Unit Prayer Meeting – November 12, 2023

Anchor Verse: “Children, let us love not in word or speech but indeed and truth. Now, this is how we shall
know that we belong to the truth and reassure our hearts before him in whatever our hearts condemn, for God
is greater than our hearts and knows everything.”.” (1 John 3:18-20 NABRE)

The Grace We Seek: We ask for the grace to pursue what is good by being true to ourselves and practicing
mutual accountability to one another.

Video - How Habits of Honesty and Transparency Can Transform Your Life | Jennah Dohms | TEDxWhiteRock - YouTube

Topic: It’s Good to be True

Honesty should always be at the core of our relationships. God created us uniquely, and with the ability to
radiate goodness that resides within our hearts. It is by being true to our strengths, weaknesses, emotions, and
values that people can see the beauty of our character. And with loving correction and mutual accountability
within the family and community, we help others embrace their beauty and reality by practicing loving
correction and imposing mutual accountability within the family.

Fear stops us from upholding truthfulness. Specifically:

1. Fear of rejection. To be accepted, we often desire to please people, which may sometimes cause us to
pretend to be somebody else and hide who we truly are.
2. Fear of criticism. We often hide our imperfections to avoid judgement from others, thus losing sight of
the important things that we need to improve in ourselves.
3. Fear of being left out. To fit in, we strive to show only our best qualities and bury deep within us the
qualities we do not like.
4. Fear of conflict. Conflicts challenge our relationships. That is why we tend to avoid confrontations,
especially with our spouses and community members. Misunderstandings arise because the things that
we need to be addressed are almost always overlooked instead of resolved.

If not confronted, these fears lead to conflict within us and with others. Therefore, we need to fight fear with
courage:
1. Courage to accept. We are born not to fit in but to stand out. Let us practice being true to who we are
and seek the only validation we need, the one from God our Creator.
2. Courage to correct and to be corrected. According to Dohms, the best way to be loved is to be known.
By listening to others’ views of us, we can see how we can still grow and improve. If we want to be
truly loved, let us be open to corrections. If we want to genuinely love others, let us be brave enough to
correct and guide them.

This loving and hones relationship molds all of us to become the best version of who we are and who we can
be. Practicing honesty allows us to genuinely love each other. By being aware and true to the things in us that
need God’s healing, we can become better, together.

Key Takeaway:
Honesty should always be at the core of our relationships. Our desire to become better should be rooted in truth:
that we are made by a beautiful God in His image and likeness, therefore we are all beautiful. With this truth,
we can overcome the fears that prevent us from being true and striving to be the best version of ourselves.

Guide Question:
1. What fear stops you from being true to yourself or from being honest to your spouse, friends, or brethren
in the community?
2. What can you do to be true to yourself and the people around you?
