Publishing
Publishing forms a major activity of the Trust. It publishes a wide variety of reasonably priced
quality books ranging from works of fiction to books on Medical Sciences and cutting-edge
technology for all segments of the society and for all age groups, including a wide variety of
illustrated books for children. Over the years, the Trust’s determined efforts in developing
a strong and inclusive policy towards publishing is also apparent in the variety of books
published for the neo-literates and the visually impaired.
The Trust publishes books in all major Indian languages, which includes Asamiya, Bangla, Bodo,
English, Gujarati, Hindi, Kannada, Kashmiri, Malayalam, Manipuri, Maithili, Marathi,
Nepali, Odia, Punjabi, Sanskrit, Sindhi, Tamil, Telugu and Urdu. In addition to this, the Trust
has also published books in Ao Naga, Bhojpuri, Bhili, Bhatri, Halbi, Himachali, Kokborok,
Konkani, Khasi, Garo, Lepcha, Bhutia, Mising, Limboo, Mizo, Newari, Maghi, Tibetan, and
Sanskrit among others.
The Trust has expanded its publishing programme in many minor languages. During the
year, several books for children were published in Asuri, Biho, Birajia, Bhumij, Ho, Khadiya,
Kudukh and Mato languages.
The Trust publishes a quarterly magazine in Hindi, titled Pustak Sanskriti, which carries
articles on various interesting topics related to books and contemporary issues of the society.
In addition, a monthly NBT Newsletter in English is brought out, which provides complete
information regarding the various literary, children’s and other activities organised by the
Trust.
During the period under review, 2392 titles were published by the Trust. These included 103
originals, 314 translations, 1962 reprints and 13 revised editions.
Braille Books
National Book Trust, India in collaboration with All India Confederation of the Blind (AICB)
have jointly published a set of books in Braille for visually impaired readers. More than 350
books have been published in Hindi, English, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi and
Tamil languages. These books have been taken from various series under which NBT publishes
books like Aadan Pradan, Classics, Creative Learning Series, National Biography, Nehru Bal
Pustakalaya, India—The Land and The People, Young India Library, Popular Science, Popular
Social Science, among others.
During the New Delhi World Book Fair 2021, a programme on Poetry Recitation followed
by a discussion on ‘Mother Tongue and Braille Books’ was organised in association with
AICB.
E-books
On the digital format, the Trust has made available many of its popular titles across e-platforms.
Around 120 titles have been published in Bangla, English, Hindi, Tamil and Telugu languages.

Mobile Exhibitions
The Trust has been trying to make its books available to the people at their doorsteps through
Mobile Exhibitions. So far it has organised more than 15,000 Mobile Exhibitions throughout
the country including the North-Eastern States. During the period under report, the Trust
organised Mobile Book Exhibitions at about 54 places in and around Delhi/NCR, Puducherry
and Uttar Pradesh.
Literary Activities
The Trust organises several book-related activities for the development of the publishing

industry of the country. It organises workshops and seminars for those involved in the
development, production and distribution of books. It also organises author’s meets and other
literary activities such as book release functions from time to time. In addition, the Trust
organises various literary events on major national and international days like World Book
& Copyright Day, Constitution Day, National Education Day, Vigilance Awareness Week,
National Unity Day, among others. During the period under review, over 50 activities were
organised by the Trust.

annual feature, it also conducts short-term training courses of one-to-two week duration in
other parts of the country. During the period under report, because of pandemic situation the
course was organized online. Three Online Courses in Book Publishing of 3-months duration
each were organized by the Trust viz. First Online Book Publishing Course (26 June to 20
September 2020); Second Online Book Publishing Course (26 September to 20 December
2020); and Third Online Book Publishing Course (20 February to 16 May 2021).
Book Promotional Activities by the NBT Regional Offices and Book Promotion Centres
Besides the Northern Regional Office at its headquarters, the Trust also has three Regional
Offices at Bengaluru, Mumbai and Kolkata as well as Book Promotional Centres at Agartala,
Chennai, Cuttack, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Kochi and Patna. These offices are primarily
responsible for the marketing and sales of NBT publications. The regional offices also
participate in various Book Fairs organised both by the Trust and other agencies throughout
the country. They also organise NBT book exhibitions at various places in their respective
regions. The offices are also responsible for enlisting distributors and agents for the sale of
NBT publications. During the period under review, over 45 new agents/distributors were
enrolled. It also enrolled 537 new Book Club members.
Grant-in-Aid Programme
The Ministry had entrusted the scheme of Financial Assistance to Voluntary/Private
organisations for organising Seminars/Training Courses/Workshops/Annual Conventions/
Book Fairs related to the Book Promotional Activities of the Trust. Grants are released to
the organisations by the Trust to meet 75% of the approved expenditure of such Book Fairs,
Seminars, etc. Besides, the Trust also provides assistance to authors and publishers for the
publication of reasonably priced university level text and reference books and for books on
Medical Science under its Subsidy Scheme. During the period under review, no grant was
released by the Trust.
New Initiatives
Corona Studies Series
Realising the extraordinary psychological, social, economic and cultural impact of Corona
Pandemic for the human society in times to come, National Book Trust, India, launched a
series of books under ‘Corona Studies Series’ to document and to provide relevant reading
materials for all age-groups for the post-Corona readership needs. Under this series, seven titles
were published under the sub-series "Psycho-Social Impact of Corona Pandemic and the Ways
to Cope" which include Vulnerable in Autumn: Understanding the Elderly; The Future of Social
Distancing: New Cardinals for Children, Adolescents and Youth; The Ordeal of Being Corona
Warriors: An Approach to Medical and Essential Services; New Frontiers at Home: An Approach
to Women, Mothers and Parents; Caught in Corona Conflict: An Approach to the Working
Population; Making Sense of It All: Understanding the Concerns of Persons with Disabilities; and
Alienation and Resilience: Understanding Corona Affected Families.

The books were released virtually by Dr Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank,’ Hon’ble Union
Minister for Human Resource Development on 15 May 2020. While releasing the books, Dr
Pokhriyal congratulated both NBT and the authors for their efforts to bring together this
significant material in book form for easy reading.
#StayHomeIndiaWithBooks
As part of #MyBookMyFriend Campaign launched by Dr Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank,’
Hon’ble Union Minister for Human Resource Development to help people spend quality time
at home during corona pandemic, National Book Trust, India in its endeavour to promote the
campaign, launched #StayHomeIndiaWithBooks!
Under this initiative, NBT provided over a hundred books across genres including fiction,
biography, popular science, teacher’s handbooks, and books for children and young adults
in different Indian languages, for free download at NBT’s website https://nbtindia.gov.in.
Some select titles include, Holidays Have Come, Animals You can’t Forget, Nine Little Birds, The
Puzzle, Gandhi-Tattva-Shatakam, Women Scientists in India, Activity-Based Learning Science, A
Touch of Glass and Gandhi: Warrior of Non-Violence.
Bilingual Books
With New Education Policy being implemented by the Government of India and its focus on
promoting the mother tongue, National Book Trust, India will be bringing out bilingual books
for children. The bilingual books will be published in different Indian languages according to
the needs of the young readers of a particular region under the Nehru Bal Pustakalya series.
Some of the select NBT books to be published in bilingual format are: A Friend Forever,
Anandi’s Rainbow, Fu-Ku: An Alien, One Day and Why?

