SEQUENCES
Sequence refers to an ordered list of numbers called
terms, which may have repeated values.
Ellipsis means go on
2, 4, 6, 8, 10, . . . forever (infinite)

ARITHMETIC SEQUENCE

An arithmetic sequence is an ordered set of numbers

that have a common difference between each
consecutive term.
Examples: 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, …
-7, -3, 1, 5, 9, …
17, 34, 51, 68, …

ARITHMETIC SEQUENCE

Find the common difference and the next three terms

of the given sequences.
1. -7, 4, 15, ___, ___, ___ 3. 4.1, 11.1, 18.1, ___, ___, ___
2. -8, -5, -2, ___, ___, ___ 4. -3, -23,-43 ___, ___, ___

Nth TERM OF AN ARITHMETIC SEQUENCE

To find the nth term:

𝒂𝒏 = 𝒂𝟏 + 𝒏 − 𝟏 𝒅
where:
𝒂𝒏 = nth term of the sequence
𝒂𝟏 = first term of the sequence
𝒅 = common difference
n = term position

Nth TERM OF AN ARITHMETIC SEQUENCE

Example 1: Find the 20th term of the sequence 4, 9, 14, 19, …

Example 2: Find the 15th term of the sequence 12, 21, 30, 39, …
Example 3: Find 𝒂𝒏 , if 𝑎1 = 7, d=3, n=11
Example 4: Find 𝒂𝒏 , if 𝑎1 = 50, d=-8, n=10
Example 5: What term is 52 in the arithmetic sequence -3, 2, 7, 12, …?

ARITHMETIC SEQUENCE- WORD PROBLEM

Daniel is an athlete for a 100m dash. After his

competition he received a knee injury. His trainer
instructed him to return to his jogging program slowly.
He suggests jogging for 12 minutes for the first week
and each week thereafter, he will increase that time by
6 minutes. What is his jogging time for the 8th week?

GEOMETRIC SEQUENCE

Geometric sequences are sequences where the term can be

determined by multiplying the previous term with a fixed
factor we call the common ratio.
Examples: 6, 18, 54, 162, . . .
𝟏 𝟏 𝟏 𝟏
, , , ,...
𝟐 𝟔 𝟏𝟖 𝟓𝟒
-3, -12, -48 …

the given sequences.
1. 1, 4, 16, 64, ___, ___, ___
2. 1, -1, 1, -1, , ___, ___, ___
3. 100, 10, 1, 0.1, ___, ___, ___
