JACK AND THE BEANSTALK
Once upon a time there was a little child called Jack who lived in a little cottage with his mother. They
were very poor and very hungry. One day, Jack’s mother sent him out to sell the family’s old and sick
cow and this was a real challenge. After a long day, an old man gave Jack five magical beans and took
the cow. Jack’s mother got angry and threw the five beans out of the window. The next morning, a huge
beanstalk had grown overnight. Jack climbed up the beanstalk and found a huge castle. He went inside
and hid under a bed. He could see an enormous giant came into the room with a golgen hen that laid
golgen eggs and a magical harp that sang beautiful songs. Later on, the giant got so tired and fell asleep
at the table. Jack tiptoed carefully across the table and collected the giant’s treasures. While Jack was
creeping out of the castle , the harp started singing and the giant woke up and chased the little boy down
the beanstalk.
Jack ‘s mother heard the noise. She came out and chopped the beanstalk down with an axe.
Eventually, the beanstalk came crashing down to the ground. The giant’s body lay silently on the ground.
He was never seen again. Jack ran to his mother and his beanstalk adventures were over and Jack and his
mother could live happily ever after in their little cottage.

Mr. Stevens provided today's book review on his favourite childhood book, Alice’s Adventures in
Wonderland. Read the book review and check your answers to the previous task.

Alice's Adventures in Wonderland was published by Lewis Carroll. The book tells the story of Alice, a young girl,
who falls down in a rabbit hole and lands into a fantasy world that is full of weird, wonderful people and animals. My
favourite characters are: Alice, the white rabbit and the Mad Hatter. My favourite part was when Alice met the dazzling
Caterpillar who sits on a mushroom smoking a weird pipe.
Personally, at 16, I found the book very interesting. I loved the fantastic fantasy world Carroll created. I never expected
the events that happened because they were bizarre and unpredictable.
I loved the Cheshire cat's wit and intelligence. However, I disliked the number of characters and I found it uninteresting.
I give this fantastic book a rating of 5 out of 5 stars.
I would recommend this book for kids and teenagers because it increases imagination and creativity. Mr. Stevens

B. Read the following portrait and check your answers to the previous task:
Frozen is about two sister princesses “Elsa and Anna “from the Norwegian kingdom “Arendelle”. Elsa,
the elder sister of Anna, possesses ice magic powers. When Elsa becomes a queen, she accidentally froze her
sister’s head “Anna”. That accident was the start of their journey of adventures. Both sisters are beautiful,
caring girls. Anna is a young girl who is 18 years of age. She has a fair complexion with glittering turquoise
blue eyes and rosy chicks. She has long strawberry-blonde hair tied into two pigtail braids. She is always in her
“Buned” dress (traditional Norwegian clothing). Anna is funny, feisty and adventurous. She is very playful as
she likes to enjoy life. Moreover, Anna is highly-active, constantly shown running throughout the castle,
bouncing and flipping over furniture and speaking to the paintings on the walls. She is also very optimistic –
never wavered in the hope that she could reach her sister … even after all those years, all those knocks on the
door, and all those “Go away, Anna” reactions. Anna likes walking in the forests where she can play with
animals; while, she hates living in huge castles. On the other hand, her elder sister, Elsa is a young woman in her
early twenties with blue eyes and a small nose. She has long platinum blonde hair and usually wears simple
classic dresses. Elsa owns a strong personality. She is confident, brave and very patient as she embraces her
fears and could wait for many years until she came of age to take the throne. Moreover, she is a kind, loving
and selfless person as she loves her sister so much and she is willing to separate from her so she doesn’t hurt
her. She could have also used her powers for evil, but she didn’t. not only this but, Elsa is very elegant, mature,
and reserved. She seems to be very intelligent as well.
Although Elsa likes calmness, she dislikes loneliness and enjoys showing love to others. In the end, Elsa learned
she could control her powers through love.

Quote of the day: “Curiosity killed the cat”

Choose the best answer: The quote means that:
a. Being curious is a good thing.
b. Being curious can get you into trouble.

