Circle
A round plane figure whose boundary consists of points equidistant from a fixed point.
Centre
The centre of the circle is the fixed point from which all points on the
boundary of the circle are equidistant. Often noted on diagrams as ‘O’.

Radius
The distance from the centre of a circle to the outside. The radius of the circle is
half the diameter of the circle. The plural of radius
is radii.

Diameter
The distance across the circle going through the
centre. The diameter is twice the radius.

Circumference

The distance once around the circle.

Arc

A part of the circumference.

Major arc – A major arc is greater than half the circumference.

Minor arc – A minor arc is less than half the circumference.
Chord
A line segment going from one point of the
circumference to another but does not go through the centre.
Secant
A line that goes through the circle at two points.

Tangent
2

A straight line that touches the circle at a single

Page
point only.

Sector
A section of the circle created by two radii.

Major sector – A major sector has a central angle which is more

than 1800

Minor sector – A minor sector has a central angle which is less

than 1800

Angles Subtended on the Same Arc/ Angles in the same segment are equal

Angles formed from two points on the circumference are equal to other angles, in the same arc,
formed from those two points.

Example
Find the angle DBC

∠ DAC is subtended by arc DC. Another inscribed angle subtended by the same arc
5
Page

is _DBC Therefore the measure of ∠ DBC is _43°.

Reason: Because angles subtended by the same arc are equal

4. A, B, C and D are points on the circumference of a circle.
Find the angle of ACD. Give reasons for your answer.
ACD = ___________________
Reason: _________________________________

The measure of the central angle is twice the measure of an inscribed

angle subtended by the same arc./ The angle at the centre is twice the
angle at the circumference.

Angle AOB = 2 x Angle ACB

Example
Find the measure of the angle AOB

ACB is an inscribed angle made by arc AB. The central angle made by the same arc is
370. Therefore, the measurement of ∠ AOB is °.

Reason: The angle at the centre is twice the angle at the circumference.
