When preparing for my contemporary monologue I looked for something that had anger in it and

good emotional growth but also communicated for something they stood for. I looked towards my
favourite female characters when I found cassie from promising young women. I worked on this with
katy Carmicheal. We found it was a great fit for me however wasn’t a scripted play and therefore
couldn’t be used for the final audition. Katy really taught us to act from within and if the character
along with everything else matches the performance will be so genuine and raw that the audience
will immediately be yours. It took a lot of playing with the script to find the stronger and weaker
parts within the monologue and then adapt so it has emotional growth and make the audience want
more. When given the play “Blank” it immediately made me think of other plays like “love and
information” and “Buckets” as both have no characters, scenes or an order. They all give you
creative control meaning every time each one is preformed, they will all be individual allowing you
to re-read or watch with a fresh perspective making each performance just as exciting. Having had
experience with scripts like this, i knew how to take my own initiative and could start developing the
piece. I wanted the character to come across as if she knew what she was doing to seem more
convincing to her mum so she wouldn't be as mad however the possibility starts taunting her and
she can't help but spiral out of control. This shows the calm put together outside start to crumble
just like the inside. Since this script has no casting type i had really had to think about who my
character is and try to put my mind into the situation that she's in. I did relate back to “Cassie” from
my original monologue to find similarities between the two, like how both of them want so much
more out of life yet they probably will never get what they dream. I think there is an interesting
detail when you compare them both. Cassies life changed because her best friend was no longer
alive which is something she was angry about, if fuled her anger and drove her to somehow make up
for it. The character i play in “Blank” has now got the responsibility of life, which is driving her
insane, although she won't admit it, deep down i feel like she doesn't want the child but feels like a
bad person saying no. One's life changed because a life was lost and the other changed because a
life was gained making the anger they both feel route from the same place. This helped me feel
more connected to the characters and understand on a deeper level. I find i can play a variety of
characters, comical, sincere, dumb, annoying but now i know there's something about playing a
character that has a reason to fight that i can connect with the best.
