CHAPTER ONE
1. INTRODUCTION
1.1. Background of the Study

Physical education is an education which is give mainly through physical activity to develop and
maintain all aspects personality as physical mental and social well. term physical education is
the combination of two words physical and education the word physical refers to the body ,it is
often used is reference to various bodily characters such as physical strength, physical
development, physical health and physical appearance ( Baalpe, 1995).
Education is the process of human learning by which knowledge or skill improved when the
word education used with the word physical we get the phrase physical education which
basically refers to the process of education amid at activity geared to word of the development
and maintenance and the human body (Baalpe, 1995).
Physical education is an important part of the school curriculum and contribution in many ways
to the overall goals of education as it is the only subject in the curriculum developed to the
human movement. Development of motor skill and promotion of time physical practice or fitness
stand the stress of daily life individual can achievements practice of fitness by doing the reduce
movement muscle through Varity of exercise maintain physical practice of fitness on alifelong
process and in school always by part of routine (Almond, 200).
School is the only opportunity to access all children and let them take part in physical education
class activities and it is therefore theoretical to their physical development and health that they
receive a high quality experience that encourages them to continue to participate in physical
education. Researcher’s personal observation students spend large amount of physical education
class time being inactive hence to provide opportunity for physical activity. It is important to
identify sources that increase both physical education opportunity and levels of student’s
activities during physical education class.
Therefore researches hypothesized that the prevalence of physical education in Abala secondary
school is low providing daily opportunity to learn is not visible the important to understand the
mechanism through with and resource availability exert its effect the purpose of this study is to
access the challenges and practice of teaching physical education in Abala secondary school in
providing quality teaching learning to occur (MOE, 1994).
1.2 Statement of problem
This study will be to conduct on factors that challenge of teaching and learning process of
physical education class in Abala secondary school. The teaching learning process of physical
education in Abala secondary school requires various materials, facilities, adequate number of
subject teachers, and insufficient amount of text book and reference book. It seems requirement
in the curriculums to implement physical education. This problem initiates the writer to study the
practical and challenge teaching learning process of physical education in Abala secondary found
in (SNNP) in Wolaita zone.
1.3 Basic research question
This study will be toattempt to investigate and seek answer to the following basic research
question.
1. What is look like the practice of physical education in Abala secondary school grade 10th?
2. What are the challenges that students and physical education teachers have face during
teaching learning process of PE and sports in grade 10th?
3. What are the roles of students and PE teachers and school community need to play to make
PE and sports class more effective?
4. What are the possible solution for the challenge of teaching PE in Abala secondary school?
1.4 Objective of the study
1.4.1General objective of the study
The general objective of this study shall be to investigate the practical experience and challenges
in teaching physical education in Abala secondary school grade 10h.
1.4.2 Specific objectives of the study
1. To examine what look like the practical experience in teaching learning process physical
education in Abala secondary school.
2. To assess the major challenge and practice of teaching learning process of physical education
in Abala secondary school.
3. To identity the major roles of student’s physical education teachers and administrative bodies
in the school.
4. To forward some possible solutions to overcome the challenges that face in teaching, learning
process of physical education and sport in AbalaFaracho secondary school grade 10th students.
1.5 Significance of the study
- It may contribute to improve the quality of the teaching learning process.
- It may help to create awareness about the current implementing problems in teaching learning
process.
- It may contribute Mach to teachers and concerned bodies to moderate the strategies to apply the
current curriculum by informing the current practice and challenges of the teaching learning
process.
- The study may also serve as supporting document and initial point for further study in the area.
1.6 Delimitation of the study
The study concerns with assessing the practice and challenges of teaching learning process of
physical education. It might be good if it had covers and conduct in all Ethiopian secondary
school. However, to make the study more manageable and to complete within the available time
it is limited only Abala secondary school which is found in southern nations, nationality of
peoples in Wolaita Zone faracho town
1.7 Limitation of the study
In conducting this study the researcher have faced some difficulties. Among these difficulties the
shortage of time is one of that had limited the study to be focusing only one school.
In addition the shortage of finance and available materials also the other constraints that had
limited the soundness of the activities to be done on their time.
Finally in available of information is also the other constraints that the researcher had faced
throughout the study.
1.8 Operational definitions of terms
 Challenge:- the situation of being face some they need great mental or physical effort in
order to done success fully and test a person’s ability (Wikipedia) .
 Practice: -relating to experience relation or action rather than idea or imagination
(Wikipedia).
 Physical education:- the development of the human body stressing in sport and in
clouding hygiene (Wikipedia).

