! Note a sentence is a meaningful group of words with a period, exclamation point, question
marks at the end. However, no definition of the sentence is likely to help you much in writing
you learn sentence structures by speaking, listening, reading and writing, more than by
studying types of sentences. A sentence has two parts subject and predicate.
A. The subject of a sentence is what you make a statement or ask a question about. This is
usually a noun, or a pronoun like she, he, or who; but on occasions the subject can be
something else that substructures for a noun, like a clause or a phrase. Even a verb can be
a subject. In the sentence “Is” is a verb “the verb” “Is “is the subject of the sentence. In
the following two sentences the subjects are marked in bold.
1. The woman in the blue house by the river wrote usual sentences on the walls.
2. The weather condition of Adama town is very comfortable during summer
B. The predicate is the verb with its modifiers and complements. The predicate is what the
sentence says about the subject, most often, it is the action that goes in the sentence
In the following sentence the simple predicates are written in bold:
1. The theory was valid

1.2.Types of Sentences

7. The scientist knew tat her experiment would succeeded but she avoided publicity
units the final test was completed.
8. The young girl jumped under the covers when her uncle walked in wearing his gorilla
suit, and she refused to come out ____________

! Note that sentences are structurally classified into four types: simple, compound,
complex and compound complex.

1.2.1 Simple sentence

A sentence is “simple” as long as it contains one independent clause.
For example, Robsan laughed” is a simple” sentence. You can add modifiers like” big Jote
laughed loudly” or a prepositional phrase “Jute laughed at her” and the sentence still remains
simple.
In simple sentence, either subject or predicated can be compounded and the sentence remains
simple.
Example: 1. Merob and Robsan cried
2. Merob laughed and cried

independent clauses, each containing a subject and a predicate each describing an action
complete in itself. The clauses in the compound sentence are joined by connectives and, but,
or, nor, by a semicolon (i)

Basic Writing Skill (FLEn-1013)

A. Construct five similar sentences about what you saw or did since you joined in Rift
Valley University College
! Note: you have a complex rather than a compound sentence if one part of the sentences
depends on the other. The clause that depends up on the other for explanation or completion
is called the subordinate clause/ dependent clause.
‘Although the buyers.’ In short complex sentences consist of one independent clause (IC) and
at least one dependent clause (DC). However, the complex sentence provides further variety
and allows you to emphasize the relationship of ideas to others in the same sentence.
Complex sentences make a precise relationship among ideas; clauses introduced by such
relative pronouns as that, who, which (sometimes called relative clauses are usually
subordinate to a main clause; they depend on it and help to form complex sentences.
Examples 1. Does she remember the face of the woman who sold her bracelet?
2, The king executed the horse that had thrown him.
Other conjunctions like although, even though, after, if, since and when can introduce
subordinate clauses. However, each of these conjunctions has its own precise meaning. So
the writer needs to use each of them carefully.

1.2.4 Compound – complex sentences

So far you studied simple, compound, and complex sentences, what you guess are compound
complex sentences?
? Identify the main and add the subordinate clauses in the following sentences and say
whether they are compound complex or not
1. The police strike lasted a week, but no robberies occurred in that time.
2. Stamp collecting is fascinating bobby that may also be profitable.
3. Doctors are studying the direct that aggravates cancer and they hope to discover some

success than technical skills. Employers can (earn technical skills on the jobs and practice
them every day. But they need to bring well developed communication skills to the jobs they
need to be able to make themselves understood to colleagues, both in speech and in writing.
They need to be able to work cooperatively as part of a team Employers can’t take time to
teach communication skills, but without them an employee will have hard time.
When developing a topic sentence for your paragraph make sure it has some features

said to be coherent when there is smooth flow of idea from one sentence of the paragraph to
the next. In other words, every sentence in a paragraph needs to have a precise and logical
relationship with the sentences that proceed or follow it. Coherence helps the reader to follow
the tread of writer’s though. The coherence between sentences in a paragraph can be
achieved by using transitional words and phrases, by repeating key words and ideas, by using
pronouns and demonstrative adjectives and by using parallel grammatical structures. These
techniques are often used jointly in a paragraph or any written text.

A) Transitional words and phrases (conjunctions)

Using transitional words and phrases of various types is the common and the easiest way of
creating coherence. The transitional words and phrases can be grouped in various categories
based on the type of relationship they indicate. From your previous knowledge, list as many
transitional words or phrases as you can which signals the following types of relationships.
1. Addition of one ideal up on another: and, also, besides…..

