Executive summary
The main objective of this attachment is to determine how the theoretical courses are applied on
.the real world. The intention of practical attachment was to increase student’s knowledge and
enable student to compare what we have learn so far in class and what have experienced in
summer practical. To produce well qualified, self-reliant, active, change agent and real problem
solver student. In addition, the other objective is to investigate equal participation of Awash
Bank with other banks it realizes to its visions, mission and objective. Not only limited to this
but also emphasis the problems faced by us while we’re performing summer practical
attachment. Thus, practical attachment suggests solutions and some of policy implication
toward reducing the problems based on finding.

1. INTRODUCTION OF THE REPORT


Internship is working and learning experiences that provide hands on way for students to confirm
choice of major and/or career in a way they may be linked to an academic department and/or
done for academic credit.

An internship lasts between two-four months and may be part time or full time some are paid
while others.

1.1. Background of the Organization or AIB Wolaita Sodo Branch


The history of AIB S.C. shows about its establishment by 486 founding shareholders on
November 10, 1998 with a paid up capital of birr 242 Million.

It is the first private commercial bank in Ethiopia following the down fall of Military regime and
the declaration of market oriented economic policy.
It started banking operations on February 13, 1995. By the end of April 2016 the number of
shareholders and its paid-up capital increased to over 3,700 and Birr 2.2 Billion respectively.

Awash Bank S.C. established to perform the following functions:-

- Accepting saving demand and time deposits.


- Providing short and medium term loans, within a limited ceiling of long term loans.
- Buying and selling foreign exchanges.
- Buying and selling negotiable instruments and securities issued by the government, private
organizations or any other person.
- Have about one million account holders as of August 30/2017.
- AB is the first bank to introduce Automatic Teller Machine (ATM) to Ethiopia.
- Has 332 branches across the country
- In AB when the branch is will be off we use SMART SYSTEM and when the branch is will
be ON we use LMTS SYSTEM

2. OVERVIEW OF THE ORGANIZATION

2.1 Department of the Organization

- The Organization (AB) is supervised by board of directors


- The management of the bank is entrusted to the president
- During 2009/10 the bank implemented the recommendations of the business process
reengineering (BPR) study which organized the bank the rough process oriented corporate
structure.
According to this structure their core process and eight support process.
The following are the three core process and their respective responsibilities
1. Customers’ accounts and transaction service (CAT)
The process is responsible for the customer’s account and transaction services which
include: - account opening
: - deposit
: - payment
: - check clearance
: - money transfer
2. Trade service (TS)
Handle the international trade banking operations of the bank The responsibility of the
process include
- Attending Ts customers request
- Promoting Ts products
- Providing professional advice and information on Ts product organs
- Approving foreign currency for imports.
3. Credit service
The process mainly involves
- Potential customer recruitment
- Analyzing/ apprizing credit positions
- Approval, disbursement and following of proper repayment of loans
Credit service: - is organized in to two main process
- Credit management process

2.2 Activities Performed During internship


In practical attachment i try to second to work indifferent section of the organization.
- Supervises, Coordinates, directs and control the activities of the branch.
- Oversees account opening cash payment and receipts, trade services and general ledger.

Bank office with maker (checker In maker/checker place there are ma ny works which are
worked daily for example
- Check clearance
- Making checks (ready the checks which are ordered by customers who have account in the
organization )
- Follow up all incoming email and make sure for the implement
- Generally works done in the back office are non-cash Front office (cash)
Similar works are done in this first receive money from the chief cashier
- Sending money
- Receiving money
All the day supervise making balance check either it is balance or not accountant also casher
office

The place (secured place of money)in this place there is chief cashier and success or counting the
money packed the money distribute the money for the person who in the teller (cash)

- Foreign exchange
In this place there are works which are similar to day to day example foreign currency
and receive money from different countries by different systems for example:-
- Western union
- Express money
- Money gram
- Dahabshin
- When someone come to received money there must be number by that number (by digit) we
can determine by which system that money sent for
Example: - it is western union the number is 8 digits
:- it is express money the number is 16 digits
The receive money it is mandatory the customer to have renewed id or pass port

Opening
The place new customer come to open account the customer must fulfill the following

Two passport size photo
Free no money and no service charge
There are accounts which are saving and current account

Audit day to day works which are cash and non-cash works which performed by auditors are

2. Student solution:- A Characteristics and manner of the Account
Types of S/A interest bearing
Set up for student only for future past graduate student
Initial deposit shall be 25 birr
A/c holder shall get a birr 5 bonus per each money transfer mode
Can facility of 200% of the saved amount that shall not (exceed birr 150,000 if he/she saves for
at beast (2tears)from date of graduation)
Issue an ATM card (debit card)