Edition was available for access round the clock. Besides, the online sessions were available at
NBT’s YouTube channel. With more than 165 e-stalls, both Indian and foreign visitors from
abroad browsed through and purchased the books. The website had a hit of more than 2.8
million.
Financial Performance
During the Financial year 2020-21, the Trust achieved net sales of Rs 8185.43 lakhs. The total
revenue earned during this period was to tune of Rs. 15061.34 lakhs.

Grant-in-Aid
The total expenditure during the financial year 2020-21 was Rs. 8261.54 lakhs. Out of this
Rs. 4068.93 lakhs expenditure had incurred against the Grant-in-Aid and Rs. 4192.61 lakhs
expenditure was met from own sources.

Publishing
The NBT provides a wide variety of books for all age groups on all subjects keeping in view
the needs of its readers and demands of a fluctuating market. A brief note on the various series
and on the number of books published under each series during 2020-21 is as follows:
Aadan Pradan
Aadan Pradan is a series of particular importance because of its unique potential for forging
national integration through the exchange of creative literature of the different regions.
It presents well-known literary works, mainly novels, short stories, anthologies of popular
poetry and reminiscences, of a particular language, to people of other Indian languages.

A total of 51 titles were published under the series during the year including 2 originals, 1
revised, 6 translations and 42 reprints. Of these, 4 in Bangla, 2 in English, 14 in Gujarati, 14
in Hindi, 6 in Punjabi, 3 in Marathi, 5 in Tamil, 2 in Telugu and 1 in Urdu. Significant titles
include Asthinapuram & Titas Ekti Nadir Nam.
Afro-Asian Countries
In the post-colonial world, countries of Asia and Africa have emerged as powerful cultural,
social, political and economic forces thereby becoming a significant field of study due to
similarity of concerns. The books under the series focus on the problems and prospects
of sustainable development, globalisation and interdependence in the fields of science and
technolog y, trade, agriculture, infrastructure, education, health, strategic alliances, etc. in
these geo-political regions.
Under this series, 1 title in English and 1 title in Odia were reprinted.
Autobiography
This series comprises autobiographies of distinguished social, political and literary figures of
India, whose contributions have made the country proud.
During the year, one reprint in English, namely, Young India was published.

Under this series, 91 titles were published during the year, comprising 38 reprints, 34
translations and 19 original. These include: 7 in Asamiya, 1 in Bodo, 16 in Haryanavi, 3 in
Kannada, 9 in Odia and 1 in Telugu, 2 in Bangla, 34 in Hindi and 18 in Marathi. Significant
titles include Afwahon Ka Bazaar, Akal Ki Maar, Aur Chela Bhaag Gaya, Bhagwan Gayab Hai,
Bheeru Kude Wala, Ek Kanjoos Seth, Kartvya, Katha Kaho Na Maa, Kismat Ki Talaash, Lautna
He Hoga, Master Daulat Ram, Nasha Ek Abhishaap Hai, Pani Ka Maan, Tare Aasmaan Par, and

Classics
Since only contemporary works are published under Aadan Pradan series, Classical Indian
Literature is brought out under this series.
During the year, 2 titles were published in Hindi which include 1 translation and 1 reprint.
2 original titles were published in Bangla and 1 original title was published in Odia. Titles include Bahah
Mah and Simmi Harshita Ki Shresth Kahaniyan.

General Series
Significant titles which cannot be covered under the above series are published as General
titles. Books published under this series provide an in-depth study of the subject and also serve
as authentic reference material.
During the year, 90 titles were published, including 1 in Bangla, 1 in Bhojpuri, 6 in English, 2
in Gujarati, 60 in Hindi, 2 in Malayalam, 1 in Marathi, 2 in Odia, 5 in Punjabi, 1 in Sanskrit,
6 in Tamil and 3 in Urdu. These include: 14 originals, 4 translations, 2 revised and 70
reprints. The significant titles published include Kuchh Hamar Kuchh Raur, Aadi Shankram,
Asia Ke Hridayanchalon Mein Bharat Bharati, Bharat Vaibhav, Kashmiri Dar pan, Megho Ke Desh
Mein, Purvottar Ki Janjattiye Krantiyan, Veerbala Teeru Rauteli, Ninder Gugianvai Di Chunavin
Vartak, Sarvottam Samkalin Punjabi Kahaniyan.
Folkore
The Folklore series enables the readers of one region to get acquainted with folklore which had
shaped the cultural identity of those living in other regions of the country. Descriptions of the
area, people, myths, mytholog y, religion, customs, traditions, fairs and festivals, music, dance,
drama, art & craft, and folk literature are also included in the books of this series.
Thirteen reprints, 1 translation and 4 original titles were printed, during the year, including
1 in Asamiya, 1 in English, 2 in Kannada, 2 in Punjabi, 1 in Bangla, 1 in Gujarati, 9 in Hindi
and 1 in Odia. Among the significant titles published are Sahariya Adivasi Jivan Aur Sanskriti,
Odishara Kimbadanti, Battaan Ghagar Desh Dian, Lok Naklaan: Siddhant Te Muhandra.

National Biography
The objective of the National Biography series is to bring out biographies of Indian women and
men who have made outstanding contribution towards the development of Indian society,
culture, science, economy, polity and also of modern Indian sensibility. These provide an
authentic, objective, comprehensive and analytic account of the person’s life and times.
Under this series, 109 titles were published during the year. These include 3 in Asamiya, 1 in
Maithili, 3 in Telugu, 4 in Bangla, 23 in English, 15 in Gujarati, 40 in Hindi, 3 in Kannada, 6
in Marathi, 7 in Odia and 4 in Punjabi. The titles consist of 8 originals, 5 translations and 96
reprints. Significant titles include Swami Sahajanand Saraswati, Kushok Bakula Rinpoche Ek
Yug Pravartak Bhikshu, Parmananda Madhvam, Sacchidananda Routray, Banda Singh Bahadur,
Dr Ganda Singh, Ravi Narayan Reddy, T Prakasham.
Navlekhan
Select writings of young authors across languages, who are below forty and whose work have
not been published before, are brought out under this series in various languages.
Under this series, one title was reprinted during the year in Gujarati and 1 original title
published in Bangla. The significant title is Ram Mohan Roy.

