!.A Paragraph is a group of sentences which are arranged in a logical order to provide
appropriate details or information on single topic. In other words, a paragraph contains
sentences which have interrelated meaning and which develop single issue topic. A
paragraph is a basic building block for any prose or it can be a complete work in itself. It
segments and enables readers easily understand the message of a given essay. It also helps to
group related items for readers benefit because a paragraph treats only one idea at a time
there is no clear cut decision on how long a paragraph should be. However, it is usually
advisable not to extend a paragraph to more than either to ten lines or one hundred twenty
words.
2.1 Guidelines in Paragraph Writing Process
1. Pre- writing - why am I writing?
- What do I want to say?
- Who will read this?

- Find a main point
- Support your main point
Supply the appropriate topic and topic sentences for the following paragraphs
Paragraph 1

eggs in the sand without being instructed by its parents caterpillars know how to thy when

However, it is an interesting statements and other because the reader wants to hear why the
author thinks so, or what w justifies this statements
2. The firs supporting details
Poodles are suspect, smart, playful, and well mannered and they dove to be around people.
They are always willing to lend their unquestionable love and locality when you need the
most and are you’re for life.
This main point talks about the dogs personality and their companionship relating to the
topic sentence, helping prove that relating to the topic sentence, helping prove that poodle are
ideal pets yet, most likely a reader would need ,ore convincing justifications.

their responsibilities in such sensitive areas as computer security and use.
In the above paragraph, the four sentence about the four goals start with same grammatical
structure (----- they introduce/ give/ explain/ help/ trainee---) there is also parallelism with in
the individual sentence: present participles (logging, selecting---) and past participle (ordered
used---) the transitional words first, second, third, fourth, conveys a sense of parallelism as
well as of sequence.
Note: coherence and discussed before, is among the compulsory qualities of a good
paragraph. Two or more of the four techniques discussed above are usually used
simultaneously to create coherence in a given paragraph. It is almost impossible to create

structure can help to make our paragraph more clear and avoid the possible monotony that
may destroy the attention of the readers while reading our text. If sentence of the same
pattern i.e. subject+ verb, our writing will be dull and may put the reader to sleep. For
example in paragraph 1 above, almost all sentences used are compound and only the
conjunction “and” is used to join the sentence structures and paragraph dull. However in
paragraph 2 different types of sentence structures and conjunction are used to add variety to
the paragraph. The ability of produce texts or paragraphs with good variety usually is gained
though continuous practice. However the following techniques may help to put interesting
variations in to our written work.

Even though other kinds of music are more popular, classical music will have a following. It
offers richness, diversity, and sheer beauty that cannot be matched by other
Classical music means music of the highest quality created by European artists of the first
rank such as Mozart, bach, Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, and Schubert. Most classical music was
composed before the twentieth century.
Its following today consists of people in every part of the world, especially the cities. They
are usually better educated upper – class men and women who have had the opportunity to
study different types of music and have acquired developed musical tastes. They do not
necessarily dislike modem music, but they feel a strong preference for classical music.
Other types of music have shown a wide spread growth from the late ninetieths and early
twenties centuries in to our own time. Classical music has held on to its following
nevertheless. Concerts, classical music clubs, and sales of classical music records are
evidences of this continuing interest.
Economic problem is another major challenge the HIV victims face. The victims cannot
work for longer hours and earn enough money for they get tired very easily. What is more,
some organizations are not willing to employ the victims. As a result, they hardly afford to
buy medicine or proper diet that could prolong their life.
In general, HIV victims suffer from several problems related to the disease that usually make
their life short. The problems are more prevalent in developing countries like Ethiopia where
the victims hardly get counseling and life prolonging medicine.
One among the major problems that HIV victims face is social isolation. Due to lack of
awareness about the nature of the disease, people usually avoid the victims. They don’t like
to share things, even shake hands with the victims. Some people are also not willing to rent
house for the victims. Besides, the victims themselves feel inferior and want to stay alone
and attempt to take revenge on others by infecting others sometimes.

