- I researched about additional concepts and principles of a manure to biogas
digestion process.
Learnings:

The manure to biogas digestion process is facilitated by microorganisms. In

particular, these microorganisms digest manure without oxygen, hence, an anaerobic
environment is required for these microorganisms to do digestion. Also, the primary
product of a digestion process is biogas, in which biogas consists of methane, carbon dioxide
and hydrogen sulfide. Among the constituents of biogas, methane is the primary
combustible component that is a measure of overall valuable amount of energy recovered
from the organic waste. In the digestion process, the two steps that govern the production
of methane are acetogenesis and methanogenesis.

Acetogenesis: Manure to Organic Acids

In the acetogenesis process, bacteria called acetogens convert the solids of pig
manure into organic acids. This creates an acidic environment and thereby lower the pH
level. However, it is important to note that a much lowered pH level will lessen the activity
of methanogenesis. For this reason, only a certain amount of feedstock should be fed and
too much feedstock will increase the rate of acetogenesis.

Methanogensis: Organic Acids to Biogas

In the methanogenesis process, bacteria called methanogens convert the organic

acids produced from the previous step into biogas (methane, carbon dioxide and hydrogen
sulfide). This particular step requires a neutral pH. Consequently, in order to control the pH
of the digestion environment, buffers can be mixed to avoid major fluctuation in pH. Also,
methanogenesis’ by-products are essential fertilizers.