2. Review of Related Literature

According to Barrowetal 1989, physical education practice is clear work of qualified

professional were vital for the development health and physical education in all countries, it is
also clear that teacher and students working in school and other grass and organization play a key
role in identifying motivation and development. Physical education in general some physical
education practice challenges (wuest Bucher, 1999).
2.1 The Role of physical education in the school
Education contribute to the development advancement of perpetuation of the nation’s culture, the
desirable aspect society preserved and maintained through transmission of this value to youth,
education gives individual the knowledge and skills to function effectively, act responsibly and
contribute to society through education individual have the opportunity to acquire critical
thinking skill and to contribute to purpose full, social change. Educational institutions play a
primary role in developing society human resource schools colleges and university clearly the
most power full and effective institution that society has to impart the intellectual skills
knowledge, understand and appreciate needed by its citizen to make wise decision and good
judgment, and to logically analyze problems and work towards their resolution directly and
directly, education institution are the chief agents of societies progress.
Education must prepare individual to meet the challenges of society .therefore, our education
system should concern itself with the well-being of students in their preparation of a productive
and a meaning full life in which their individual potential is realized and in which freedom will
be assured, since physical education is a part of education in higher institution and its important
in all aspect.(wuest Bucher(1999,37,38).
2.2 Method of teaching PE and sport in high school
A. Group work
Group work is part of collaborative strategies of teaching learning. It is one of the best ways of
encouraging active learning by arranging the learners work together in group. It can take many
forms involving pairs of students working together or it can involve students who works
individual and come together in groups to compare and discuss the result of their group.
(kyiacoss,1998).
B. Discussion
Discussion in the classroom is an important kind of active learning strategy gives room for
students to exchange explore and air their views (nardos, 2000).however, they need to be
managed and organized well to be effective.
C. Project method
Project method is a natural life like learning activity involving the investigation and solving of
problem by individual or group of student (RCDR, 1999). Ideally project work should consist of
a task to achieve some definite goal of real personal value. The project method involves
cooperative investigation of real life situations or problem under the supervision of teacher.
(darry and terry, 2000)
D. Cooperative learning
This is a form of group work in which each group member has a specific task to complete within
the group. You may assign different tasks like facilitators, note taker timekeeper, leader,
observer, reporter, or task specific to the topic. Group members can assign tasks if appropriate.
The group is responsible for the outcome, which are evaluated against a greed criteria (HDP,
2008).
In, general this approach produce a close contact with real life situation, encourages cooperation
in between learners, offer opportunities to play a leader ship role.
E. Demonstration
A demonstration is an activity when the teacher demonstrates how to do something in front of
their class. The purposes of doing a demonstration is to show the student how to do something in
both words and actions when a teacher demonstrate, he/she should point out the process
gradually.
2.3. The role of teachers
Teacher were great role on society that they plan an important role in bring behavior change in
the student education out work, the student are expected to show a drastic change in the field of
academic life in which they are involved (S.M).Agro,1999).
To be effective the teachers should know much about his public needs interest level of moral
ability social attitude and talents degree of skill back ground of experience. Social qualities and
similar maters it is possibly to reduce from his fact that teacher should know about his / her
should per a plane that may him or her to each well try to get the advance important in the
massage it they directly and activity participate in the activity they are concerned they can play
their duties being together or alternatively it is through this technique that we can them affected
groups to progress will, (Wool, 1994).
2.4. Motivation
It is very important to persuade student to be activity their academic achievement that should be
invented to participate in the practice class’s activity in the form, i.e. Individual and one rouse
when this technique of group formation are put in to practice the teacher would have change of
identified his or her students weakness and strength (Zerihunetal, 1997) .
Motivation is come loud of intellectual drive that increasing somebody to purse course of action
if we provide a goal and if that goal is sufficiently attractive would strength motivation to
aprocesses new its own positive impact it appears in various forms to quit the lesson teachers
property should go to in line with the students book ground and present situation they should
have motivation when every they participation in the class room and out place room teaching
aids wish sportive topic should have problem they exercise are expected to be corrected regularly
in that she/she can identify their worrier and strength and it is possible change the teaching
technique (Partrot,E,1992).
2.5. Basic element of physical education practice learning
2.5.1 Face to face primitive interaction
This exist when students orally of one another how to solve problem discuss with another the
natural the classes makes and explains one another connection between present and learning ,it is
primitive in the sense that students assist encourage and support one another efforts to learn
(Armod ,1997,).
2.5.2 Individual accountability
The teacher need to ensure that the performance of one individual student sensed and the result
given by to the group and individual. It is important that the group now when need more
assistance in completing the assignment common ways to each student and randomly solution
ones student work to represent entire group (Capple, 1997)

secondary data will be to collect from relevant books, journals and internets (Websites) which
are direct relationship with the study.
3.4. Sample size and technique
From the population which is 126students, the researcher will be to select20 students and 1
physical education teacher by using simple random sampling technique from grade 10th students.
3.5 data collection tools
In the study to get adequate information the researcher would be utilized questionnaires’,
interview and observation.
3.5.1 Questionnaire
The questionnaire are to prepare by the researcher .the questionnaire has two parts which are
both 3 open ended and 3 close ended questionnaire that are prepared for students .
3.5.2 Interview
The second type of data collection tool is interview; in this study the researcher are used
structured types of interview for physical education teacher which is six in numbers.
3.5.3 School observation
The researcher has also made use of observation for gather information relevant to the study .the
classroom has been observed to get the relevant information that observation is useful to indicate
how the school organized and prepared for PE according to variety of activities such as, football,
basketball courts, teaching room, material store and volleyball therefore, to obtain more
information, observation in the school compound and learning process is used as data gathering
instrument.
3.6 Method of data analysis
After collecting and gathering of data from the respondent and from the direct observation, the
next step is analyzing the giving data. Quantitative and qualitative analysis of data are employed.
The data obtained from students through closed -ended questions are analyzing quantitatively.
