Subject: Earthquakes and Tsunamis, Who to believe?
On September 22nd, I attended to a video conference that was held remotely via Google Meet that
convened at 12:00pm. The conference was arranged by the Student Association of Chemistry and Physics
(AEQF) and Professor Jose M. Rivera was presiding. This report highlights on what are the earthquakes
and tsunamis, difference between forecast and prediction, and how to prepare an emergency plan before,
during and after the earthquake.

Earthquakes and Tsunamis:

1. Earthquakes – It is a sudden movement in which energy is accumulated in the earth’s crust or
in the upper mantle caused by the passage of seismic waves.
2. Tsunamis – Is an event that involves a group of waves in a body of water of high energy and
variable sizes that occurs when a large body of water is displaced by other phenoms like
earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, etc.

Forecast and Prediction:

1. The Forecasting an earthquake is intent to calculate the probability of a significant earthquake in
a specific region.
2. Predicting an earthquake or tsunami is not possible because there is no technology that cannot
predicted.

Emergency plan:
1) How to prepare and act from an earthquake:
a) Before:
i) Develop a protection, security and evacuation plan.
ii) Have a basic knowledge about first aid and emergency kit.
iii) Look for safe places at home, college or at work and practice “duck, cover, and hold on”

b) During:
i) Use the “duck, cover and hold on” routine and keep calm.

c) After:
i) Be prepared for more earthquakes
ii) Stay away from coastal and flood areas.
iii) Do not go outside if the surroundings aren’t safe.
2) How to act from a tsunami:
a) Is you are located in the beach, you should run to the highest point like a rooftop.

Closing:
This conference helped me to be more prepare for these phenoms and know that earthquakes and
tsunamis are not predictable. The meeting adjourned at 1:30pm