My hometown is famous for several amazing natural features. First, it is noted for the
Wheaton River, which is very wide and beautiful. On either side of this river, which is 175
feet wide, are many willow trees, which have long branches that can move gracefully in the
wide. In autumn the leaves of these trees fall and cover the riverbanks like golden snow.
Second, on the other side of the town is Wheaton Hill. This is usually because it is very
steep.
Even though it is steep, climbing this hill is not dangerous, because there are some firm rocks
along the sides that can be used as stairs. There are no trees around this hill. So it stands
clearly against the sky and can be seen from many miles away. The third amazing feature is
the Big Old Tree. This tree stands two hundred feet tall and is probably about six hundred
years old. These three landmarks are truly amazing and make my hometown a famous place.
Exercise 11: underline the cohesive devices and indicate the type of relationship that the
following pairs of sentences (clauses) illustrate.
Example
1. There are several causes for frequent occurrence of war in Africa for instance;
maladministration or lack of democracy is the primary one.
Type of relationship between the clauses- exemplification
a) Rap music is still extraordinarily popular. For sure, it will maintain its hold on the young
people over the next decade.
b) There are so many warnings against smoking cigarette. Yet several people kept on smoking.
c) Kelbessa forgot watering the flowers in his backyard. Consequently many of them are wilting.
d) Our bodies are strengthened by the food that we digest. Similarly our mind can be
developed by what we understand.
e) Recently many popular magazines have addressed the topic of globalization. Thus it is
no longer an issue people are evading.

i) Some animals are often capable of learning tricks, but they are unable to pass there
acquired skills on to their offspring.
Exercise 1.
Rewrite the following paragraph by inserting the transitional words or phrases provided
below where they fit.
Equally attractive in contrast on the other hand
Another advantage furthermore often
After all before for example
For one thing for that money
Advertising a product on radio has many advantages over using television. (1). Radio rates
are much cheaper (2). A one time 60 second spot on local T.V can cost $750. (3). Advertisers
can purchase nine 30 second spots on radio. (4). There are low production costs for radio
advertising. (5). Television advertising often includes extra costs for model and voice over.
(6). Radio offers advertisers immediate scheduling. (7). The advertisement appear during the
same week a contract is signed (8). Television stations are frequently booked up months in
advance, so that it may be longtime. (9). An advertisement appears. (10). Radio gives
advertiser a greater opportunity to reach their potential buyers (11). Radio follow listeners
every where- in their homes, at work, and in their cars. (12). Television is popular, television
can not do that. (kolin,p-56).
Exercise 2:
Fill in the blank spaces in the following paragraph with the appropriate transitional words.
You can use the lists of transitional words in appendix A. Try to identify the nature of the
relationship between ideas in the sentences before choosing the transitional words.
The true Musician

(1). Plato believed that music played a strong part in a man’s education; he did not ignore
other areas of learning. Music, through rhythm and harmony, could bring grace to the soul
(2). A man educated in music could develop a true sense of judgment; (3). He would be
able to recognize quality in art and nature and could respond with praise for good things. (4).
A man who knew music could without having to think too long. Give blame to any bad
artistic works. (5). Any man who devoted his life only to music, risked the chance of
becoming too softened and soothed. (6). such a man would be a feeble warrior and of little
use to the Greeks. Someone who practiced gymnastics (7). Could feel him with pride and

Athletics made an essential part of the educated man. Plato also new that too much focus on
physical training could make man excessively violent and fierce (10). He might come to
hate philosophy and the art of persuasion in preference to battle.

b. Reporting Key Words and Ideas

Restating key word and ideas is another means of creating ties between sentences in a
paragraph. Key words help to link different parts of the paragraph for readers.
Exercise 14. Now read the following short paragraph and underline the key idea or word
repeated to create coherence.
Paragraph 1
Fringe benefits are an important part of recruiting and retaining qualified employees. In
highly competitive market, such benefits rather than salary may determine if a talented
professional accepts or decline a job. Traditionally, fringe benefits were limited to basic
hospital and surgical insurance and to pension plans. But today they extend to genital and
optical riders on company insurance policies. Other more lucrative fringe benefits include the
financial rewards companies offer loyal employees’ profit sharing options to buy stock at
reduced rates and generous bonuses for diligent sales activities.
Paragraph 2
A willingness to take risk is one of the most important qualities that lead to success in
business. A person who is willing to take risk is one who moves ahead in a new business
venture with confidence. However it is good to avoid taking unnecessary risks that may
collapse our business easily.

