What is unemployment?
A term referring to individuals who are
employable and seeking a job but are
unable to find a job.

- Unemployment is a term referring to

individuals who are employable and
actively seeking a job but are unable to
find a job. Included in this group are those
people in the workforce who are working
but do not have an appropriate job. Usually - The picture shows one of the economic

which is dividing the number of
unemployed people by the total number of
people in the workforce, unemployment
serves as one of the indicators of a
country’s economic status.

The unemployment rate is the percentage

of the total labor force that is unemployed
but actively seeking employment and
willing to work. “Yes Ma’am”
To calculate the unemployment rate, you
take the number of unemployed divided by
the labor force times 100.

So, for example, if there are 10 M

unemployed people in a country and 150
million in the labor force, you’d have an
unemployment rate of 6.67 percent. - The reasons for unemployment are

attainment, and lack of opportunities.

Unemployment occurs for different

reasons. There are four Categories of
unemployment; Frictional, Structural,
Cyclical, and Seasonal.

Types of Unemployment
Frictional unemployment – is the result of
workers searching for new employment or
transitioning from their old jobs to new
ones. It occurs when people voluntarily
change jobs. After a person leaves a
company. Similarly, graduates just starting
to look for jobs to enter the workforce add
to frictional unemployment.
- An example of frictional unemployment
is an individual or a person who quits
What is an example of frictional his/her job and looks for a better job or
unemployment? another company and also it includes
here a fresh graduate that looks for a

Cyclical unemployment – is the variation

in the number of unemployed workers over
the course of economic upturns and
downturns, such as those related to
changes in oil prices. Unemployment rises
during recessionary periods and declines
during periods of economic growth.

- A factory worker was terminated from

his/her job during the recession to cut

situation of Cyclical unemployment?

Structural unemployment – comes about

through a technological change in the
structure of the economy in which labor
markets operate. Technological changes
can lead to unemployment among workers
displaced from jobs that are no longer
needed.
What is an example of Structural - A clothing manufacturing factory
unemployment? purchases specialized equipment to
enhance the production assembly
process. This technology increases
production efficiency but replaces
several assembly workers.

Seasonal unemployment – is when people

who work in seasonal jobs become
unemployed when the demand for labor
decreases. This typically occurs when a
specific time of year ends or a new season
begins, such as for a holiday or due to
weather changes.

What is an example of Seasonal - Agricultural workers may face

unemployment? unemployment during off-seasons when
there is no need for planting or
harvesting crops.
