ABSTRACT

This study explored the pattern of video game usage and video game addiction
among male college students and examined how video game addiction was related to
expectations of college engagement, college grade point average (GPA), and on-
campus drug and alcohol violations. Participants were 477 male, first year students at a
liberal arts college. In the week before the start of classes, participants were given two
surveys: one of expected college engagement, and the second of video game usage,
including a measure of video game addiction. Results suggested that video game
addiction is (a) negatively correlated with expected college engagement, (b) negatively
correlated with college GPA, even when controlling for high school GPA, and (c)
negatively correlated with drug and alcohol violations that occurred during the first year
in college. Results are discussed in terms of implications for male students’ engagement
and success in college, and in terms of the construct validity of video game addiction.

Keywords: video game addiction, expectation of college engagement, on-campus drug

and alcohol violations

Statement of the Problem

The purpose of this study is to determine the relationship between the predictor
variable and the criterion variable of the respondents in the research locale. Specifically,
the researchers aim to answer the following questions;

1. Ask a question about the first variable in the purpose statement according to;

a. parameter a

b. parameter b? (Parameters are only added when there are specific bases for
measuring a variable)

2. Ask a question about the second variable in the purpose statement according to;

a. parameter a

b. parameter b? (Parameters are only added when there are specific bases for
measuring a variable)

3. Is there a significant relationship/difference between the independent variable and

the dependent variable? (Ask the inferential/main question for a design)

4. Based on the result of the study what implications can be drawn? (if it is not a big
part of your study, it’s your decision to add an implication question)

Hypothesis

There is no significant relationship/difference between the independent variable

and the dependent variable?

Scope and Delimitation

This study focused on the identification of the significant relationship between the
predictor variable and the criterion variable. The predictor variable is variable x which is
perceived to be affecting variable y the criterion variable. Variable x will only be
measured through the following parameters: parameter a, parameter b, parameter c,
while variable y will be measured through parameter a, parameter b, parameter c. The
confounding variables that were experimentally controlled were, Control 1, Control 2,
Control 3 On the other hand, the extraneous variables which were not considered in the

2

study are extraneous V.1, extraneous V.2, and extraneous V.3. to name a few. These
extraneous variables can be the basis for improvement in the case that future studies
will decide to replicate this one.

The respondents of the study is delimited to 100 students and 100 teachers of
the locale in the school year 2020-2021. The study will be conducted from January 1,
2020 to December 31, 2020, tentatively 4 months.

A validated questionnaire checklist served as the main instrument of the study, a

follow up interview was also used to clarify vague answers and documentary analysis
was also employed to answer the specific questions raised in the proposal.

Significance of the Study

The results of this study will be beneficial to the following:

Beneficiary 1. The Beneficiary 1 will benefit from the study through (explain how
can they specifically benefit from study)

Beneficiary 2. The Beneficiary 2 will benefit from the study by (explain how can

METHODOLOGY

This chapter presents the methodologies employed in the study in order to gather
the data; specifically, its research design, the research locale, research respondents,
instrumentation, data gathering procedure, the method of data analysis, and the ethics
considered in the study.

Research Design

The study used quantitative methodology particularly correlational research

design. According to Creswell (2014), Correlation research design is a study aiming to
determine the relationship between two variables. The researchers will use correlation
research design by identifying the value of the X variable through an X instrument and
the value of the Y variable through an x instrument. With both values of the variables,
the researchers will then find the correlation between the X and Y variable using the X
statistical analysis. (State the Design you used and what major method is it under Give a
short definition of the design of you must. Explain how you used the design in your
study)

The study will be conducted in *** High School, **** City. The school is known for
its … (provide a short Description of the School). The researchers decided to conduct
the study in this locale because … (State why you chose the school as the locale, the
reason must be around a problem). Figure 2 presents the map of the research locale.

