In this activity you will use the Simulation:
Charges and Fields to develop your understanding
of the relationship between electric fields and
electric potential.

Electric Field

Open the PHET simulation “Charges and Fields”. Add positive and negative charges as shown in
the diagram below. Draw appropriate electric field lines around and in between the three charges.

(a) Using this simulation study and record the variation in capacitance with and without
dielectric to compare the values

(b) Write the expression for capacitance of parallel plate capacitor and derive the dimension
of capacitance.

4. A parallel plate capacitor is charged to a potential difference V by d.c. source and then
disconnected. The distance between the plates is then halved. Explain with reason for the
change in electric field, capacitance and energy of the capacitor.

(b) Derive the expression for capacitance of parallel plate capacitor

4. A parallel plate capacitor is charged by a battery. After some time, the battery is disconnected and a
dielectric slab of dielectric constant ‘K’ is inserted between the plates. How would the capacitance, the
electric field between the plates and the energy stored in the capacitor, be affected?