Popular Science
This series aims at enabling the average educated reader to understand the world around them,
appreciate the progress of science, and learn about the role of science and technolog y play in
everyday life, emphasizing, wherever possible, India’s contribution to the field. The books in
this series are written in a lucid, easy-to-understand, simple style and illustrated with anecdotes
and analogies from daily life. Diagrams, sketches and photographs elucidate the text.
One hundred and fifty nine titles were published during the year, including 6 originals, 9
translations, 2 revised and 142 reprints. The language-wise editions include 8 in Asamiya, 1 in
Bodo, 1 in Punjabi and 2 in Telugu, 5 in Bangla, 88 in English, 5 in Gujarati, 38 in Hindi, 1 in
Kannada, 4 in Marathi and 6 in Odia. Significant titles include Animal Architects, Anna Kahan
Se Aata Hai, Odia Bijnana Kahani, Dilchasp Kahani Dharti Amber Di, Venu Gunje Gagan Gaje
and Vigyan Sanchar Aur Sancharak.

One title was published under this series. This included 1 reprint in Gujarati namely, Bridging
Connection: Sri Lanka Ki Kahaniyan.

New Delhi
World Book Fair 2021
National Book Trust, India organized the New Delhi World Book Fair 2021: Virtual Edition
from 06-09 March 2021 through the Virtual Exhibition platform. Dr. Ramesh Pokhriyal
‘Nishank’, Hon’ble Union Minister of Education inaugurated the fair on 5 th March 2021.
Speaking about NEP-2020 as the Theme of NDWBF-2021, he said that the National Education
Policy will take the local to the global level. The Hon’ble Minister of Education also
congratulated National Book Trust, India and commended NBT efforts towards providing
quality content to the nation.
On the occasion, Hon’ble Minister of Education also launched 17 bilingual titles published
by NBT under the implementation policy of the NEP-2020. These titles have been published
in bilingual format under the Bilingual Edition series for Children as per the guidelines of the
National Education Policy 2020 with the objective to create supplementary reading materials
for children to help them adapt suitably to the multilingual fabric of the country.
Prof. Govind Prasad Sharma, Chairman, and Shri Yuvraj Malik, Director, NBT also spoke on
the occassion and talked about the first-ever virtual book fair in the country.
Theme Pavilion
This year, the theme of the New Delhi World Book Fair 2021–Virtual Edition was ‘National
Education Policy-2020.’ The Policy is a vision document that aims to universalize the Indian
Education System from Pre-Primary levels to Higher Education. The Policy endeavours to
enhance the quality of education equally for all and move in the direction of strengthening
India as a global superpower.
Promoting the spirit of “Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat”, Prime Minister Narendra Modi
has said, “Aspects such as widening the availability of scholarships, strengthening
infrastructure for Open and Distance Learning, Online Education and increasing the usage of
technolog y have received great attention in the NEP. These are vital reforms for the education
sector.”
The National Education Policy has long-term significance and impact on the entire eco-
system of learning in the broadcast sense. It integrally impacts the culture of reading, book
publishing, writing, book promotion, content creation and all other related issues. In this light,
a series of programmes highlighting various aspects of NEP 2020 is scheduled to be organized
during the NDWBF 2021–Virtual Edition for all stakeholders to discuss the dynamics of its
implementation through publishing for various age-groups.

During the Fair, discussions on education and pedagogy, conversation with the authors,
scholars, book release functions, cultural programmes, etc. were organized.
Publishers’ Participation
More than 160 stalls were put up by publishers and exhibitors from India and abroad on the
Virtual exhibition platform. The Indian publishers exhibited books in different languages
including English, Bangla, Hindi, Malyalam, Punjabi, Sindhi, Kannada, Marathi, Urdu across
stalls.
Foreign Countries
Over 15 countries including China, France, Iran, Italy, Mexico, Nepal, Spain, Sri Lanka,
Ukraine, Abu Dhabi, United Kingdom, and USA participated in the Fair.
B2B Activities
New Delhi World Book Fair also has a platform for B2B activities for publishers from India
and abroad. Under this, a session called CEOSpeak: a Publishers Forum was organized in
association with FICCI on 6 March 2021 on the online platform.

1. A session on ‘Joy of Reading : Focusing on Urdu Poetry of Freedom Movement & Literary
Humour and Satire’ was organized with Shri Abhinav Chaturvedi, Shri Sayeed Alam and
Smt. Kousar Ismail as panelists. The program was moderated by Shri Danish Iqbal.
2. A panel discussion on ‘Bilingual Books for Children: Dynamics of Teaching Languages
at Primary Stage — Indian and Global Perspectives’ was chaired by Prof. Govind Prasad
Sharma, Chairman, NBT. Shri Yuvraj Malik, Smt. Neera Jain, Ms. Fatima Abbas and Mr
Lawrence Schimel were part of the esteemed panel.
3. A Poetry Recitation, Song and Couplets session with Ms Laxmi Shankar Bajpai, Ms Mamta
Kiran, Shri Mahendra Sharma and Shri Deepak Sarin as panelists was organised.
4. CEOSpeak: a Publisher’s Forum was organised by National Book Trust, India and FICCI
was organized virtually, on the topic “Challenges and Opportunities for Publishers in the
light of New Education Policy.” Prof.Govind Prasad Sharma, Chairman NBT and Shri
Yuvraj Malik, Director, NBT spoke at the event.
5. An interaction between Mr Yuvraj Malik, Director NBT and Shri Eric Falt, South Asia
Head of UNESCO was organised wherein they discussed about the New Education Policy
and status of Education in South Asia. The session was moderated by Shri Kumar Vikram
Senior Editor, NBT.
6. The Himachal Academy of Arts, Culture & Languages, Shimla hosted an event on
Contemporary Literature.
7. A session on ‘Understanding Science with Lessons from Nature’ wherein Dr. Gita
Mathur, well-known science communicator & Retd. Associate Professor, was in conversation
with Ms Kanchan Wanchoo Sharma, Editor, National Centre for Children’s Literature, NBT.