A writer’s purpose is his or chief reason for communicating something about a topic to a
particular audience purpose includes three elements of the writing situation –the writer, the
topic and the audience.
Purpose ties together the specific context in which the writer is working and the goal he/she
hopes to achieve. The purposes for writing can be to entertain readers, to express oneself to
describe something or somebody, to explain something to readers (exposition) and to
persuade readers to accept or act on ones opinion (argumentation).
3.4 Descriptive
When you write descriptive essay, you try to create a word picture of persons, places,
objects and emotions using a careful selection of details to make an impression on your
reader. The key word here is “descriptive’’. Your goal in a descriptive piece of writing is
therefore to describe something, someone, or some place in a way that shows the readers
rather than tells. This is done by using lots of descriptive language and details.
Descriptive writing can be done in an essay format ( 5 paragraphs ) or even as a story or a poem .
( By Foltz- Gray )
Note
Keep the following points in mind to write descriptive essay
Recognize your purpose – describing a scientific experiment or a business transaction, a
person etc.
Describe clearly, using specific details – if for example your family dog had become lost,
you could mention every distinguishing detail about your pet. Thinking about its size,
color, breed, cut of ears, and special marking, etc .
3.5 Narration
Narration is story –telling. A narrative essay tells a story through a sequence of events.
Narration differs in purpose from exposition and argument, its primary and basic appeal
is to the emotions of the reader or hearer rather than to the mind or the intellect. In
writing effective narrative essay you should.
Select an appropriate point of view
Follow a logical time sequence
Use details to present the setting
Make your characters believable
Read the following model narrative essays answer the questions that follow.