c). pronouns and demonstrative pronouns
Personal pronouns (he, she, they, his, her…) and demonstrative adjectives (this, these, that,
those) can help to tie sentences or ideas in a paragraph. However, to use these pronouns, their
antecedents (the noun to which the pronouns refer) must be mentioned in the proceeding
sentences or some where in the paragraph. Look how the sentences in the following
paragraph are interwoven by using pronouns.

Example
Paragraph 1
Haile Gebresillase is a world class athlete. He won several gold medals in 10 thousand
meters track competition.

 Parallel grammatical structure

Coherence can also be created by using similar grammatical constructions. Parallel structures
ensure the smooth flow of thought from one sentence to the next. Note the use of parallel
structure in the following paragraph.

Example
Orientation sessions accomplished four goals for trainees. First, they introduce trainees to
key personnel in accounting, data processing, maintenance and security., second, they give
trainees experience logging in to the data base system, selected an appropriate menu, editing
rough documents and getting off the system. Third, they explain to trainees the company
policies affecting the way supplies orders, used, stored. Fourth, they help trainees understand
their responsibilities in such sensitive areas as computer security and use.
In the above paragraph, the four sentence about the four goals start with same grammatical
structure (----- they introduce/ give/ explain/ help/ trainee---) there is also parallelism with in
the individual sentence: present participles (logging, selecting---) and past participle (ordered
used---) the transitional words first, second, third, fourth, conveys a sense of parallelism as
well as of sequence.
Note: coherence and discussed before, is among the compulsory qualities of a good
paragraph. Two or more of the four techniques discussed above are usually used
simultaneously to create coherence in a given paragraph. It is almost impossible to create
Copy© Rift Valley University Center for Distance Education Adama 23

Basic Writing Skill (FLEn-1013)

coherence in a paragraph by using only one of the above techniques. In short, a paragraph
must seem a whole not just a collection of incoherent/ unrelated individual sentences.
Exercise 16: read the following paragraphs and identify the dominant techniques used to
treat coherence in the paragraphs.

Paragraph 1
We all sat enjoying the evening. In was writing a book. In reading one. And Jerry was
working in the income tax. There was also soft music coming from the neighboring night
club almost the whole night.

Paragraph 2
In the mid-1970 the Minnesota Vikings were a very well-built team because of the draft and
some big trades. For example they picked up players like church foreman through the college
draft. But perhaps more importantly, they pulled off some coups, like the arkenton trade in
1973. Undoubtedly, the Vikings were the most evenly balanced team in professional football
in the mid 1970.

Paragraph 3
I had a freighted, slightly more common than the passenger set but still worth about s250 for
the whole set. The freight set consisted of five freight cars. A Hudson steam locomotive
completed the set.

Paragraph 4
One day when the last was still populated by giants, a young warrior and a beautiful girl fell
in love. They planned for the day when they could marry and have children. Unfortunately,
their people were at with a neighboring people, and the young man sleep. He never returned,
but she can still be seen lying down. She is waiting for her young.
Exercise 3

Basic Writing Skill (FLEn-1013)

Look at the following two versions of the same paragraph and answer the questions beneath
the paragraphs.

Paragraph 1
Your new Meglith Motors Diesel transport trucks costs more and offers more features. The
diesel engine is durable and you will enjoy its trouble free operation. The engine uses less
fuel while idling. And uses less fuel on the road. Diesel trucks stand up to years of wear and
have high resale value. You choose the right truck and the years will prove it.
Paragraph 2
Your new Megalith Motor diesel transport truck costs more, but it offers more feature too.
Since the diesel engine is durable. You will enjoy years of trouble free operation will use less
fuel both when idling and when on the move. Furthermore, because diesel trucks stand up to
years of wear. They have high resale value. The years will prove that you choose the right
truck.
1. How are the two paragraphs different
2. What kinds of sentences are used in the above paragraphs
3. Which of the paragraphs do you think interests the reader why
Note: variety in writing is mainly meant for the readers. The use of varied sentence type or
structure can help to make our paragraph more clear and avoid the possible monotony that
may destroy the attention of the readers while reading our text. If sentence of the same
pattern i.e. subject+ verb, our writing will be dull and may put the reader to sleep. For
example in paragraph 1 above, almost all sentences used are compound and only the
conjunction “and” is used to join the sentence structures and paragraph dull. However in
paragraph 2 different types of sentence structures and conjunction are used to add variety to
the paragraph. The ability of produce texts or paragraphs with good variety usually is gained
though continuous practice. However the following techniques may help to put interesting
variations in to our written work.
a). varying sentence beginnings
We can begin the sentences in our paragraph by prepositional phrases, participles, participial
phrases or others instead of subjects. Look at the beginnings of the following sentences
Copy© Rift Valley University Center for Distance Education Adama 26