1. Shri Prempal Sharma, Dr. Usha Sharma, Ms. Geetanjali Kumar, and Ms. Mridul Singh
were part of the panel that discussed about the ‘Role of Mother Tongue: Making Reading
a Pleasurable Activity for Children’.
2. A session on National Education Policy 2020 - Indian Knowledge Tradition was organized
with Prof. Om Prakash Pandey and Dr. Sanjeev Rai, moderated by Shri Pankaj Chaturvedi,
Hindi Assistant Editor, NBT.
3. A session on Sanskrit: Hamari Bhashaon Ki Dadi Maa was organized with Dr. Ramesh
Bijlani, Dr. Baldevanand Sagar, Dr. Sampadanand Mishra as panelists and was moderated
by Shri Bhag yendra Bhai Patel, Gujarati Assistant Editor, NBT.
4. A session was organised by NBT in collaboration with All India Confederation of the
Blinds, New Delhi. Dr. J.L. Kaul, Padma Shri awardee and Secretary General, AICB spoke
on the topic ‘Role of Braille Books in Mother Tongue and Possibilities & Challenges for
the Students’. In the second part of this programme, visually impaired students recited
melodious poems on Patriotism. Other speakers included Ms. Devki, Ms Abhilasha and
Mr. Ankur, Mr. Rajnish Rajat, Mr. Anurag Pathak, Mrs. Sushila Negi, Mrs. Manjula Rath.
All participants were gifted with NBT’s Braille books.
5. A hybrid event was organized for a Book Release function of 5 new Bangla titles published by
the National Book Trust, India, namely Titas Ekti Nadir Naam by Adwaita Mallabarman,
Anandamath by Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay, Pather Dabi by Saratchandra
Chattopadhyay, Rammohun Roy Nirbachito Rachna Samgrah and Mahatma O Kabi by
Sabyasachi Bhattacharyya. Prof. Om Prakash Pandey and Dr Baldevanand Sagar released
the books. The book release was followed by an online discussion about each book by
Dr. Anathbandhu Chatterjee, Shri Abir Mukhopadhyay, Dr. Baridbaran Ghosh, Prof.
Parthasarathi Bhaumik, and Dr. Nabakumar Basu. The event was moderated by Shri
Bratin Dey, Bangla Assistant Editor, NBT.
6. A panel event on ‘Hindi Natak aur Rangmanch: Yahan Se Kahan' was held with interactive
discussions by Shri Suman Kumar, Shri Satish Anand, Shri Ravi Taneja and Smt. Mira
Kant, with Dr Lalit Kishore Mandora, Hindi Assistant Editor, NBT.
7. A special program was organized by the Himachal Academy of Arts, Culture & Languages,
Shimla on contemporary literature.

1. On the occasion of International Women’s Day, a session in Gujarati on the topic Mahila
Lekhanni Gaikaal: Aaj Aane Aavati Kaal was organized. The speakers at the event were
eminent women writers and poets of Gujarati literature, viz. Dr. Usha Upadhyay, Ms
Lakshmi Dobria, Ms. Prathana Jaha and Ms. Devika Dhruv. The program was moderated
by Shri Bhag yendra Patel, Gujarati Assistant Editor, NBT.

5. An event on ‘Promoting Indian Culture Abroad: A Dialogue Among Indian Diaspora’ was
organized by NBT. Ms. Bhavana Pradyumna, Founder President Carnatic Conservatory
of Paris and Ms. Nupur Tron, Founder Foundation Frison Horta, Belgium participated
in the dialogue. The session was moderated by Shri Kumar Vikram, Senior Editor, NBT.
6. Dr T. Ravichandran, Director of Museum of Constructive Programmes of Mahatma
Gandhi, in a talk with Shri T. Mathan Raj discussed the ‘Gandhian Vision in NEP-2020’.

As part of its initiative to promote Indian books abroad, NBT participated in the following
International Book Fairs from Financial Year 2020-21 under the Head of Promotion of
Indian Books Abroad.

Arts Promotion, Sri Lanka inaugurated the Fair. Over 150 publishers, both local and foreign
participated in the Fair and displayed their books in over 400 stalls.

displayed at NBT’s stall. Books of different genres including science & technolog y, social
science, educational books, children’s books, biography, art & culture were displayed.

During 2020-21
1. National Book Trust, India organized a book release function and launched a set of seven
titles on the "Psycho-social Impact of Pandemic and the Ways to Cope", published under
NBT’s Corona Studies series. The programme was organised through video conferencing
in New Delhi on 15 May 2020. Dr Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’, Hon’ble Minister of
Human Resource Development, released the books.
While releasing the books, Dr Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’ said, “To counter the difficult
circumstances that the world today is facing, NBT has brought out these remarkable and
unparalleled set of books.” He added that preventive mental health is an important area
that we need to focus during these times and every single effort is necessary to go ahead
and fight the pandemic as warriors.
The authors of the books including Dr. Jitendra Nagpal, eminent psychiatrist; Ms. Meena
Arora, Lt. Col. Tarun Uppal, Dr. Harsheeta, Ms. Rekha Chauhan, Ms. Sonie Sidhu and
Ms. Aprajita Dixit, also spoke on the occasion.

2. To mark the World Book & Copyright Day, National Book Trust, India in association
with FICCI organized a Post-COVID Publishing Scenario held at New Delhi on 23
April 2020.
Dr Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’, Hon’ble Minister for Human Resource Development
was the Chief Guest on the occasion. He remarked that “With its ancient universities,
ancient knowledge and treasure trove of books, India is a link between the past and the
future, a bridge between generations and across cultures.” Taking this knowledge further,
he added that we all have to strive together to make India a proud knowledge economy of
the world. Dr Nishank also emphasised on the need to promote reading in the country,
he said that children should be encouraged to believe that books are their best friends.
In his address Prof. Govind Prasad Sharma, Chairman, NBT said that the pandemic has
taken a toll on all of us and has changed the way we function, like students are being
taught over online classes. He was of the view that the publishers need to make sure that
we keep on imparting knowledge regardless of the medium.
Shri Yuvraj Malik, Director, NBT said that at present the world at large and the publishing
industry is facing several problems, and it may well take a long time to get back. He
remarked that we must accept the demand of the hour, and as publishers it is our duty
to disseminate information and knowledge to the society, it may well be through digital
and e-publishing mediums.

3. National Book Trust, India organized an online Round-Table Meet on ‘Managing
Psychosocial Pressures During Pandemic’ on 20 June 2020. During the meet, the panelists
discussed about the various aspects of corona virus, especially it’s psychosocial impact
on various segments of the society. The panelists included Dr. Jitendra Nagpal, Senior
Consultant Psychiatrist & Incharge, Institute of Mental Health & Life Skills Promotion,
Moolchand Medcity; Ms. Aprajita Dixit, Child and Adolescent Psychologist, Family

