + O2  2H2O
• Generating electricity using a Fuel Cell

H2 Air
• Advantage: burning Hydrogen produces no CO2, only water!!

Storage types - Two main technologies:
Pressurized gas Metal hydride
• Room temperature storage • Hydrogen is stored in a specific
• Metallic tanks conditioned metallic powder
• Composite tanks Type III, IV • Absorption/Desorption is heat
dependent
• Easy to handle (2-5bar)
• Heavy

Metallic tanks for pressurized gas
• Heavy
• Medium pressure
• Usually big volume or modular stack

Type IV composite tanks for pressurized gas
• Made by filament winding
• Inside: Polymer liner,
Outside: Carbon and glass fiber composite
Ends: metallic bosses for connecting pipes
• After laying down the fibers on the liner,
the structure needs to be dried and cured
in an owen.
• Pressure resistance
• Light weight

Metal hydride storage tanks
• Hydrogen is stored in a metallic H2
powder compound which stores 85g H2 ≈ VS
1000NL 85g H2 = 5L
the gas in a smaller space than the @ 2 bar

gas itself occupies at the same

pressure.
• Absorption needs cooling
• Desorption needs heating
• Low pressure (2-5bar)

Applications: what are the specific needs?
• Mobile : tanks powering transport vehicles: cars, moto-cycles,
scooters, trucks, bicycles

• Nomad: tanks powering appliances that can be transported

• Trolley minibar for a train
• Autonomous lamps or cameras

• Stationary: not moving tanks: telecommunication relay, remote

locations

Applications: Mobile Low pressure metal hydride tanks for
convenience and short distances
• Direct refill from electrolyser (30bar)
High pressure composite tanks for • Pressure range 2-5 bar
greater autonomy (500km)
• Indefinitely recyclable
• Light weight
• Very high pressure 700bar
• Technical difficulties and higher
costs to handle high pressure

Applications: Nomad

• Small volume
• Low pressure (easy handling)
• Bigger autonomy than battery
• No CO2 emission

Applications: Stationary
• Big volume, traditionally steel tanks have been used
• Low pressure (<50bar)
• Long lifetime,
• Weight may be a priority
H2 autonomous room
Provides power to the
shelter at 2600m high