3. Salary solution account Characteristics and manner of the account

- Issue ATM cards and bear normal saving interest rate
- Tem lean facility up to 250% of the total saved amount if

3. WHAT I HAVE LEARNED

3.1 Relevance of organization with my study


From starting date of my practical attachment as the general with the branch and particularly
with the department there is good connection with my study in foreign remittance transaction.
Theoretically since I have studied about foreign remittance in class and in my practical study
how to make transaction of that remittance this organization is relevant with my practical study.
In other way as general as organization there is also good connection with my study that for that
foreign transaction is the department of the organization and my study is related with it that has
relation with Economics again the organization and my study has good connection.

3.2 Applicability of the theories and other in class on the real world or practical work
environment
Applicability of theories in practical work environment is very interesting and important. In
management field there are many theories that applied on real world. Some theories which are
applicable when I conduct this practical attachment are the following.

The main activity of bank is accepting, depositing and lending money to its customers which
really related to financial management and principles of accounting.

 The theories of microeconomics for showing how to maximize profit and creating customer
satisfaction.
 The theories of principle accounting used to prepare workers payroll.
 The theories of economics used to show exchange of currency.
 From point of principle of marketing view how to create awareness to customers, how to
satisfy their needs.

3.3 Major problems that I faced during the attachment


I faced many problems, during I work this practical attachment the major ones are
mentioned as follow as:-

 At the beginning time they didn’t give me full freedom to do activities independently.
 The transportation system is very crowded, because of this it is difficult to me reach work
place on time.

 Shortage of some extra or additional working materials like chair and computers for trainers.
 Some employees are not interested for sharing their experience.

3.4. What is banking services?


Banking services means any government bank, foreign or local commercial banks or any
financial institutions or corporation who provide banking services through loans, bank guarantee,
demand draft, pay order, T.T, MT etc.
In consideration of bank charges. Role of banking in modern economy the role of banking in
modern economy is unlimited. Banks help in capital formation, savings, Investment, safely
money transfer to home; abroad, provides loans; advance for various ends to clients. Especially
imports and exports business are wholly depends on banks. Whole development of a country
depends on banking system. Bank gives loans to weak industry, undertake risk of import and
export, and safely transfer money.

4. ANALYSIS

4.1 Strength, weakness, opportunity and treat (SWOT) analysis of the organization

The Awash international bank Wolaita Sodo branch is private organization has its strength and
weakness side there are also have good opportunities and treats that speed up and fast the bank
over all work process respectively.

4.1.1 Strength of the organization.

 Respecting the law of the organization.

 Good efficiency and ethical conduct of staffs

 It’s give training for its employees to improve their profession.

 It gives excellence service for its customer which most of its customers get satisfaction in

proper manner.

 They respect each other and also they give priority for their work

4.1.2 Weakness of the organization

 There not enough employees.

 Weak information and file management of some workers

 There is no punctuality( being on time)

 There is some inefficiency material like chair tables and computers for trailing staffs

4.1.3 Opportunity of the organization

 Have a good location.

 Steady and fast growth of population is good opportunity for increase bank

customer.

 Availability of educated man power in the town.

 Development of information technology

If the organization follows the current organizational structure for the future may face the

following challenges.

 Volatility of currency

 Electrical power

 Poor credit culture and know how about banking and its service within the society

 Most people are having less knowledge about taking loan from bank.

 Connection problems

 Economic condition of the country

5. CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION

5.1 Conclusions
The AIB was established to perform accepting demands and time de posits. Proving short and
medium term loan with in a limited ceiling of long term loans, buying and selling foreign
currency. Customer satisfaction quality service innovation team work integrity deposit the
strength Awash international bank have weakness some staff members are late comer and there
is a problem of supplies which used to accomplish the day to day activities like cash counting
machines, there are a network problem at the time and frequent power interruptions.
Finally AB plays a catalytic role in the economic progress and development of the country
combines wide capital base with753 talented and committed employees.

5.2 Recommendation
If the employees of awash international of Ethiopia wolaita sodo branch are punctual there will
be effective customer service. In order to fulfill customer satisfaction and for efficient customer
service the bank have responsibility to have enough suppliers that is used to accomplish the day
to day activities. If there is enough counting machine it have great role to be fast and to give
service for many customers. The AB (Awash bank Ethiopia) should inform to Ethiopian like
and power agency (ELPA) to get enough power distribution.