4. National Book Trust, India organised Hindi Pakhwada from 1 to 15 September 2020.
During the Pakhwada, three competitions for employees of the Trust including Hindi
general knowledge, essay writing and Hindi dictation were conducted. The employees of
the Trust, particularly from non-Hindi speaking areas, participated in these competitions
with enthusiasm.
As part of the Hindi Pakhwada celebrations, the National Book Trust, India organized a
lecture on ‘Journey of Hindi to Digital Times’ at its premises in Vasant Kunj, New Delhi
on 14 September 2020 (which was streamed online as well). The lecture was delivered
by Dr Kumud Sharma, well-known educationist and Principal, Kanya Mahavidyalaya,
Shamli, Uttar Pradesh.
5. National Book Trust, India organised a virtual session on ‘Promoting India’s Young
Voices’ on 19 September 2020. The session brought together eminent children’s writers
& illustrators and child authors on a single platform. The panelists included Ms Sudha
Murthy, Chairperson, Infosys Foundation and noted writer in English and Kannada; Ms
Deepa Agarwal, renowned children’s author; Shri Subir Roy, international award-winning
illustrator and Dr Rajesh Vyas, a prolific critic of contemporary art and culture, poet and
renowned columnist. They shared their experiences of writing children’s literature and
understanding what children today are interested in reading. The young authors aged 7

to 15 including Ayan Gogoi, Dhruvaditya Tiwari, Ayaan Kapadia, Akshat Gupta, and
Yashi Tripathi talked about their inspiration behind writing at such a young age, and
their future goals. Shri Yuvraj Malik, Director, NBT spoke about NBT’s initiatives to
make children book-minded and provide assistance to young authors. The event was
moderated by Ms Kanchan Wanchoo Sharma, editor (NCCL).
6. National Book Trust, India organised a workshop on ‘How to Use Standard Hindi in
Official Work’ (Sarkari Karya Mein Manak Hindi Vartani Ka Prayog ) at NBT Conference
Hall, Vasant Kunj, New Delhi on 8 October 2020. Dr Kumud Sharma, well-known
educationist and Principal, Kanya Mahavidyalaya, Shamli, Uttar Pradesh conducted the
workshop, where she highlighted several common errors that usually creep in the usage
of Hindi.
7. As part of National Unity Day celebrations, National Book Trust, India organized an
online lecture on 30 October 2020. Shri Yogender Chaudhary, Principal Secretary to
Government, Haryana (Sports & Youth Affairs Dept.) & Advisor, Resource Mobilization
Cell (CM Office, Haryana) was chief guest on the occasion and delivered the lecture on
‘Dimensions of National Unity in Cultural Diversity’. Shri Chaudhary spoke about his
experiences with people from different parts of the country. He observed that despite
vast differences in traditions, cuisine, attires and languages, the sense of belongingness
among people remains. Shri Yuvraj Malik, Director, NBT said that all Indians should
learn from the life and struggle of great people of India like Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and
believe in unity as the path for our country’s real success.
8. To mark the 158th birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda, which is also celebrated
as National Youth Day, the Trust organised an online lecture on 12 January 2021.
Swami Kirtipradananda, Registrar, Ramakrishna Mission Vivekananda Educational and
Research Institute delivered a lecture on the ‘Life and Message of Swami Vivekananda
and the Relevance of his Message to the Contemporary World’. Prof. Govind Prasad
Sharma, Chairman, NBT spoke about how the assimilation and propagation of Swami
Vivekananda’s life and his works is the need of the hour. Shri Yuvraj Malik, Director,
NBT shared his views on Swami Vivekananda as the personification of the Indian
knowledge tradition.
9. A dialogue on the ‘New Education Policy 2020–NEP Outreach’, was organised by the
Nehru Centre, London in collaboration with National Book Trust, India (under the
Ministry of Education) as the nodal agency, on 18 January 2021. Speaking on the occasion,
Shri Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’, Hon’ble Minister of Education, Govt. of India said
that under the leadership of our Hon’ble Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, the NEP-
2020 has been implemented with a futuristic mindset, there by turning the challenges into
opportunities. It will equip India to hold a position in the global knowledge system. The
other speakers on the occasion were: Shri Vinay Sahastrabuddhe, President, ICCR and
Rt. Hon. Jo Johnson, Educationist, Former Minister of State for Universities, Science,
Research & Innovation, United Kingdom. The session was moderated by Shri Amish
Tripathi, Minister (Culture), High Commission of India, UK and Director, The Nehru
Centre.

10. National Book Trust, India participated at the Amritsar Sahit Utsav organsied by Khalsa
College, Amritsar from 2 to 5 March 2021. Shri Yuvraj Malik, Director, NBT was the
special guest at the inauguration of the festival. Dr Surjit Patar, well-known author was the
chief guest on the occasion. During the festival, the Trust organised several programmes
including panel discussions on: Life and Works of Guru Teg Bahadur; NEP 2020 and
Importance of Regional Languages; and Guru Teg Bahadur: In the Eyes of Historians.
Noted scholars, authors and academicians, including Dr Amarjeet Singh Grewal, Dr S P
Singh, Dr Ramandeep Kaur, Dr Amanpreet Singh, Prof. Kanwaljeet Singh, Dr Ramendra
Kaur, Dr Jaspal Kaur Kang, Prof. Yograj Angreesh and Dr Jagjeevan Singh participated
in these programmes.
11. Hon’ble Prime Minister, Shri Narendar Modi flagged off a symbolic Salt March to
commemorate 91st anniversary of Gandhi’s Dandi March on 12 March 2021. The
occasion also saw the launch of the year-long celebration of 75 years of Independence—
Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav.
As a part of the launch of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav, National Book Trust, India
organised a programme on the contributions of unknown freedom fighters on 12 March
2021. Speaking on the occasion, Shri Yuvraj Malik, Director, NBT said that as part of
the 75 years of Independence celebrations, NBT will be bringing out books on the many
unknown men and women who fought for India’s independence. These books will
become a part of our collective history. It will be Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav, a major
contribution from NBT towards India@75 programme.

16. National Book Trust, India was the Knowledge Partner at an event on ‘Mahatma
Gandhi’s Experiments with Swachchata – Key to Prosperity’. The event was organised
by Kendriya Bhandar and Centre for Strateg y and Leadership at Plenary Hall, Vig yan
Bhawan, New Delhi on 2 October 2020. Dr Jitendra Singh, Hon’ble Union Minister
of State for Development of North Eastern Region and Minister of State for Prime
Minister’s Office inaugurated the event. Shri Yuvraj Malik, Director, NBT also spoke
on the occasion. He talked about Mahatma Gandhi’s philosophy on Cleanliness and
Swachchata. He also shared the many initiatives of National Book Trust, India, and
the steps taken in following Mahatma Gandhi’s thoughts and philosophies; in addition
to publishing books on and by Gandhiji. The other speakers at the event included
Ms Parmeshwari Bagri, Chairperson, Kendriya Bhandar; Shri Mukesh Kumar, Managing
Director, Kendriya Bhandar; Shri Mayank Agarwal, Director General, Doordarshan;
and Shri Vikas Sharma, Director & CEO, CSL. An exhibit of NBT books on and by
Gandhi was also on display at the Vig yan Bhawan for the benefit of the visitors.
17. National Book Trust, India was the Knowledge Partner at the ASMA Education
Leadership Conclave on – ‘The Impact of NEP on Early Childhood Education’ held on
22 October 2020. Delivering the keynote address, Shri Yuvraj Malik, Director, NBT,
said, “NEP is a vision document which will become a roadmap for future generations.
The gap is between where we are and where we have to go; and to bridge this gap we
need an implementation strateg y.” Two panel discussions involving experts of pre-school
education sector. The discussions focused on ‘Planning & Implementation of NEP in
Early Childhood Education’ and ‘Virtual Learning Methods for Sustained Engagement:
The Challenges and Best Practices’.

