Application Software
Application software (App) is a kind of software that performs specific functions for the
end user by interacting directly with it. The sole purpose of application software is to aid
the user in doing specified tasks.
Types of Application Software
 General Purpose
 Special Purpose
 Custom-written
 Integrated
General Purpose
General-purpose application software is a kind of application that can be used for a variety
of tasks. They provide many features for its users. For example, a word processor could be
classed as general-purpose software as it would allow a user to write a novel, create a
restaurant menu, or even make a poster.

Examples of general-purpose application software include Word processors, Spreadsheets,


and Presentation software.
Specialized Software
Special purpose application software is a type of software created to execute one specific
task. For example, a camera application on your phone will only allow you to take and
share pictures. Another example would be a chess game, it would only allow you to play
chess.

Other examples of special-purpose application software are web browsers, calculators,


media players, calendar programs, etc.
Custom-Written Software
Custom software is a software application designed and developed for a particular
organization’s specific requirements. For example, a bank might use custom software to
manage its customer data and financial transactions.
Integrated Software
Integrated software is the term for a program that includes all the major types of
applications. For example: Word processor, spreadsheet, and database. And bring them
together into a single software package. E.g. Microsoft office and adobe.

Engagement:
Using the concept map concept, the teacher will ask students to identify any word that
comes to mind when they hear the term application software. After this, students will be
asked to share their definitions or understanding of application software. After a discussion,
the entire class will come together to create their definition of application software.
Exploration:
A short video will be shown to highlight the types of application software.
Video:
Students will be encouraged to listen attentively as they will be required to answer
questions based on the video presentation.
Explanation:
The teacher will engage students in a class discussion based on the PowerPoint
presentation.
Elaboration:
Students will complete a class activity.