Basic Writing Skill (FLEn-1013)

adapted from (Marsen, 2003).
Example
1. A). the cost of construction materials has doubled and most of the contractors withdrew
their contract agreement.
2. Because of the increasing cost of construction materials, most of the constructors
withdrew their contract.
3. A) The students became dizzy after attending a three hours history lecture.
4. B). having attending a three hours history lecture, the students became dizzy.
5. A). business organizations are usually established after careful planning in order to avoid
early death of the organizational.
B). In order to avoid the early death of an organization, business organizations are
usually established after careful planning.
b). varying sentence length and type
We can vary the length of the sentences in our paragraph by combining them through
them through coordination or subordination techniques. Combining sentences can
help us to have various sentence types (simple, compound, complex) in our
paragraphs. Again we need to take care of excessive use of any one of these sentence
type in a paragraph.
c). varying rhetorical structure a sentence
Rhetorical structure is the way information is arranged in a sentence or paragraph.
Look at the following example sentences.
Example
1. A). the students started hunger strike after repeated complaints to the dean’s
and the present office.
B).After repeated complaints to the dean’s and the president office the students
started hunger strike.
2. A). the instructor left us confide by rushing through the difficult material for
two hours non-stop lecture.
B). rushing through the difficult material for two hours non-stop lecturer, the
instructor left us confused.

Basic Writing Skill (FLEn-1013)

Among above example sentences labeled A) are loose sentences where as sentences labeled
‘b’ are periodic. Loose sentences begin with subject and bring important idea to wards the
beginning where as periodic sentences hold up the main idea up to the last word or phrase.
In addition to the above techniques, we can create variety in our text by inverting sentence
and varying the position of dependent clauses and main clauses.
Exercise 4:
The following paragraphs lack variety. They employ either short sentences or long sentences
all the way through. Rewrite the paragraph by adding variety in to them by using the
techniques discussed above.
Paragraph 1
Outer-space films are becoming popular. One such film is Alien is set in the twenty-first
century. Alien tells about a crew of seven Americans. The Americans are roaming the
universe. They are looking are for fuel. They are towing a fuel refinery. There is a computer
aboard in the space sing. The computer is programmed to record unusual signals from outer
space. The crew is supposed to investigate any signals. The signals may be from
extraterrestrial beings. One signal they investigate is from the Alien. The Alien is absolutely
evil. The alien is designed to consume anything is constructs. Alien is a classic terror movie.
Paragraph 2
Armadillos which live primarily in south western states like Texas are strange animals that
most people have never seen. Related to porcupines, armadillos have silvery scales instead of
quills which overlap like armor. However this armor does not protect armadillos from gars;
flat little former armadillos can often be found on rural Texas read.

2.3.4 Completeness
Completeness is another quality of a good paragraph. But what do we mean by
completeness? What does a complete paragraph have? How do write a paragraph of any
given pieces of text complete?
Examine the following paragraph and do the next exercise.
Paragraph 1
Farmers can turn their crops and farms wastes into, cost-effective fuels. Much grown on the
farm can be covered to energy. This energy can have many uses and save farmers a lot of