Small –Town terror
Situated between majestic mountains and rolling hills, Benton. Is much like any other small
eastern Tennessee settlement. It was election day, and looking forward to a visit to the ice
cream shop, I accompanied my grandfather as he drove the ten- mile journey to town.
I pondered the worried expression on the faces of the few people we saw on the streets It
seemed everyone was in a hurry. There were not the usual groups gathered to exchange local
gossip Most noticeable was the absence of children.
As my grandfather’s dilapidated Ford approached the town’s only traffic light, we were
greeted –not by flashing red, yellow or green –but by uniformed National Guardsmen armed
with guns and appearing much out of place in such placid surroundings. As our vehicle
slowed to a stop. I was horrified as I saw before me a huge machine gun, pointed in our
direction . A young guardsman walked briskly to the car explained, almost apologetically. “
Sorry Sir . but we’ll have to search car ; Just routine procedure.”
As the car was being searched, we learned the reason for such drastic precautionary
measures. A man whom we knew and who was a candidate for the sheriffs office , had been
brutally murdered in the presence of his wife and daughter : It was rumored that the opposing
party was responsible for the fatal shotgun blast, and other rumors stated that explosives
would be brought into town to bomb the courthouse.
As this unbelievable information was being given, I sat petrified, trying to convince myself
that this was the same town where only yesterday , old men in dirty overalls lounged around
the courthouse , spitting tobacco and discussing the forthcoming election
Dogs and children had romped freely on the sidewalks, while women browsed in the stores
for hours without buying anything Strangely. All this had changed overnight, and the
preconceptions I had about our peaceful country and the glorious right to vote were
beginning to sound as a sour note. Marching through the streets guards with guns gave the
appearance of towns I had seen in the movies Towns which did not know freedom but
captivity.
4.1 Fragments
Definition- A sentence is a group of words that has a subject and a verb and a verb and expresses a
complete thought, independent of other sentences.
- A fragment sentence is a group of words that looks like a sentence but is missing a subject, a verb
or a complete thought.
- A fragment is only a piece of a sentence, and it is considered serious mistakes in formal writing.
Example:
Sentence- I got home late, so I ate some cold pizza and drank a whole liter of Pepsi
Fragment-I got home late, so I ate some cold pizza. And drank a whole liter of Pepsi.
[And drank a whole liter of Pepsi contain a verb (drank) but no subject]
Fragments are missing a subject, a verb, or a complete subject, a verb, or a complete thought.
How do you find these problems in your own writing?
Fragment: It’s hard to find time to study. With all of my other work.
Fragment: The group is meeting this morning after my first class ends.
5. A word group that starts with an example explanation of something mentioned in the previous
sentence.
Examples:- of words that might start a fragment like. For Example such as, for instance.
Fragment:- Employees need to know of all exists from the building. For instance, the nearest first
exist.
Examples: - For several years when they are young children often have friends.
A dependent clause cannot be a sentence because it doesn’t express a complete thought, it has a
subject and a verb. When ever a dependent word starts what you think is a sentence, stop to check for
a subject, a verb, and a complete thought.
[Since I moved has a subject (I) and a verb (moved), but it doesn’t express a
Complete thought]
- how - what(ever)
- if - when (ever)
When a word group starts with whom, whose, or which, it is not complete sentence unless it is a
question.
Fragment- That is the police officer. Who gave me a ticket last week?
Correct a fragment that starts with a dependent word by connecting it to the sentence before and after
it.
If the dependent clause is joined to the sentence before it, you do not usually need to put a comma in
front of it. If the dependent clause is joined to the sentence after it, put a comma after the dependent
clause.
Example.
He fiddled with the lock for how before he lost his temper.
Since he lost his job six months a go my tenant has not paid the rent.
Defn:- An-‘ing’ verb form is the form of a verb that ends in-‘ing’ walking, writing, running unless it
has a helping verb (was walking, was writing, was running) it can not be a complete verb in a
sentence-sometimes an-‘ing’ verb form is used at the beginning of a complete sentence.
Sentence: Walking is good exercise. [The-‘ing’ verb form walking is subject: is the verb]. The
sentence expresses a complete thought.
Sometimes an ‘ing’ verb form introduces a fragment when an ‘ing’ verb form starts what you think
is a sentence. Stop, and check it for a subject, verb, and a complete thought.
*Fragment- I was running as fast as I could. Hopping to get there on time [Hopping to get there on
time locks a subject and a verb]
*Corrected: I was running as fast as I could I was still hoping to get there on time
- When what you think is a sentence begins with ‘to’ and a ‘verb’ you need to make sure that it is not
a fragment.
Examples:-
*Fragment:- Each week the newspapers runs a consumer watch. To tell readers
If a word group begins with ‘to’ and a ‘verb’ it must have another verb, or it is not a complete
sentence. When you see a word group that begins with ‘to’ and ‘a verb’ first check to see if there is
another verb. If there is not another verb, it is a fragment.
Examples:-
Sentence- To run a complete marathon was my goal. [To run is the subject: was is the verb]
[To change is not the verb, and there is not another verb in the word group]
To correct a fragment that starts with ‘to’ and ‘ a verb’ join it to the sentence before, or after it, or
add the missing sentence element.
Example:-
Corrected:- Cheri got underneath the car the needed to change the oil.
* Fragment:- I don’t like climbing out of windows. Especially from the third floor backs
subjects, verbs and complete thoughts]
- Reread your two sentences to make save they each contain a subject and a verb and express a
complete thought.
S V . S V
*Fused Sentence:- I interviewed a candidate for a job save me the “dead fish”
*Comma splice:- The “dea fish” is a limp handshake. The person plops her hand into You
- This last type of fragment is harder to recognize because there is no single word or kind of word to
look for. Here are a few starting words that may signal a fragment those examples or explanations do
not always start with these words.
- Especially - like
Defn:- A sentence is a group of words that has a subject and a verb and expresses a complete
thought. Sometimes two sentences are joined to form one longer sentence.
Two sentences must be joined with the proper punctuation: Fusing them together with no punctuation
creates a run-on error.
