I. ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

Thanks to our Father, who is in heaven, for giving us the gift of

life as always and blessings upon us. Moreover, I am grateful for the
generosity that has only made me experience to complete this work, if
he does not, how am I finish it? I would like to take this opportunity
to represent a humble thankfulness for these people; Sione Moala
Fifita is one of His Majesty's Armed Forces, Sheila Ve’etutu is one of
the Tupou Tertiary Institute students in the School of Teaching, and
my beloved parents. These people have given me a piece of reliable
information and their suggestions were very helpful to my research.
All I know about these people, they were all here at the time of the
Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha’apai natural disaster and they experienced all
the risks and ways to reduce it. I do appreciate it, but I do not have
enough words to show them how grateful I am.

Once again, I am so grateful to acknowledge all the sources of

information including the Internet, Articles, YouTube, and my
observations. All of these sources were very helpful in completing
this research.

1. EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

The purpose of this report is to prepare a guide for coastal

landowners in Tonga to help them understand & reduce the tsunami
risks on their homes and/or businesses. The reason why this report
was requested is after the natural disaster happened on January 15,
2024. According to articles recorded and published by several News
Organizations, especially the Department of NEMO, they record a lot
of damage, not only that but they were appointed the coastal
landowners as the high-risk areas for tsunami
2. INTRODUCTION

Back to January 15, 2024. This day will never be forgotten in

the memory of the Tongan generation. The volcanic eruption of
Hunga Tonga-Hunga Haapai triggered a quake on the ocean floor and
this is the main cause of the Tsunami back in that day. The tsunami
hit all around our coastal area not only here in Tongatapu but also in
our small island group especially ‘Atata and ‘Otumu’omu’a Groups.
This kind of disaster is also known as a high-risk disaster, and it
should be able to strike if the magnitude of the earthquake is over
7.0mag or 100 km (62 miles) below the sea surface. It happened with
a lot of damage to the Kingdom with the risky situation.

In this report, I will reveal the potential risk of tsunamis as well

as possible solutions to these. There was a lot of risk after the disaster.
I suggested to finding out the ten risks of the tsunami and another ten
of ways to reduce it. This work is intended for the coastal landowners
to help them understand & reduce the tsunami risk on their homes
and/or businesses

I faced some physical problems like; I did not having enough

time to sleep and rest, cannot be able to do some of my chores at
home, and somedays, I am not feeling well to work on this report and
lack of my time according to all my other assessments. My work for
this report needs to be done. I tried my best to complete all of my
work for this report and it is done.
3. TERMS OF REFEENCE

On the 6th of March, Miss Toluta’u (my own teacher in this

course) told us; that the purpose of this report is to prepare a guide for
coastal landowners to help them understand & reduce tsunami risk in
their homes. This report was submitted to Miss Toluta’u via Moodle
on the 18th of March 2024

4. PROCEDURE

In this procedure, I choose the Internet, Interviews, YouTube, articles,

and my observations as a method to collect the information to write
this report.

1. Risk to life
2. Out of power supply
5.1.2. Way to reduce risk
5.1.2.1. Way to reduce 5.1.1.1.
 Planning and practicing for response to
tsunamis

 Warning the public

 Establishing, marking, and publicizing
evacuation rout
 Educating the public (residents and visitors)
about tsunamis and tsunami safety before a
tsunami strikes
5.1.2.2. Way to reduce 5.1.1.2
 Prepare a portable power supply

5.2.1.4. Poor quality infrastructure
5.2.2. Way to reduce risk
5.2.2.1. Way to reduce 5.2.1.1.
 Request that the MOH conduct water testing
before drinking
5.2.2.2. Way to reduce 5.2.1.2.
 Saving money for renovation (online saving)
5.2.2.3. Way to reduce 5.2.1.3.
 Foundation to be strong
 Build house at high environment
5.2.2.4. Way to reduce 5.2.1.4
 Request advice from the engineer regarding building standard

5.3 Personal observation

5.3.1 Risk of tsunami found from my observation.
5.3.1.1 Soil erosion
5.3.1.2. Slow treatment of injuries
5.3.2. Way to reduce risk
5.3.2.1 Way to reduce 5.3.1.1.
 Recruit people to help plant mangroves on the shores and avoid
trimming trees, especially the mangroves.
5.3.2.2. Way to reduce 5.3.1.2
 Prepare a 72-hour bag pack including medication for first aid
material.

5.4 YouTube

5.4.2. Way to reduce risk
5.4.2.1. Way to reduce risk 5.4.1.1.
 Check out of street drainage to see if it is blocked with any
component or something stuck inside the drain line.
5.4.2.2. Way to reduce risk 5.4.1.2.
 Prepare protection equipment for the safety of yourself.
6. CONCLUSION

This conclusion, I would like to explore all the information that

I have collected from my research, to help the landowners understand
the risk and reduce it for the sake of their safety from the impact of a
tsunami. I know there is more than ten risk of tsunami to our coastal
area especially the small Island Group around the Tongan region.
5.1.1.1. It talks about the risk of tsunami to life.
As we all know, some lives were at risk by the tsunami at the time of
the disaster, some people lost their lives because of this disaster and
some of them were injured. The reason why this risk happened is
because of the response to the tsunami and warning.
5.1.1.2. Out of power supply.
After the disaster, this one of the problems we faced, when electricity
was switched off many electrical equipment was damaged like
refrigerator, not only that but also the security camera
5.2.1.1 Drinking water contaminates.
Our water supplies were at risk too, after that tsunami was also part of
our water resources and it was long before we would be dealing with
this problem. Not only that but also no longer reliable of drinking
water tanks in the areas where the disaster occurred.
5.2.1.2 Risk of the Economy.
A natural disaster will inevitably have an impact on the economy for
these people facing disaster, in the build-up and in particular to
affected businesses.
5.2.1.3 Risk of property damage
One of the problems faced by people affected by the disaster was
damage to their properties, especially the business owners.
5.2.1.4. Poor quality infrastructure
This made it evident after that the tsunami was not strong and that the
buildings that had collapsed were not strong. What was clear was that
some buildings had been in place for too long and the buildings had
poor foundations.
5.3.1.1 Soil erosion
Soil erosion can happen in two different ways how we treat our land,
by trimming trees and excavating sand from the beach.
5.3.1.2 Slow treatment of injuries
It became clear that after the tragedy, there were injuries that
occurred, usually due to a delay in providing first aid to the victims as
well as to the injured.
5.4.1.1. Flood
Whereabouts flooding usually occurs only in heavy rains but they
revealed from some sources of information that minor floods occurred
after tsunamis.
5.4.1.2 Poor protection equipment
Injuries usually occur in times of disaster, caused by a failure of the
main safety equipment for life-saving supplies.
7. RECOMMENDATION
In this recommendation, I will suggest all the way that I have
collected from my research as a way to reduce all the risk of tsunami
that I state above. I believed that all the information that I have collect
would be helpful for the future in order to reduce risk of tsunami.
7.1. Way to reduce 5.1.1.1.

tsunamis