money in operating expenses.
What questions come to your mind as your read the paragraph?
1.
2.
3.
Now read the other version of the same paragraph and check if your questions are answered well.
Farm crops and wastes can be turned in to fuel to save farmers money on their operating
costs. Alcohol can be distilled from grain, sugar beets, and potatoes –even from blighted
crops. Converted to gasohol (90 percent gasoline, 10 percent alcohol). This alcohol can be
used to turn such farm equipment as irrigation pumps, feed grinders and tractors, similarly
through biomass digestion system, farmers can produce methane from animal or crop
wastes. This methane can be an important sources of the natural gas used for heating and
cooking. Finally, cellulose pellets, derived from plant materials are an important solid fuel
that can save farmers money in heating barns.
Note: in writing, the write must not forget that he is sending a message for a reader who is
not around and ask for further explanation if things are not clear. Besides, the reader may not
have the same idea with what the writer has in mind. So the writer must supply the reader
with all the necessary details that clarify, analyze, support defends or incomplete texts if they
have no enough knowledge or information about the topic they write. Incomplete may come
to the mind of a reader who reads the above incomplete paragraph about farmers: what
specific materials can be used to produce energy how what are the uses of this new energy
Exercise 5
The following paragraph does not contain complete details; rewrite it by supplying the
remaining details. You may obtain the details from partners or sources. First write down as
many questions as you can that come to your mind when you read the paragraphs.
Paragraph 1
Smoking cigarette can cause several problems to the smokers and other peoples around. It is
dangerous practice for human being although smokers claim that they get some benefits from
smoking. Warnings against smoking are announced several times. Yet there are new smokers
emerging every day. In short cigarettes are hazardous.

2.4 Steps in Writing Paragraph
In the preceding sections of this chapter, you have seen what a paragraph is its major
components and the qualities that a good paragraph should possess. This will help you a lot
in the activities you are going to carry out in this section. In this section, you will learn how
to produce coherent paragraphs by following the correct procedures.
 Brainstorming
1. What are the major steps that a beginner writer should go through to write a
paragraph
2. Compare your answer with that of your friends and try to come up with commonly
agreed steps.
Exercise 6:
From the following lists of titles, choose the ones that are appropriate to write a
paragraph up on.
a) My memorable day h) Qualities of a good teacher
b) Agriculture in Ethiopia i) The history of women
c) Democracy j) Problems of tabor college
d) Environmental prolusion k) How to prepare shiro wot
e) Students’ life in university l) Reasons for divorce in
f) Learning to drive a car Ethiopia
g) Causes of juvenile m) A rolling stone gathers no
delinquency in Adama moss
Explain the problems with some of the topics above to write paragraphs up on
What do you think a good paragraph topic should look like?
! Note: although there could be little variation among individuals concerning the steps in
paragraph writing the following are considered as common procedure: formulating topic
sentences, creating details, developing the details, ordering the details and writing the first

Basic Writing Skill (FLEn-1013)

draft, editing and writing the final version. Obviously, all these steps come after choosing
appropriate topic or title for the paragraph we are going to produce. A good paragraph topic
is single, specific, supportable/ expandable and significant.

 Creating topic sentences

In writing paragraph, it is usually advisable to start from topic sentences. Topic sentences, as
stead before, is a general statement or opinion about an issue, person animal, that is being
discussed in the paragraph, Topic sentence.
1. Introduce the topic immediately
2. Helps to decide what to say about the topic
3. Tells the main idea of the paragraph.
4. Helps to restrict the details to be included
5. Forecasts the kind of information readers can expect in the body of the paragraph
Exercise 21: look at the following pairs of sentences which belong to the same paragraph.
Which one of them can be topic sentence (TS) and which one is supporting sentences (SS).
Write your answers in the space given. Number one is done as an example for you.
1. A). early marriage has several problems (TS).
b). early marriage can lead to divorce (SS).
2. A). president Mandela brought peace and democracy in South Africa.
b). some Africa leaders has done good things for their country.
3. The first step in choosing a best wife is attraction towards the lady.
b). choosing a best wife may involve several steps.
4. Radiation can be harmful to pregnant woman.
b). one effect of radiation on unborn children is brain damage.
Exercise 22: create your topic sentence for the following paragraph topics. Then compare
your answers with your partners and improve your topic sentences.
1. Qualities of a good teacher

2. Alcoholism

3. Learning to drive

4. Causes of environmental pollution

5. Making traditional Ethiopian coffee

6. Problems of freshman students

7. How to use public phone

Exercise 23: look at the following topic sentences and identify their weaknesses.

