Learnings:
The degradation and digestion of pig manure (organic wastes) into useful, organic
and energy-rich products by microbial action is an important process for livestock
companies if they are interested in looking for other alternatives of energy production.
Pig manure, despite labelled as “waste”, is still a valuable product in which energy
can be harnessed. This is because microbial digestion of these so called “wastes” convert
them into valuable combustible gases which can provide power if ignited. Also, given the
fact that the feedstock for producing alternative energy are “wastes”, financial burden is
minimal in terms of providing feedstock for the digester.
With the financial burden of providing feed for the digester, in consequence,
operational costs are also lessened. Thus, digestion of pig manure to provide an
alternative source of energy is advantageous in comparison to other energy sources in
terms of cost.
