University Consultant Comments:

Danielle Fritzke completed her PS 3 internship at Magrath High Schoo in Magrath, Alberta. While there, she
taught Junior High Physical Education, as well as Grade 7 Social Studies. Danielle started her PS 2
practicum at this school in March, and was very excited at the opportunity to come back to this school to
complete her practicums. Danielle felt the staff was always welcoming and supportive, and she felt very much
at home here. In this atmosphere, Danielle was able to grow and thrive as a young educator.

Danielle became more adept at planning through this internship. She understood the program of studies in
physical education, and was able to to translate outcomes into appropriate and engaging lessons. Teaching
Social Studies was a new experience for Danielle, and she realized the importance of becoming very familiar
with the entire curriculum, including the front matter, in order to be able to design her lessons. Danielle
focused her professional growth on this goal.
Danielle demonstrated a high level of subject matter competence in her teaching, particularly in physical
education. She has competed at the collegiate level in two sports, and could demonstrate mastery in a wide
range of skills. Danielle felt very comfortable in her teaching space, and organized and directed learning for
individuals, small groups and whole classes. She had an innate ability to supervise a gym full of students,
circulating continually to offer feedback and check for understanding. Danielle worked at improving her
questioning techniques, to promote student to student discussions as well as teacher to student. Planning
effective closures for all lessons was another goal she worked to achieve.
Danielle displayed excellent classroom leadership. She treated all students respectfully, and expected and
received the same in return. She managed her classes with an easy and friendly manner, and students
responded to her positively. As safety is an important part of management in PE, she established
straightforward expectations around procedures and routines. Danielle dealt with inappropriate behaviour in a
calm and professional manner. She provided leadership as a coach to a junior high girls volleyball team, and
realized the importance of developing strong relationships with her student athletes. Danielle was pleased to
see the carry over effect into her classes with the students she coached.
Danielle used the assessment system that was established at Magrath High School. We had discussions
about the use of appropriate assessment tools in both of her subject areas, and the role feedback played in
planning future lessons. I would encourage Danielle to continue to question and challenge her own
understanding of this important area in future teaching opportunities. Danielle collected marks for all of her
students and used the school reporting software to generate report card marks.
Danielle was professional in manner at all times throughout her internship. She demonstrated maturity and
good judgment, as well as a commitment to the teaching profession. Danielle is an excellent role model for
this age group, which is an important quality in a young teacher. I believe she will be a team player on any
school staff that she is on. I wish her well in all future endeavours.

Intern Teacher’s Descriptive Report:

My PSIII internship taught me so much for my future career as an educator and for life. Being at Magrath Junior
High School for PSII and PSIII was an amazing experience. I truly felt part of the staff and was welcomed and
supported by all my colleagues. Throughout PSIII, I was assigned to teach grade 7 to 9 Physical Education,
along with grade 7 Social Studies. I taught the general outcomes and taught many specific outcomes through a
wide range of activities. Social Studies was a very new curriculum to me. The majority of my teaching was
about the identity of Canada and how it came to be. Each class that I taught had about 26 students, having a
range of abilities and maturity levels. I explored differentiation through my planning to meet the different needs
of my students.
Teaching junior high Physical Education was a very interesting teaching assignment. Each grade level is so
drastically different from one another, and although each grade explored similar outcomes, the lessons had to
be modified according to their level. It was very apparent that I would have to have strong planning and be very
flexible with each grade as every day brought forward new opportunities, and challenges. A challenge for me
was sharing the physical space and all that comes with it. Sharing the gym with another class brought more
noise, a smaller space, and two times the amount of students in one space. We were lucky enough to have
good weather for the first two months of school and could go outside, but inevitably, we had to bring classes
inside when it got colder and split the gym by putting down the curtain. This again was something that I adapted
to and had to plan accordingly.
A strength of mine that has really been apparent during PSIII is my classroom management, especially in the
gym. Having played four years of post-secondary basketball, and one year of post-secondary volleyball has
really gave me the confidence and credibility for management in the gym setting. My Professional Inquiry
Project focused around the question: How do we implement activities that promote physical literacy for life
through a variety of acitivites for those students who struggle in PE class? Through exploring the question and
talking to students, I created a long booklet of PE games that can be used in class for any situation and
scenario that can include all students based on their abilities.
Social Studies 7 posed a new, but exciting opportunity. In previous practicums, I hadn’t taught social studies, so
this was a completely new curriculum to work with. The first unit that I taught, I felt as though I was also
learning the material with the students. It required me to stay ahead of my students. I was required to do in
depth planning and become very familiar with the program of studies, along with my goal being to explore and
deeply understand the social studies 7 curriculum. Through this, I became more adept in assessing social
outcomes. With each lesson, I got more comfortable and confident in my ability to teach the subject, along with
assess the outcomes.
During this time, I was the head coach of the grade 7 girls volleyball team. This was an extremely rewarding
experience, and coaching these girls built my relationship with them in the classroom as well. After playing
volleyball in my first year of university, it was great to get back into this sport and be on the coaching side of
things.
I learned a lot about myself as an educator through this experience. I valued the time that I had to teach in the
classroom as well as the gym, and enjoyed every minute of it, as it required a different teaching and
management style. Everything that I learned and every relationship that I built with the students and staff is
something that I will cherish forever.

Teacher Mentor Comments:

Danielle is more than ready for the teacher profession. In the gymnasium she is very comfortable in both
planning and classroom management. She relates well with the students and is knowledgeable in multiple
sports. I pushed her and challenged her in regards of her comfort zone having her teach dance and
gymnastics this term. She pass with flying colours! Most PE instructors are great working with volleyball and
basketball, which she was but trying these new activities she shone as well. She is able to make sure all are
included and feel comfortable no matter their skill level.
She also taught my Grade 7 Social Studies class. This also stretched her skills as she had never taught this
subject before. Her abilities to relate with students transitioned well from the gym to the classroom. She
allowed the students to work on their own but also gave detailed instructions, which, working with Gr 7 need
constant explanations in a variety of ways to get through to the students. It would be easy to get frustrated
with them, but she was able to take a deep breathe and find another way to explain her lesson.
Danielle was able to use multiple ways to evaluate students besides simply "giving test." This allowed all
students an opportunity to shine. One such project was making hats like the fur traders did. The students had
fun while also learning about the history of the furs in Canada.
While here in Magrath Danielle also volunteered dozens of hours to our volleyball program. She coached our
Gr 7 girls volleyball team and did a great job. At our school the GR 7 teams have to practice at 7 am due to a
lack of gym time, so she would be leaving Lethbridge by 6:15 am three times a week to come out here. What
dedication!
We have enjoyed out time with her here and I hope we can find a spot for her in the future. Whomever is able
to hire her will be very fortunate.
Ron

Administrator Comments:

The experiences Danielle has had in Magrath have provided her with a solid foundation from which she can
grow and continue to progress as a teacher. She was able to go through the process of effective planning
using high yielding instructional strategies and utilized many different formative and summative assessment
strategies to move student learning forward.

Danielle developed meaningful relationships with her students. This relationship was based on a reciprocal
type of trust which helped both the student and teacher have a positive experience. She participated fully in
the school community and was more than willing to help in any way possible with the “extra” things that are
needed to help run an effective school.

Danielle took the initiative to be the head coach of our grade 7 girls volleyball team and did an amazing job of
working with these girls and their families outside of the regular school day.

Danielle has made great strides in her teaching abilities and is on her way to being one of the best.
