GEOTECHNICAL INVESTIGATION FOR PROPOSED
PROJECT AT DAHEJ, GUJARAT
1.0 INTRODUCTION
S prepared this soil investigation report for proposed LPG Jetty at Dahej, Gujarat. RITES LIMITED
authorized SHREE GEOTECH to carry out geotechnical investigation with scope of services as outlined below.
This report is prepared for the exclusive use of our client and their consultants for design of this project. In the
event that any changes are made in the character, design or layout for the improvements, we must be contacted
to review the conclusions and recommendations contained in this report to determine whether modifications
are necessary. This report presents results of the soil investigation and geological information along with
foundation recommendations for the proposed structure.
Sinking of total 19 boreholes on land and on water designated up-to various depths below ground level.
Collection of disturbed and undisturbed soil samples and transportation of selected soil samples to laboratory
for its analysis.
Laboratory testing and analysis.
Submission of detailed interpretative geotechnical report.

relative density of cohesion less soils and consistencies of cohesive soils. Each sample retrieved from SPT spoon
is inspected for visual identification of strata as per IS 1498. The samples are preserved in polythene bags, duly
numbered and N values mentioned for proper identification.
The sampler is lowered to the bottom of the borehole. The following information is noted and recorded:
Depth of bottom of borehole below ground level,
Penetration of the sampler into the soil under the combined weight of sampler and rods (noted from
readings of the scale over the drill rod at the top),
Water level in the borehole or casing and
Depth of bottom of casing below ground level.
2.6 SAMPLING
Disturbed wash samples were collected from the boreholes at required interval for visual classifications
wherever core recovery was poor to very poor.

5.3 SEISMICITY
5.3.1 SEISMIC ZONE
The state of Gujarat falls under Zone II to Zone IV seismic zones of India. Dahej falls under Zone III, which is
classified as moderate-risk damage zone. This zone is allotted a zone factor 0.16 as per IS Code.
1.5
β = [0.99+ (FC /1000)]
α = 5.0 and β = 1.20 for FC >= 35.0 %
CRR M=7.5 is given by the following equation:
1 ( ) 50 1
. = + + −
34 ( ) 135 [10( ) + 45]$ 200
Hence the CRR for a particular earthquake magnitude is determined as
CRR = CRRM=7.5 * MSF * Kσ * K
The MSF value is 0.85 for earthquake of magnitude 8.0.
K σ and K taken as 1.
The factor of safety against liquefaction, FS , is given as
FS = CRR/CSR
The value of CSR and CRR are computed at different depth and depth susceptible to liquefaction is
determined.
Liquefaction is probable when FS is less than 1.0.

As observed liquefiable strata is encountered near the top 5m to 13m in boreholes. Structures should be
designed with necessary seismic parameters and precautions as per IS 1893.

A) SKIN•FRICTION•CAPACITY•OF•PILES:
1) ULTIMATE•SKIN•FRICTION•IN•LAYER•IIIb•(8m-9.5m)•
Ultimate Skin Friction =a.Cu + K !va tanf
Where,
a = Adhesion Factor = 1 (From IS 2911 Part 1 Section 2)
Cu = Undrained cohesion = 3.2 t/m2
K = coefficient of earth pressure = 1 (IS 2911)
Phi = angle of friction between pile and soil f = 24.9o (Conservatively restricted)
va = average effective overburden pressure along pile shaft (limited to a depth of 15xD)
= (8.75×0.8) = 7 t/m2
Page | 47
Therefore,
SFULT = (1 x 3.2) + (1 * 7 * tan 24.9) = 6.449 ton/m2
Therefore,!Skin!Friction!Capacity!of!1000mm!dia.!piles!=!"DL!(6.449) = 30.4 tons
2) ULTIMATE•SKIN•FRICTION•IN•LAYER•IIIc•(9.5m-13.5m)•
Ultimate!Skin!Friction!=a.Cu!+!K! va tanf
Where,
a = Adhesion Factor = 0.5 (From IS 2911 Part 1 Section 2)
Cu = Undrained cohesion = 8.3 t/m2
K = coefficient of earth pressure = 1 (IS 2911)
Phi = angle of friction between pile and soil f = 20.5o (Conservatively restricted)
va = average effective overburden pressure along pile shaft (limited to a depth of 15xD)
= (11.5×0.8) = 9.2 t/m2
Therefore,
SFULT = (0.5 x 8.3) + (1 * 9.2 * tan 20.5) = 7.589 ton/m2
Therefore,!Skin!Friction!Capacity!of!1000mm!dia.!piles!=!"DL!(7.589) = 95.5 tons
3) ULTIMATE•SKIN•FRICTION•IN•LAYER•IIId•(13.5m-17.5m)•
Ultimate!Skin!Friction!=a.Cu!+!K! va tanf
Where,
a = Adhesion Factor = 0.95 (From IS 2911 Part 1 Section 2)
Cu = Undrained cohesion = 4.6 t/m2
K = coefficient of earth pressure = 1 (IS 2911)
Phi = angle of friction between pile and soil f = 18o (Conservatively restricted)
va = average effective overburden pressure along pile shaft (limited to a depth of 15xD)