18. National Book Trust, India was the Knowledge Partner at the month-long 9th
International Adolescent Summit, 2020: Life Skills, Health, Safety & School Well-being,
which concluded on 12 January 2021. The Summit was organized virtually by Expressions
India. Dr Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank,’ Hon’ble Minister of Education inaugurated the
event. Various events such as poster-paintings, Indian classical dance, Nukkad Natak
and making short films along with Yuva Sansad were organized during the Summit. Shri
Rajat Sharma, Chairman & Editor-in Chief, INDIA TV News, was the Guest of Honour
at the concluding session. Shri Yuvraj Malik, Director, NBT also spoke on the occasion.
He talked about adolescents as future leaders and future of the nation.
19. National Book Trust, India was honoured with Lifetime Achievement Award for
promoting culture of reading in the country at the India Reading Olympiad on 23 January
2021. The award was given by Food4Thought Foundation. Prof. Govind Prasad Sharma,
Chairman, NBT and Shri Yuvraj Malik, Director, NBT received the award during the
virtual award ceremony.

Recognizing the efforts taken by various individuals and other institutions that were
nominated for the awards in promoting books and reading habits at the community
level, Shri Yuvraj Malik announced a donation of NBT books worth Rs 5,000 as reward
to each nominee. Based in Hyderabad, Food4Thought Foundation works extensively
towards encouraging the habit of reading. The Foundation has opened several libraries
and conducts various programmes including the annual India Reading Olympiad.
20. National Book Trust, India was the Knowledge Partner for the Education Leaders’
Summit organized on 20 March 2021 by Manav Rachna Educational Institutions and
ASSOCHAM. The Summit brought together the principals from schools of Delhi NCR,
policymakers, and institution heads for unlocking the transformation of India’s education
sector. They discussed strategies and best practices to catalyse India’s transformation
into one of the top 10 innovation-led countries of the world. Speakers on the occasion
were: Shri Anurag Tripathi, Secretary, CBSE; Padma Shri Dr V S Chauhan, Executive
Chairman, NAAC; Dr Prashant Bhalla, Chairman, ASSOCHAM National Council on
Education and President, Manav Rachna Educational Institutions among others. All the
speakers at the summit were felicitated with books by NBT.
21. National Book Trust, India was the Knowledge Partner at the 14th National Education
Summit 2021 organized by ASSOCHAM from 18 to 20 February 2021. The 3-day
Summit discussed the impact of the National Education Policy 2020 on transforming the
educational landscape of the nation and carving a road map for its implementation.

about the five deliverables of the NEP 2020 that will help turn it from a vision document

Celebrations
“NBT has played a major role in the growth of Indian publishing industry,” said Shri Prabhat
Kumar, distinguished publisher and member of Board of Trustees, NBT, while delivering the
ninth NBT Foundation Day Lecture on ‘Books and Reading in Today’s India.’ Organised
virtually, the lecture marked NBT’s 64th Foundation Day on 1 August 2020.
Shri Prabhat Kumar said that NBT has been publishing quality content for readers of all
age-groups and in different Indian languages, which other publishers would not publish as
such books are commercially not viable. He also appreciated NBT’s initiative in bringing out
books on psychosocial impact of Covid-19 on different segments of the society.
Talking of the various activities of NBT, Shri Prabhat Kumar said that through its emphasis
on reaching books to readers across the country in remote areas, NBT organises book fairs,
book exhibitions, literary programmes and mobile exhibitions. He further added that NBT
has the resources to bring together the literature of all States and the expertise to publish our
glorious history.
In his address, Prof. Govind Prasad Sharma, Chairman, NBT said that NBT was established
in 1957 as an institution solely for the promotion of books among common people and to
encourage them to read. He further said that NBT is publishing books not only in major
Indian languages but also in various minor languages as well as dialects. He added that NBT
also publishes books in Braille, and books for other special needs readers. He also congratulated
the employees of the Trust for its successful journey.
Speaking of the role of NBT in the publishing industry, Shri Yuvraj Mailk, Director, NBT
said, “National Book Trust, India is not just a premier national institution, rather our mandate
makes our reach possible to the international forums where we are able to showcase and
represent the Indian publishing industry and its achievements.” He also said that book fairs
organised by NBT, especially the annual New Delhi World Book Fair provides a common
platform to authors, readers and publishers from India and abroad to interact with each other.
Shri Yuvraj Malik said that “During the global corona pandemic, we continued to remain
engaged with our readers and come up with programmes and initiatives that represent our
commitment to promote book-mindedness and the culture of reading in the country.” Shri
Malik remarked that NBT’s major focus is on mentoring children as future authors, illustrators
and editors and to create a better ambience of reading in the society and the values attached
to it.

This annual lecture series was initiated in the year 2013. The lecture series aims to bring
about the importance of books and reading in today’s context and bring in critical thinking
by inviting eminent personalities from among women and men of letters, scholars and
intellectuals who have made significant contributions to the world of publishing. The earlier
lectures were delivered by Dr Shashi Tharoor, Prof. Andre Beteille, Ms Shashi Deshpande,
Prof. Kapil Kapoor, Dr N K Singh, Prof. Makarand Paranjape, Dr K Sreenivasarao and Shri
B K Sharma.

Addressing a large gathering at the valedictory function of the workshop, Prof. Govind Prasad
Sharma, Chairman, NBT, spoke of the role of children’s literature in the society. He said,
“Children’s literature is the backbone of all civilizations and hence, should be given paramount
importance.” He further talked about the importance of India’s rich cultural heritage, its
reflection on literature and how it is needed to get in touch with one’s roots. He was hopeful
that the workshop would help in creating content enriched with the region’s culture and
ethos.
Well-known authors and illustrators including Arjun Rai ‘Yava’, Pravin Rai ‘Jumeli’, Dr
Kavita Lama, Meena Subba, Tulshi Ghimirey, Anathbandhu Chatterjee, Dipanwita Roy, Dr

1. Online Storytelling Sessions (on Facebook) were organised with Children’s Writers
associated with the Readers’ Club Bulletin from 16 April to 08 May 2020. Twenty leading
children’s authors including Kshama Sharma, Rumi Malik, Divik Ramesh, Deepa
Agarwal, Mukesh Nautiyal, Monika Aggarwal, Sangeeta Sethi presented their stories.
2. An Online Storytelling session was organised on the occasion of World Book and
Copyright Day (23 April, 2020). Sh. Ramendra Kumar narrated a story from Readers’
Club Bulletin titled 'Google Express' in the session.
3. A story from the Readers’ Club Bulletin was narrated and broadcast on 92.7 Big FM,
Ajmer in June 2020 in the programme 'Big Story Board' by RJ Ajay.
4. The 11 th National Children’s Literature Webinar was held in collaboration with Salila
Sanstha, Jaipur from 10–11 October 2020. Five sessions on Storytelling & Poetry
were conducted in which 25 distinguished children’s writers and editors of children’s
magazines including Govind Sharma, Murlidhar Vashnav, Prakash Tated, Sajid Khan,
Divik Ramesh, Sanjiv Jaiswal, among others.
5. A Webinar on Children’s Book Publishing was organised on 8 th December 2020. Sessions
on 'Designing Layout & Pricing of Children’s Books' were held with eminent experts
in the field of children’s book publishing, Tanishka Kachru, Atanu Roy, Manisha
Choudhary and Pranav Kumar Singh.
6. A talk on 'Understanding Science with Lessons from Nature' was held with Dr. Gita
Mathur (Popular Science Communicator and Blogger) on 6 March 2021 during the New
Delhi Work Book Fair 2021- Virtual Edition.

