Title/Focus

PROGRAM OF STUDY OUTCOMES


 Language Arts

 GLO 1: Students will listen, speak, read, write, view and represent to explore thoughts, ideas,
feelings and experiences.

o SLO 1.1: Express ideas and develop understanding- read, write, represent and talk to explore
personal understandings of new ideas and information

o SLO: 1.2: Combine ideas- use talk, notes, personal writing and representing to explore
relationships among own ideas and experiences, those of others and those encountered in
oral, print and other media texts

 GLO 2: Students will listen, speak, read, write, view and represent to comprehend and respond
personally and critically to oral, print and other media texts.

o SLO 2.2: Construct meaning from text- describe and discuss the influence of setting on the
characters and events

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
At the end of the lesson students will be able to:
1. Read, discuss, and describe a story in a group
2. Construct a story about an elf on their own, using examples discussed in class and in partners

4. Dramatize a reader’s theater in a group, with creativity and confidence
MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT
 Writing prompt
 Name tags
 The Elves and the Shoemaker
 Reader’s theater story (2 versions)
 Math rounding sheet

PREPARATION AND LOGISTICAL CONSIDERATIONS


 Have all elf sheets in elf day bag
 Have four books for students
 Name tags and markers for students
PROCEDURE
Introduction Time
 Elf Name Creator
o Bring it up on the projector for all students to see
o Every student to have a name card handed out by helpers

o Find the first letter and last letter of their name to create their Elf name
o Write on name tag and decorate briefly to add to their desk
o Can be placed on top of original name tags
Body Time
Read Aloud 1) Students will be split into four groups (see below) to
read the book together and take turns reading each
page, paying attention to detail
2) Students will go back to their seats and handout
helpers will hand out story map to all students
3) We will discuss the characters, setting, events, problem
40 min
and resolution
a. Example and master will be provided for
teacher to follow
4) After discussion, students will individually fill out the
story map

Reader’s Theater 1) Two versions of the story will be available, groups 1 an


2 will have version 1, with the same groups from the
read aloud
2) Students will assign their own parts once they are in
their groups
3) They will have 20 minutes to practice their parts and 45 min
get familiar with the story before performing in front
of the class (creativity is encouraged)
4) It is expected that when students are performing, we
are quiet and respect every group

Writing Prompt 1) As a class, we will discuss examples from the read 40 min
aloud and the reader’s theater
2) Ideas can be written on the board

3) Students will also have table talk and discuss what they
think elves do
4) After ideas have been discussed, read the writing
prompt as an example for students to listen to and see
5) Two writing prompt formats- students with
differentiation will have a different sheet
6) Students on their own will write about If I Were an Elf,
and include their elf name at the bottom
7) We will then share our stories with a partner once
finished

Math 1) Each student will receive rounding math sheet


2) We will go over a question from each section as a class
for an example

3) Students will complete each sheet on their own
a. We have already reviewed rounding in class so
students should know how to do so
Conclusion Time
 Students will place every Elf sheet we covered into their Christmas duo-
tang, name should be on each sheet
Assessment
 At the end of the Christmas unit, students will all hand in their duo-tangs
