4.1.5 The insulators shall be able to withstand the mechanical stresses which can
occur during transport, handling and installation temperatures as low as
minus 5oC, in addition to the mechanical stresses which can occur during
the lifetime of the overhead line at temperatures from minus 5oC to 93oC.
4.2 Ratings
4.2.1 The long rod insulators shall have the minimum specified mechanical
failing loads as shown in Table 1.

I-suspension (single/double suspension), Vee-suspension and tension
strings (single/double/quad tension) shall be specified in the data schedule.
4.2.3 The leakage distance of the complete string (suspension or tension) shall be
based on a specific creepage distance of 50mm/kV (coastal area),
40mm/kV and 31mm/kV (inland area) as applicable. The required specific
creepage distance shall be specified in the data schedule.
4.2.4 Long rod insulator strings shall be designed for the basic insulation levels
and the service conditions as specified in 01-TMSS-01, latest revision.
4.2.5 The long rod insulators (complete string) shall have a corona extinction
voltage level of not less the values shown in Table 02 when tested in
accordance with IEC 61284.
4.3 Materials
4.3.1 The insulator shells shall be made of the highest grade, dense,
homogeneous wet-process aluminous porcelain. The entire exposed wet-
process aluminous porcelain surface of the insulator shell shall be glazed,
relatively smooth and free from imperfections. The porcelain used shall be
non-porous with high dielectric strength, chemically inert and high fusion
point. The insulators shall be designed to withstand a water jet pressure of
3800kPa.
4.3.2 The entire exposed porcelain surface of the insulators shall be standard
glazed of brown color and of uniform coverage and thickness. The entire
porcelain surface of the insulators shall be smooth and free of
imperfections.
4.3.3 Metal parts shall be made of a good commercial grade of malleable iron,
ductile iron or forged steel, galvanized in accordance with 01-TMSS-01.
The thickness of zinc coating on the insulator clevis caps (end caps &
intermediate attachments) shall not be less than 0.110mm (770g/m²) in
accordance with Specification 01-TMSS-01.
4.3.5 Cotter pins hump back type shall be used as the locking devices. The
locking devices shall be resilient corrosion resistant and of sufficient
mechanical strength. The cotter pins shall be made of phosphor bronze,
brass or austenitic stainless steel.
4.4 Fabrication
4.4.1 The insulator surface shall be shaped and spaced for effective natural
cleaning and effective use of leakage distance for desert conditions. The
shape of the long rod insulators shall be aerodynamic type (open profile)
without under-ribs and designed in accordance with IEC/TS 60815-2. The
ratio of shed spacing to shed protrusion shall be greater than 0.65.
4.4.3 The insulators shall be radio and television interference free at operating
voltage. Radio Interference Voltage (RIV) of a complete string shall not
exceed 40dB above 1μV when measured across a resistance of 300 ohms.
The test voltage shall be the highest system voltage (per 01-TMSS-01)
divided by √3 and the frequency for the RIV measurement shall be 1MHz.
RIV measurements shall be made in accordance with International Special
Committee on Radio Interference (CISPR) Publication 16-1 and results
evaluated in accordance with CISPR Publication 18-2.
4.4.4 The hardware shall be cemented on the porcelain, loading the porcelain
with low intensity compression grip over a large area.
4.4.5 The insulator core shall be free from cracks and voids, which may
adversely affect the insulator’s strength and performance.
4.4.6 The complete insulator strings shall be equipped with appropriate power
arc protection devices such as arcing horns and arcing rings/corona rings on
the live end as well as on the intermediate and earth ends. The design of the
arcing rings shall be such that the final burning point of the arcing
horns/rings is on the upside for the tension and V/I-strings to avoid the arc
plasma while going upward through the insulators.
4.4.7 The design of insulator end caps and the intermediate attachments shall be
suitable for the hot line/live line maintenance operations.
4.4.8 The design of the insulators shall be such that stresses due to expansion and
contraction in any part of the insulator shall not lead to deterioration.
4.4.9 The metal parts shall be designed to transmit the mechanical stresses to the
shell by compression and develop uniform mechanical strength in the
insulator. The end caps shall be circular with inner and outer surfaces
concentric and of such design that they will not yield or distort under
loading conditions.
4.4.10 The metal parts shall be free from cracks, seams, shrinks, air holes, blow
holes and rough edges. All metal surfaces shall be perfectly smooth with no
projecting parts or irregularities which may cause corona. All load bearing
surfaces shall be smooth and uniform so as to distribute stresses uniformly.
The metal parts shall not show any microscopically visible cracks,
insulations and voids.

and approval during bidding stage. The test results shall be considered valid
for a period of five years only, after which these tests shall be repeated in
case of any further supply from the same manufacturer and from the same