Read the story, then do the tasks that follow:

It was spring, the weather was very hot, and Alice was sitting in the garden. She had nothing to do. Her
sister was reading while her cat Dinah was mewing. But Alice did not find the book interesting. "How
stupid! she thought, "a book with no pictures or conversation in it." §1
Alice was going to bed, suddenly a white rabbit passed near her. That was not very extraordinary, and
Alice did not think it was very strange when she heard the rabbit say to itself, "Oh dear! Oh dear! I shall be
too late.” She understood later that it was not real; it was just a bizarre dream. But then the rabbit took a
watch out of its pocket and looked at it. She was very surprised and curious. She got up and hurried after it.
"Rabbits don't have pocket watches!", she told herself. §2
She went after the rabbit into its hole. She was running very fast. Before she could stop, she found herself
falling, falling, falling. But how strange! There were cupboards and bookshelves, pictures and maps, all
down the sides of the hole. She was looking at all the objects when she saw a little bottle on one of the
shelves. It was marked DRINK ME'. §3

D. Read the reminder and check your answer to the previous task:
Reminder
We often use the past continuous and the simple past together in order to say that an action
was in progress when another action interrupted it.

Practice:

Task 01: Join the three pairs of sentences in the table below with “while” or “when”. Make the
necessary changes. Don’t look at the story for the moment:
Sentence 1 When or While Sentence 2
1. A. Her sister was reading. B. Her cat was mewing.
2. A. She was considering B. A rabbit suddenly
what to do. passed near her.
3. A. She was looking at the B. She saw a little bottle
objects.

Task02: Use the information between brackets in the dialogue below to write meaningful sentences with
the conjunctions when, while and as like shown in the example:
Example:
John: I had a terrible day yesterday.
Peter: Really? What happened?
John: (I have a beautiful dream/ the telephone ring.)  While I was having a beautiful dream, the
telephone rang.

18
1. Peter: Then what happened?
John: (walk out the room u/ hit my foot on the table)

2. Peter: what next?
John: (have a bath/ someone / knock/ the door)
…………………………………………………………..
3. Peter: And then?
John: (open the door/ my dog/ get/angry/ bite me)
……………………………………………………………

WHEN/WHILE
PART01: Read the two grammar rules and examples for using the past simple and past continuous
with 'when' and 'while'. 1. when is used when you have a past continuous action followed by a past simple
action. The past simple action often interrupts the continuous one. Example: I was watching a film when the
phone rang.
2. while is used for two past continuous actions that happen at the same time. Example: I was watching a
film while my brother was talking on the phone.
Practice1: Following the rules above, complete the story with the verbs in brackets in their past simple or
past continuous form.
Yesterday, I (1) ......................... (finish) my English homework in my bedroom when I (2) .........................
(hear) a loud crash. I (3) ......................... (go) outside and (4) ......................... (see) tree branches and leaves
everywhere. It turned out my neighbour (5) ......................... (cut) down his tree while I (6) .......................
(do) my homework. He (7)......................... (apologize) to me and then I (8)......................... (help) him clean
up the mess. We (9) ......................... (clean) when my mum (10) ......................... (call) me in for dinner. She
didn't hear the loud noise because she (11) ......................... (listen) to music on her headphones while she
(12) ......................... (prepare) dinner.

Part02: Both 'when' and 'while' can also be used when you have a past simple action that comes
before a past continuous action.
Example: He lost his wallet when/while we were shopping. Remember, if you have a past
continuous action followed by a past simple action, you can only use 'when'.
Examples:
We were shopping when he lost his wallet. (right)
We were shopping while he lost his wallet. (wrong)

Practice: Using the two rules above, highlight whether you can use 'when', 'while' or 'both' as the
missing word in each sentence.
1. I was washing my hair ............... the power went out. when / while / both
19
2. I hurt my back ............... I was lifting the piano. when / while / both
3. She was setting the table ............... she dropped the fork. when / while / both
4. The school bus arrived ............... I was talking to my friend. when / while / both
5. Tim broke his leg ............... he was snowboarding. when / while / both
6. I was taking a photo ............... the accident happened. when / while / both
