Title of the Short Story:

“The last leaf”

Setting:

1. Johnsy - a young artist who falls ill and loses hope.

Characters: 2. Sue - Johnsy's friend and roommate, also an artist.
3. Mr. Behrman - an old artist who lives in the same building.

PLOT

Exposition : Johnsy and Sue are two young artists living together in Greenwich Village,
New York City. Johnsy falls ill with pneumonia, and she believes that she will
die when the last leaf on the vine outside their window falls.

Rising Action: Johnsy becomes obsessed with the falling leaves and is convinced that she will
die when the last one falls. Sue is worried and tries to convince her otherwise
but to no avail. Sue tells their neighbor, Mr. Behrman, about Johnsy’s
condition and her strange belief.

Climax: On a stormy night, the last leaf does not fall. The next morning, Johnsy sees
the leaf still hanging on the vine, and this gives her the will to fight her illness
and live.

Falling Action: Johnsy recovers from her illness. Sue finds out that Mr. Behrman died of
pneumonia. He was found in the cold, with a palette and paintbrushes.

Resolution : It is revealed that Mr. Behrman, who had never been able to create his
masterpiece, painted the last leaf on the vine. His final act was his masterpiece,
which gave Johnsy the hope to live.
