 2.7 analyze nationalism and ultranationalism during times of conflict (causes of the First and
Second World Wars, examples of nationalism and ultranationalism from the First and Second
World Wars, ultranationalism in Japan, internments in Canada, conscription crises) (PADM,
TCC, GC, LPP)
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
At the end of the lesson students will be able to explain the main reasons why WWI started with
relation to nationalism

MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT


 Powerpoint(s)
 Adopt a nation print outs

PREPARATION AND LOGISTICAL CONSIDERATIONS


 Have the adopt a nation flags printed out and ready to go before class.
 Have little slips of paper ready for them to write their thingy on.

PROCEDURE
Introduction Time
 Introduce myself yay! Ask them how their day is going

Body Time
Topic Intro to me 1) Go through the slides about myself, take it slow this time
they want to know you just as much as you want to know
them.
2) Hand out blank sheets of paper, throughout class if they

think of something to writ they can. Their name, one thing
I should know about them as a teacher AND one cool
thing about themselves.

Topic Adopt a 1) Start adopt a nation, have them choose a teammate at


Nation their table, they will be teammates the entire time.
2) Go over the power point, all the rules are in there, start off

this section with any points they want to give or take
away, not too long.

Topic WWI Intro 1) Go through the slides on WWI, the first half is mostly 30-40 min
and Play information while the second half is the play.
2) For the play have them all stand up and choose a role,
based on the role they chose they will go to either the right
or the left side of the class (my right and left), on the left
will be act 1 and right will be act 2, make sure students

know that there will be some accents involved and being
silly is encouraged.
3) The first act is easy, the second might be a bit complicated
but just make sur everyone is where they need to be and
doesn’t move too much. Everyone should be ordered in
the way they are in Europe, a little map of people as
countries.
4) Make sure to finish with some time left

Conclusion Time
 Thank everyone and pack up.
 Remind them to hand in their pieces of paper if they haven’t already and not to
forget about adopt a nation.

 On their way out have them line up and don’t let them leave until they can tell
me what a letter from mania means

Assessment
 Make sure they know mania, ask them on the way out what a letter of mania means