Two sentences must be joined with the proper punctuation and sometimes with a connecting word,
called a coordinating as well. Splice them together with only a comma creates a run-on-error.
- Until you get used to finding the run-ons (or until you don’t make the error anymore), this step will
take extra time. But if you spend the extra time, you’re writing will improve.
Once you have found a run-on, there are four ways to correct it
1. Add a period
2. Add a semicolon
3. Add a comma and a coordinating conjunction
4. Add a dependent word
A. Add a period
You can connect a run-on by adding a period to make two separate sentences. After adding the
period, capitalize the letter that begins the new sentence.
- As you arrange your ideas, consider using space order, time order, or order of importance.
- In the practices that follow, think about how the order you choose will affect the reader’s
understanding of your ideas.
Example:
I know the layout of my grocery store by heat; Answers may vary depending on how your store is
arranged
1. Robsan looked very professionals for her interview. Answer may vary.
__2___ White silk blouse with only top button under one at throat
Arrange the supporting details for each of the main points that follow according to a time order (first
to last) last to first: most recent to /beastliest to most recent. Indicate the sequence of ideas by writing
a number in the blank at the left. In some cases, more than one order is possible. Choose an order that
makes sense to you
Example:
__6___ Open the edit menu and pull down to the paste command and click.
__5___ Click in the space where you want to move the paragraph
__1___ using the mouse, drag the cursor the paragraph to highlight it
If you use the following strategy for taking tests, you will improve your chances for success.
______ Preview the whole test, noting which parts hardest or longest items.
______ Allow you enough time to answer the hardest or longest items.
Arrange the supporting details for each of the main points that follow according to order of
importance, starting with least important. Indicate the sequence of ideas by writing the number in the
blank at the left. In some cases, more than one order is possible. Choose an order that makes sense to
you.
Example
__5___ I might get fired because I’ve been out several times recently.
_____ Non smoking sections aren’t enough since the smoke always floats into them.
__1___ Smoking at the end of a meal is and important part of overall dining pleasure.
__2___ Smokers pay as much to eat as nonsmokers, so why should nonsmokers get referred treatments?
To revise your writing, you will need to reread it carefully with an objective and critical eye. You
may need to read what you have written several times before deciding what changes would improve
it. Remember to consider your audience and your purpose and focus on three areas:- unity
- detail and
- Coherence
Without even being aware of it, as the writer of the paragraph did with the underline sentences.
- Even if you have expressed all of your points and arranged them in a logical order your writing may
still seen choppy and your ideas may be hard to follow.
- Defn. Coherence in writing means that all your point and details connect to form a whole. In other
words, even when the points and details are assembled in an order that makes sense, they still need
“glue” to connect them.
- Coherence in writing in writing helps readers see how one point leads to another a piece of writing
that lacks coherence can sound like a string of unrelated statements.
- Individual ideas should be so well arranged and connected that they leave readers with a clear
overall impression. Two major devices can help you make sure that your writing is coherent.
1. Transitional words, phrases, and sentences (connections that link one idea
to another)
2. Repeated key words-(Words related to your main point that link repeated throughout the
paragraph or essay.
-Here are two paragraphs, one that is not coherent and one that is, Read them and notice how much
easier the second paragraph is to follow.
Both paragraphs make the same points. But the transition (underlined) and repeated key words
(circled) in the second paragraph help “hold it together”
Not Coherent
- It is not difficult to get organized-it makes discipline to stay organized. All you need to do is follow
a few simple ideas. You must decide what your priorities are and do these tasks first. You should ask
yourself everyday, what is the most important goal I have to accomplish? Make the time to do it. You
need a personal system for keeping track if time things. Making lists, keeping records, and using a
schedule help you remember what you need to do. It’s a good idea not to let belongings and
obligations. Stack up. Get rid of professions you don’t need put items away every time you use them.
And don’t take on more responsibilities than you can handle. It isn’t a mastery; isn’t just good sense.
Coherent
Add Transitions
Defn: Transitions are words, phrases, and sentences that connect your ideas to that your Writing
moves smoothly from one point to the next. Use transitions when moving from one main support
point to another. Also use them wherever you want to improve the flow of your writing. Following
are some common transitional words and phrases these are not the only transition, however.
A- Space
- Below -near - to the right
Above -beside -next to - to the side
a cross - beyond -opposite - under
at the bottom - farther/Farther -over - where
at the top - inside - to the left - behind
B. Time
- Eventually - Meanwhile - Soon
After - finally - next - then
as - first - now - when
at last - last - second - while
before -later -since
C. Importance
- Infect - more important
- Above all - in particular - most important
- Best - most - worst
- Especially
Example – For example - for one thins
- For instance - one reason
AND - additionally -and - as well as - in addition
- Also - another - farther more - more over
But - although - in contrast - nevertheless - still
- But -instead - on the other hand -still
So - as a result - finally - therefore
-Because - So
Practice – Adding transitions
Example:-
Bishop Jacques Gailot, a French priest, has found a new way to spread the world. In 1995, Gailot
was removed from his church by decree of the pope. After the people learned that Gailot was
promoting Condom use to curb the Sahara Desert when he arrived at his new mission, he found that it
no longer existed Instead of giving up, Gailot though about how he could reach people. Finally he
came up with the idea of a virtual diocese that could run on the Internet Now his web page, partania,
is set up and is open to people all over the world. Gailot is the first cyberspace priest, reaching
potentially millions of people over the world wide computer network.
The advertisement was very effective. At the top of the page was the headline, WOW!
_____________ Were two pictures. On the left was a black -and- white photograph of and old-
fashioned kitchen with a couple of cabinets, a small table in the corner, and a beat-up old refrigerator.