Orientation Programmes
7. A virtual Orientation Programme on Readers’ Club Movement was organised by
NCCL with the State Resource Group and schools of UT Chandigarh covered under
Samagra Shiksha on 9 February, 2021. Dr. Manjit Kaur, Mission coordinator and Ms.
Komal Sharma, Pedagog y Coordinator were present on behalf of Samagra Shiksha, UT
Chandigarh. This event was also telecast live on YouTube to make it available to a large
audience.
8. An Orientation Programme on Readers’ Club Movement was organised by NCCL
under Samagra Shiksha, at SCERT, Lucknow on 18 March, 2021. The event was attended
by the SRG officials, more than 1400 teachers of Uttar Pradesh and other participants
through online mode. Dr. Anita Bhatnagar Jain, ias, Retd. Additional Chief Secretary,
Higher Education Department, U.P and a popular children’s author interacted with the
participants.
Publications
9. Three issues of the quarterly bilingual magazine for children, Readers’ Club Bulletin, i.e.
May, August and November issues were published in e-format.
10. Articles written exclusively by children have been published in November issue of the
Bulletin as a children’s special edition to encourage budding child authors of the country.
NCCL Library
11. Twelve new members were enrolled for the membership of the NCCL Library during
the year 2020-21. NCCL library has a total of 318 members till date.
Readers’ Clubs
12. A total of 47318 new Readers’ Clubs were established in Andhra Pradesh, Chandigarh,
Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand. An approximate of 1.29 lakh Readers’ Clubs have been
established so far.

Sales & Marketing
Outreach
The Sales & Marketing team of National Book Trust, India facilitates distribution of NBT
publication among readers in India as well as abroad occasionally. In order to expand its
outreach, NBT takes help of trade partners, organizes and participates at various book
exhibitions and plans Pustak Parikrama in the rural and far-flung areas.
Regional Offices
National Book Trust, India has four regional offices located in Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai and
Chennai, managing its sales operations independently. These regional offices stock and sell
NBT publications in the languages of the region including tribal dialects, etc. These offices
also organize mobile exhibitions, participate at prominent book fairs in the region and
organize several events for the promotion of books and reading habit as per the mandate of
the Trust. These regional offices also act as the nodal points for the various government and
non-government agencies for organizing activities related to promotion of books and reading
culture.
Bookstores
NBT books are available at neighborhood bookstores through its trade partners in all major
cities of the country. NBT also operates its own outlets/ bookstores in major cities like Delhi,
Kolkata, Bengaluru, Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kochi, Cuttack, Guwahati, Agartala and
Patna. All these bookstores are centrally located and easily approachable, offering a range of
titles in the regional languages, tribal languages as well as in Hindi and English.
NBT also operates bookstores at two metro stations of Delhi namely, Vishwavidyalaya Metro
Station, which is easily approachable by Delhi University students and teachers, and the
Kashmiri Gate Metro Station, easily approachable by metro commuters and the travellers at
the Inter State Bus Terminal.

Online Store
For the convenience of buyers, NBT books are also available online at its webstore
www.nbtindia.gov.in and also on Amazon.in. During the financial year 2020-21, 71 new titles
were added, making it one of the largest webstores having 3113 titles in Indian languages and
dialects like Asamiya, Bangla, Bhojpuri, Gondi, Halbi, Gujarati, Kannada, Konkani, Marathi,
Maithili, Malayalam, Odia, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu, Tibetan and Urdu, Hindi and English
among others. During this financial year, a record sale of 11 lakh has been generated from
the NBT portal. During the Financial year 2020-21, NBT generated a gross sale of 84,405
through online sale of Books on Amazon.
Trade Partners
The Trust has developed an excellent network of authorized booksellers as agents and
distributors throughout the country. During the year, it has added 45 new authorized
booksellers, expanding its network of authorized book sellers to 27 states and 5 Union
Territories.

Participation in Exhibitions
In its constant efforts to reach to the grassroots level, NBT participates in major Book Fairs
through its Regional offices (RO) and Book Promotion Centers (BPCs). However, to cover
the remaining regions, the Regional Offices and Book Promotion Centers of NBT organize
book fairs in these regions for the benefit of the readers. The Sales outlets of BPCs and ROs
also organize school-level book fairs. In the Financial year 2020-21, the Trust participated in
16 such exhibitions through its Regional Offices and Book Promotion Centers.

Financial Assistance Programme
(NBT FAP)
In order to promote and pursue translations of Indian books into foreign languages, the Trust
initiated a financial assistance programme to foreign publishers. The programme will provide
suitable incentive in the form of financial assistance to foreign publishers for translation of
original Indian writings published by Indian publishers in English, Hindi and other Indian
languages into foreign languages.
The programme covers broad categories of fiction, non-fiction, science and technolog y and
books for children, except dictionaries, magazines, journals, textbooks for schools/colleges
and professional courses like medicine, engineering, pure & applied sciences and business
administration.
In order to give particular focus on writings in Indian languages where an English translation
is not available, and to promote such writings abroad, NBT would facilitate its translation
into English, and in such areas NBT would bear 50% of the translation fee. Open to foreign
publishers, the programme has elicited a lot of interest among a cross-section of publishers
both from India and abroad.
So far, financial assistance has been extended for: The Missing Queen by Samhita Arni (originally
published by Zubaan) published by Lit Edizioni SRL in Italian; My Little India by Manoj Das
(originally published by NBT, India) published by Booksea Publishing in Korean; Looking
Back: India in 20 th Century (originally published by NBT, India) published by Booksea
Publishing in Korean and Stories by Ambai by Ambai (originally published by Kalachuvadu)
published by Editions Zulma in French.

