Anaerobic Respiration in Yeasts
Anaerobic Respiration in Yeasts
Date:
Title: An investigation showing that carbon dioxide is produced when yeast respires anaerobically.
Aim: To show that carbon dioxide is produced during anaerobic respiration in yeasts.
Apparatus and Materials: 4 boiling tubes, Bunsen burner, tripod stand, wire gauze, 3 500ml beakers,
delivery tube, rubber bungs, test tube rack, glass rod, pipette, tap Place water, limewater, liquid paraffin,
yeast and brown sugar solution.
Diagram of Apparatus:
Method:
1. Place 10 mL of the yeast-brown sugar solution into 2 separate boiling tubes, labelled A and B.
2. Place tube B into a boiling water bath for 15 minutes.
3. Remove tube B and add a 1cm-thick layer of liquid paraffin gently down the sides of both tubes
using a pipette.
4. Stopper both tubes using the rubber bungs with the attached delivery tubes.
5. Place both experimental tubes into a water bath maintained at 38°C.
6. Submerge the open ends of each delivery tube into separate boiling tubes which have been
half-filled with limewater.
7. Record all observations made.
Discussion:
Precautions: State TWO precautions taken either for safety or for accuracy.
Sources of Error: State TWO sources of error which were within your control and may have resulted in
inaccurate results.
Limitations: State any TWO factors over which you had no control and which may have affected the
results.
