Topic: Social Work

Live lecture:
It’s impossible to survive without a phone nowadays, payphones are virtually nonexistent. Look at
basic needs, but keep in our minds what are basics NOW, to keep up with the times.
Poverty is a social issue, shaped by social and economic factors, by a complex interplay of factors.
Social polarization- increasing trend of social inequality, increased segregation between social groups
(Stark divide in wealth, income).
Unequal distribution of opportunities- an example of exclusion.
Is social work working with the marginalized? Down and out? They do work with people across all
SES. Misconception- blame the victim/system (means individuals are responsible for their poverty
situations).
There is also a structural factor to poverty, like nations with systemic racism, agism and sexism
(blame the system).