TRAINING COURSE IN BOOK
PUBLISHING
National Book Trust, India has been organising Training Course in Book Publishing since
1994 across the country to help participants take up publishing as a career. The Training
Course focuses on various aspects of publishing like developing manuscripts, editorial process,
production and marketing of books, export of books, Copyright and other legal issues of
publishing, sale of Rights, etc. Members of the faculty drawn from leading universities,
institutions and publishing houses give an insight into publishing industry to the participants
through interactive sessions in class room situation.
During the financial Year 2020-21, three Online Courses in Book Publishing of 3-month
duration each were organised by the Trust.
National Book Trust is committed to the mandate of skill development which was introduced
by our Hon’ble Prime Minister of India, among the masses and through this course the Trust
is trying to include a larger population in its programme. These online courses have benefited
people in many ways as they could learn the skills in the comfort of their homes without any
travel.
Second Online Book Publishing Course (26th September- 20th December, 2020)
The second batch of Online Book Publishing Course was organised from 26 September-20
December 2020. Eighty participants registered for this batch. Participants from different

states like Kerala, Maharashtra, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh (Mathura, Ghaziabad, Noida, Meerut,
Bulandshaher) Delhi, Assam, Bangalore, Jammu, Jharkhand, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Ahmadabad,
Telangana, Haryana, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and more enthusiastically participated and
learned about the different steps and processes involved in book publication.
Exceptional members of society including Sh. Yuvraj Malik, Director NBT, Sh. G.S. Jolly, Sh.
Sridhan Balan, Sh. Prabhat Kumar, Sh. Vivek Mehra, Sh. Manish Arora, Mr. Pranav Singh,
Sh. B.D. Mendiratta, Sh. Himanshu Giri formed the faculty for this batch of the Online Book
Publishing Course. The Course was coordinated by Shri Narender Kumar, Training Incharge,
NBT.

Books
Financial assistance is provided by the Trust under its Subsidy Scheme for publication of
books.

Grant-in-Aid
This is a Grant-in-Aid (GIA) Scheme for Book Promotional Activities wherein, financial
assistance is provided to the registered NGOs for one or more of the following purposes:
(a) To organise Book Fairs/Seminars of Indian Authors/Publishers/Booksellers on subjects
which have direct bearing on book promotion in India.
(b) To organise training courses on a subject directly related to book promotion.
(c) To organise Annual Conventions/Conferences of Writers/Publishers/Printers/
Booksellers.
(d) To conduct research/survey connected with the book industry.
(e) Any other activity which may be found conducive to the development of book industry,
etc.
The scheme is under revision, therefore, assistance to NGO could not be released during the
financial year 2020-21.

2. REVENUE RECOGNITION:
2.1 Interest on Savings Bank Account is accounted on cash basis.
2.2 Income from Land, Building and other property and Interest on Investments are
accounted on accrual basis.
2.3 Interest on Interest Bearing Advances to staff for House Building, Purchase of Vehicles
and Computers is accounted on accrual basis every year, though the actual recovery of
interest starts after the full repayment of the Principal.
2.4 Revenue from sale of books is recognized only when the books have been dispatched
from NBT Godowns and the purchaser has become legally liable to pay.

4. Intangible Assets:
Patents and copyrights, E-Journals and Computer Software are grouped under Intangible
Assets:
4.1 Electronic Journals (E-Journals) are separated from Library Books in view of the limited
benefit that could be derived from the on-line access provided. E-journals are not in a
tangible form, but temporarily capitalized and in view of the magnitude of expenditure
and the benefit derived in terms of perpetual knowledge acquired by the Academic and

5. STOCKS:
Expenditure on purchase of chemicals, glassware, publications and other stores is accounted
as revenue expenditure, except that the value of closing stocks held on 31 st March is set up as
inventories by reducing the corresponding Revenue Expenditure on the basis of information
obtained from Departments. They are valued at cost.
6. RETIREMENT BENEFITS:
Retirement Benefits i.e. Pension, Gratuity and Leave Encashment are provided on the basis of
current value of Actuarial Valuation. Capitalized Value of Pension and Gratuity received from
previous employers of the Institution’s employees, who have been absorbed in the Institution,
is credited to the respective Provision Accounts. Pension contribution received in respect of
employees on deputation is also credited to the Provision for Pension Account. The Actual
payments of Pension, Gratuity and Leave Encashment are debited in the Accounts to the
respective provisions. Other Retirement Benefits viz. Deposit Linked Insurance, Contribution
to New Pension Scheme, Medical Reimbursement to retired employees and Travel to Home
Town on retirement are accounted on accrual basis (actual payments plus outstanding bills at
the end of the year).
7. INVESTMENTS:
7.1 Long term Investments are carried at their cost or face value whichever is lower. However,
any permanent diminution in their value as on the date of the Balance Sheet is provided
for.
7.2 Short term Investments are carried at their cost or market value (if quoted) whichever is
lower.
8. EARMARKED/ENDOWMENT FUNDS:
The balance in the respective funds is carried forward and is represented on the Assets side by
the Balance at Bank, Investments and Accrued Interest.
9. CORPUS FUND
Was established in the year 2009-10. Income from investments of the fund is added to the
Fund. The Corpus Fund may be utilized for Revenue expenditure. The balance in the Corpus
Fund which is carried forward is represented by Investment in Fixed Deposits with the Bank
and Accrued Interest on Investments.

1. CONTINGENT LIABILITIES:
1.1 As on 31.3.2021, 11 Court Cases filed against the Institution by former/present
employees, tenants and contractors and arbitration cases with contractors, were pending
for decisions. The suits filed by employees were establishment related viz. promotions,
increments, pay scales, termination etc. the quantum of the claims is not ascertainable.
The claim in the suits and arbitration cases by contractors amounted to Rs.0 lac (Previous
Year Rs.0 lac).
1.2 Letters of Credit established by the Bank on behalf of the Institution and outstanding on
31.3.2021 – Rs.0 (Previous Year Rs.0).
1.3 Disputed demands in respect of Sales Tax Re.0 (Previous Year Re.0). Municipal Taxes
Rs.0 (Previous Year Re.0).
2. CAPITAL COMMITMENTS:
The value of contracts remaining to be executed on Capital Account and not provided for (Net
of Advances) amounted to Rs. 60,95,187.00 as on 31.3.2021 (Previous Year Rs.60,95,187.00).
3. FIXED ASSETS:
3.1 Additions in the year to Fixed Assets in Schedule 4 include Assets purchased out of Non-
NER funds (Rs. 32,18,494 (Rs.94,350 from Capital Expenditure and 31,24,144.00 made
from IRG) NER funds Rs.0.00, A.D. Fund (Rs.NIL), Sponsored Projects (Rs.NIL) and
Library Books of the value of Rs.0.00 gifted to the Institution. The Assets have been set
up by credit to Capital Fund.
4. DEPOSIT LIABILITIES:
4.1 The amount outstanding as Earnest Money Deposit & Security Deposits of Rs.NIL
towards unclaimed deposits, prior to the Financial Year 2014-15 was transferred to
