Engineering Applications of Hydrology

Hydrology is the science of occurrence, movement, distribution and circulation of earth`s
water having interaction with the surrounding environment including living and nonliving
things.

It has a wide range of applications in this regard …

Planning, Design, Operation, and Maintenance of Water Resource Engineering Projects.

Engineering Applications of Hydrology

• Hydraulic Structures (Dams, Barrages, Weirs, Canals, Levees etc.)
• Water Supply
• Waste Water Treatment
• Irrigation (Agricultural Areas)
• Drainage (Roads, Buildings, Airports, etc.)
• Hydropower generation
• Flood Control
• Erosion and Sediment Control
• Recreational Use of Water
• Fish and Wildlife Protection

Engineering Applications of Hydrology

• In these projects Hydrological Investigations are carried out for the following necessary
factor
• Capacity of the storage structures.
• Magnitude of Flood flow to enable safe disposal of surplus flow
• Minimum and Maximum Flow available in various seasons.
• Interaction of flood waves and hydraulic structures like Dams, levees, barrages, and
bridges.

Importance of Hydrology
• Overtopping and consequent failure of Earthen Dam.
• Failure of Spillway due to Surplus flow.
• Breaching of bridges and culverts due to excessive flow.
• The inability of large reservoirs to fill up with water due to overestimation of stream flow.
• Almost all phases of the hydrological cycle are non-uniformly distributed both in time and
space.
• It is necessary to study and interpret these variabilities with the aid of hydrologic studies.