Research Instrument

The researcher used a developed Survey questionnaire (State the type of

instrument you used in the study and specified if it is it adapted, modified, or
developed). The research of Author (2020) and the data from Source (2020) became the
basis for the items in the survey (questionnaire If the instrument is adapted, give a short
description about the adapted instrument. If the instrument is modified state its
modification and the basis for modification. If the instrument is developed state how did
you developed it and the basis for the items). In a 5 point likert scale, the Survey
questionnaire will determine the level of agreement of the respondents to effectiveness
of the ABC program. It will be composed of three parts: part 1 is composed of 5
positively stated statements about parameter 1, part 2 is composed of 5 positively stated
statements about parameter 2, and part 3 is composed of 5 positively stated statements
about parameter 3. (Describe the Major format of the instrument: the number of parts,
the number of questions per parts, the structure of the questions and the type of scale
used.)

Validity and Reliability

The validity of the instrument was checked through the use of constructed
validation form the researchers acquired from the institution. The researcher then sent
the form and the research instrument to three validators expert on the field (specify what
field is here) to check on the construct validity of the instrument. The researcher checked
the reliability of the instrument through a Split-half method. The researcher identified 10
students who will not be part of the study will make them answer a revised format of the
instrument where the odd numbers are in set A and the even numbers are in set B. The
researcher then calculated the reliability of the instrument by comparing the reliability
coefficient of the two tests. (This will change depending on the reliability test chosen by
the respondent)

Data Gathering Procedure

The data gathering procedure and its specific steps and parts are presented
below, from the sending of permission letters, the preparation of materials, the actual
gathering of data, and the retrieval and/or analysis and measurement of data. Figure 3
presents the research flow chart of the study. (The procedure will depend from study to

10

study, however, it often starts with the asking of permission from gatekeepers and must
end with analysis of data. Moreover, the actual data gathering process must be very
detailed).

Figure 3

Research Flow Chart

Asking of Permission

Before the data was gathered, the researchers secured a written permit from the
gatekeeper of the locale, particularly the state who did you send the letter to here .

Preparation of Materials

Preparation of materials is only added for experimental research. In this

section, the researchers must enumerate all the needed materials for the conduct
of the experiment. If the study is a survey, this part will be left out since the
instrument (which is the material of the study) is already elaborated in the
previous section)

Surveying

After given permission to conduct the study, the researcher went to the locale,
identified the respondents, allowed them to read and agree on the informed consent,
and asked them to take the survey. After the survey, the data was retrieved the very
same day and was immediately put under statistical analysis. (For experimental
research, more of this section will be added depending on the number of tests to be
conducted).

Statistical Treatment (Use the title method of analysis for Quali)

The Method of analysis used in the study is Statistical analysis of data.

Specifically, they are the following tools:

Mean. The researchers used Mean, a Descriptive statistics of Central Tendency

to get the average score of the students speaking proficiency.

Statistical Tool 2. Explain how is it used and to what variable/s. Explain

Archival Analysis. To answer the first statement of the problem, the researcher
used archival analysis which involves seeking out and extracting information and/or the
primary sources that will be included to the research are held in the archives of different
institution, particularly the archives of the locale of this study. The researchers acquired
information regarding the school policies of the institution through the interview, since
the school doesn’t own a handbook and only follows the DepEd Magna Carta for Public
School Teachers, otherwise known as Republic Act No. 4670. (These are samples only
for Qualitative Method analysis section from Navarro, 2017)

Thematic Analysis. For the second statement of the problem, thematic analysis,
which is also a method for analyzing data in qualitative researches, was used. This
analysis is normally used to analyze and is applied to a set of text such as interview
transcripts and survey questionnaires. The answers collected from the interview guide
were analyzed and interpreted in order to have the written outputs for the research. The
researchers then concluded the dominant answers from the questionnaires since this
answered the statement of the problem. (These are samples only for Qualitative

Ethical Consideration

The researchers made sure that the study will not cause any harm whatsoever to all
that will be involved. To that, the researchers considered the following ethical concepts;

Formal approval. The researchers made sure that ethical support will be first
sought at the institutional level, by ensuring that they gain approval through existing
formal structures within the senior high school faculty.
