Chapter: DC Generator

1. A dc shunt generator has the following data:

(a) Rated Load = 25 kW
(b) Rated Terminal Voltage = 240V
(c) Speed of generator = 500 rpm
(d) Armature resistance = 0.exam roll no Ω
(e) Number of conductors = 660
(f) Type of winding – Wave
(g) Diameter of the pole shoe = 40 cm
(h) The length of the pole shoe is 25 cm and the pole subtends an angle of 55 0.
(i) Shunt field current is neglected
(j) Number of poles = 6

Determine the flux density in the air gap

2. A 6 pole generator supplies a current of 156 A. It has 500 armature conductor, wave
connected. At the time of delivering full load current, a lead of 8 0 is made for brushes. Determine
the demagnetizing ampere turns per pole. The shunt field winding of the generator carries
10.exam roll no A. Determine the number of extra shunt winding turns for neutralizing the
demagnetizing effect.

3. A 110 V compound generator has the resistance of the armature, shunt and series windings
are 0.06, 25 and 0.0exam roll no. Ω respectively. The load consists of 200 lamps each rated at
55 W, 100 V. Find the emf and armature current when the machine is connected for (a) short
shunt and (b) long shunt

4. A 250 kW, 400 V, 6 pole dc generator has 720 lap wound conductors. It is given a brush lead
of 2.exam roll no angular degrees (mech.) from the geometric neutral. Calculate the cross and
demagnetizing turns per pole. Neglect the shunt field current.

5. The open circuit characteristic of a shunt generator at certain speed is

If (A) 1 2.5 5 7 9 12 15 18
Voc (V) 22 231 400 479 539 605 642 671
The field and armature resistances are 46 Ω and 0.exam roll no. Ω respectively. Estimate the
terminal voltage when the armature current is 360 A in two cases (a) Armature reaction ignored
(b) 1 A, field current is needed to counteract the effect of armature reaction.

6. A 50 kW, 250 V, 200 A long shunt cumulative compound dc generator has the following data:

Ra (inclusive of brush voltage drop) = 0.0exam roll no. Ω

Series field resistance Rse = 0.01 Ω

Induced emf = 280 V at 1200 rpm

Shunt field turns, Nf = 1000

Series field turns, Nse = 3

If the generator is run at 1150 rpm and its shunt field current is adjusted to 5.6 A, compute the
terminal voltage at rated voltage and current.

7. The full load regulation of two dc shunt generators are 5.exam roll no % and 4.5 %. The
rating of both the machines are 250 kW and 450V. How will they share a load current of 900 A.
