Dierdorff E. C. (2020). Time Management Is About More Than Life Hacks
https://hbr.org/2020/01/time-management-is-about-more-than-life-hacks

Summary
Thesis Statement Time management is about more than life hacks, you must improve your
(One sentence) time management skills in three areas: awareness, organization, and
adaptation.

Points Discussed 1) Measuring Time Management Skills.

 All three abilities were equally important to overall time
management performance.
 Participants struggled the most with awareness and adaptation
skills, with assessment scores that were 24% lower on average
than for arranging skills.
 The findings contradicted frequent beliefs about the benefits and
drawbacks of multitasking.
2) How to improve Your Time Management Skills.
 Improve your self-awareness of your time management abilities
which can be performed by the use of objective evaluations such
as a microsimulation, soliciting input from others such as peers or
bosses, or setting a baseline of behaviours against which to
measure progress.
 Recognize that your preferences are important, but not how you
think as self-awareness of one's time management preferences or
personality, such as multitasking or being proactive, can help you
identify where you might struggle when your change efforts go
against previous patterns.
 Dierdorff (2020) stated that “It is best to prioritize your skill
development, focusing on the most pressing skill need first and
then moving on to the next.”

3) Developing awareness skills

 Determine your best performance period by dividing your average
day into three to four time slots and rank these slots from most to
least productive over the course of a week.
 After completing a job, assess how long you anticipated it would
take and how long it really took.
 Dierdorff (2020) stated that “When you think you might be
spending too much time on an activity, step back and evaluate its
importance”

4) Developing arrangement skills.

 Stay away from the "mere urgency effect" because the ideas of
urgency and significance are linked yet distinct: Urgent activities
need urgent attention, whereas essential jobs have far-reaching
and long-term implications.
 Dierdorff (2020) states that “Tasks that are both urgent and
important should be done first.”
 Reduce the number of underestimating mistakes especially when
making plans, solicit feedback from a third party regarding your
estimated time needs.
5) Developing adaptation skills
 Short bursts of exertion are recommended especially to avoid
procrastination, put forth maximal effort for 15- to 30-minute
periods when activities appear overwhelming.
 Make an effort to reduce time wasters by setting aside no-disturb
times and disable social media sites during important work hours.
 Dierdorff (2020) states that “Reminders should have detailed
explanations or descriptions, not one or two words that fail to
describe the task’s importance, expected quality, and so forth.”

Summary This article tells us that time management is not only about life hacks.
There is certainly no lack of advice as there are a plethora of books,
blogs, hacks and apps designed to improve time management with an
array of ready-to-use tools. However, the most frustrating reality for
people attempting to improve their time management is that no matter
how well-designed these tools are, they are unlikely to work. We can
improve our time management skills in three areas which is through
awareness, organisation, and adaptation. Given that the majority of apps
and hacks deal with task planning and organisation, the most familiar of
these three skills is probably arrangement. However, awareness and
adaptation skills are not as widely acknowledged. The irony is that we
need to become better time managers of our own efforts in order to
improve time management - to prioritise our developing efforts. This path
begins with a shift away from alluring quick fixes and towards evaluating
and improving our basic time management skills.
Critique a. Is the book/journal article easy to understand?
Yes, it is easy to understand as the article is really straightforward. All the
points about improving time management are clear and has elaborations
making readers have no difficulty in understanding the points given. As
the reader, I had acquired knowledge about time management skills and
it can be improved in three areas: awareness, organization, and
adaptation.

b. Is it clear and well-set out?

Yes, it is clear as the review paper has a smooth flow that makes the
reader read it with ease. The points about time management skills were
given examples that makes it coherent. The ideas were also organized
and well-set out.

c. Does it provide a useful introduction to a reader who is new to the

topic/issue?
The article provides a useful introduction as the author briefly talks about
the topic before explaining it in depth.
