Services, Specifications
and Classification of
Engineering Services

GROUP 3
What is Civil Engineering
services?

Civil engineering services is a vast domain that extend to the

planning, design, and construction of infrastructure such as
commercial and residential buildings; transportation
infrastructure, including roads, bridges, railways; water
distribution systems, such as dams, sewers, sewage
treatment; environmental infrastructure, such as landscaping,
urban planning, parks; industrial infrastructure construction
management; construction technology, and more.
Civil Engineering Services

Civil engineers may also serve as construction managers or

program managers and may employ other subconsultants and
subcontractors as part of their services.
Many Civil Engineers and civil engineering firms specialize in
specific areas of engineering, such as: structural and foundation,
geotechnical and environmental, water resources and hydraulics,
transportation, and construction management and engineering.
Civil Engineering Services

Professional Civil Engineering firms draw upon the combined

various disciplines such as economists, planners, designers
estimators, architects, scientists, surveyors and others. The
expertise of practitioners and specialist in other fields, particularly
as the use of computers and computer-aided design and drafting
increases, is still utilized. Likewise, civil engineers are employed by
these practitioners to assist them in the performance of their
respective services.
What is Civil Engineering
services?

Civil Engineers and civil engineering firms, whether they serve

public or private employers (clients) can provide a variety of
important services.

communities by designing and implementing projects that enhance livability,
accessibility, and sustainability. This includes urban planning, housing
developments, parks, and recreational facilities that improve the overall well-
being of residents.
Importance of Civil Engineering Services

Environmental Protection: Civil engineers play a critical role in addressing

environmental challenges by developing sustainable infrastructure solutions that
minimize ecological impact and promote resource conservation. They design
wastewater treatment systems, stormwater management facilities, and green
infrastructure to protect water quality and natural habitats.
Disaster Mitigation and Resilience: Civil engineers help communities prepare for
and respond to natural disasters such as floods, earthquakes, hurricanes, and
wildfires. They design resilient infrastructure and implement risk mitigation
measures to reduce the impact of disasters and ensure the safety and resilience
of built assets.
Importance of Civil Engineering Services

Transportation Efficiency: Transportation infrastructure designed by civil engineers

facilitates the movement of people and goods, supporting economic development
and improving connectivity within and between communities. Efficient
transportation networks reduce congestion, enhance mobility, and promote
economic productivity.
Public Safety: Civil engineers prioritize safety in the design and construction of
infrastructure projects, ensuring that structures and systems meet rigorous safety
standards and regulatory requirements. This includes assessing risks, implementing
safety measures, and conducting inspections to maintain the integrity of
infrastructure assets.
Importance of Civil Engineering Services

Economic Growth and Competitiveness: Civil engineering projects stimulate

economic growth and competitiveness by creating jobs, attracting investment, and
supporting industry sectors such as construction, manufacturing, and
transportation. Infrastructure investments drive productivity gains and improve the
overall quality of life, contributing to long-term prosperity.
Innovation and Technological Advancement: Civil engineering is a dynamic field that
continually evolves with advancements in technology, materials, and construction
techniques. Civil engineers embrace innovation to design and deliver sustainable,
cost-effective solutions that meet the complex challenges of the modern world.
SPECIFICATION OF
CIVIL ENGINEERING

WHAT IS SPECIFICATION IN ENGINEERING SERVICES?

In Civil Engineering, Specifications in engineering

services refer to detailed guidelines and requirements
for the design, construction, materials, operation, and
maintenance of civil engineering projects of work
done prepared by an Architect and an Engineer. These
specifications cover various aspects of the project,
including materials, dimensions, methods, standards,
and quality control measures.
SPECIFICATION IN ENGINEERING SERVICES

1. Material Specifications

to be used in construction, such as
concrete, steel, asphalt, aggregates,
pipes, and other components. This
includes specifications for material
properties, grades, sizes, sources, and
testing procedures.
SPECIFICATION IN ENGINEERING SERVICES

2. Construction Methods and Standards

- Specifications for construction

methods, techniques, and standards to
be followed during the execution of the
project. This includes specifications for
excavation, foundation construction,
structural framing, concrete placement,
pavement laying, and other construction
activities.
SPECIFICATION IN ENGINEERING SERVICES

3. Geotechnical Specifications

- Specifications related to soil and

foundation engineering, including soil
testing requirements, bearing capacity
criteria, foundation types, and design
parameters for retaining structures,
slopes, embankments, and earthworks.
SPECIFICATION IN ENGINEERING SERVICES

4. Structural Specifications

- Specifications for the design, analysis,

and construction of structural elements
such as buildings, bridges, dams, tunnels,
and other infrastructure. This includes
specifications for structural materials,
loadings, design criteria, safety factors,
and construction tolerances.