3. The new statically package for the social sciences (SPSS) computer program
improved the way we d research in social English.
4. Jonathan has got an ‘A’ in sophomore English.
5. When it is heat in hundred degrees centigrade, water evaporates.
6. My neighbor’s dog behaves very strangely when its master arrives.
7. Registration this semester is very much confusing.
8. Green plants produce their food.
Note: topic sentences shouldn’t be too broad (1,2 above) for this will create problems to
focus on specific topics. It shouldn’t be too specific either for these will creat problems
developing the paragraph (sentences, 3, 4, 5, above). A topic sentence should show opinions
or assertion (6,7) rather than scientifically proven facts like (5,8). 2.5.2. Creating details
In paragraph writing details come next to designing the topic sentences. Details are major
points to be included in the paragraph for the purpose of explaining, confirming or providing
disproving or supporting the assertions made in the topic sentences. Supporting details are
first put in the form of shop list and then developed into supporting sentences. To create
supporting details, it is good to ask ourselves some basic questions about the topic we are
writing because details are meant to answer sever questions about the topic sentence.
Some of these questions could be
a) What kind of d) What are the main parts and
b) How is ‘S’ made kinds of ‘S’
c) How does ‘S’ work e) What are the main functions of
‘S’

Copy© Rift Valley University Center for Distance Education Adama 32

f) What are the most important h) What are the
characteristics of ‘S’ advantages/disadvantages of
g) What are the causes and effects ‘S’
of ‘S’ i) Why or what are the reasons
for against ‘S’

Exercise 7:
Look at the following topic and their details and decide on the type of question (from the lists
above) that the details are meant to answer. Then design topic sentence for the given details
and write a paragraph about the topics.
1. Problems of alcoholism
- Economic crisis - Crime
- Health problem - Family break down
- Social disapproval - Death
2. Learning to drives a car
- Studying the manual - Obtaining permit

 Developing the details

When we write a paragraph, we do not simply list the short details can after the other by
using the conjunction like ‘and’ commas. We must develop or expand them by adding the
necessary details.
Read the following paragraph and tell your partner how it sounds to you or the problem you
observe.
Alcoholism
Alcoholism can cause several problems to human being. These are economic crisis health
problem, social disapproval, crime, family breakdown and death. Therefore it is not good to
drink too much alcohol.
Note: although several details are staffed in the above paragraph is not well developed. The
paragraph doesn’t explain why or how alcoholism causes the above problems. There should
be enough explanations or clarifications. Details can be developed or expanded by using the
following methods.
a. Sensory details- information that we obtain through or sense organs. (from what you’ve
heard, seer.
Copy© Rift Valley University Center for Distance Education Adama 35

Basic Writing Skill (FLEn-1013)

b. Exemplification- adding specific details that clarify the general idea.
e.g. smoking can cause heath problems such as tooth decay, lung cancer….
c. Facts and statistical figures and other descriptive details
e.g. In Africa, most of the people live in the country side. In Ethiopia for
example, 85 percent of the people are farmers who live in the rural areas.
d. . incidents/ stories or anecdotes – these
e.g. chala likes doing miracles. Once while we were driving home, he runs out
of fuel. Then……
Exercise 10:
Rewrite the above paragraph about alcoholism developing each detail by using the
above mentioned techniques.

 Ordering the details and writing the first draft

Paragraph details can be ordered in various patterns based on the nature or the topic and the
purpose of your paragraph. The following are the major patterns or sequences: topical or
random, chronological, spatial and logical.
A- Topical order (random order)
This pattern of oriented details is used when the writer has several points to be included. In
this case, the writer has the right to decide on the order of presentation for the details, but
she/he is expected to put related details closer to each other in the paragraph. This is the most
widely used technique of ordering details.
Exercise 11
Look at the following paragraph and examine how the details are organized and answer
the questions beneath it.
Paragraph 1 a good citizen is expected to have the following qualities. First of all he should
respect the rights of others. By doing this, he can get respect in return and thus mentally
satisfied. Besides, a good citizen ought to be governed by social norms and the rues and
regulations of his country as well as the institution he/she is working in. working hard is also
among the qualities of a good citizen. A citizen who works hard is always happy and

Basic Writing Skill (FLEn-1013)

respected. As a good citizen, one is also expected to maintain his health and strength for
these are crucial things in one’s life.
1. Underline the conjunctions in the above paragraph.
2. What types are they list some more conjunctions that could be used in similar occasions?
3. Random pattern of paragraph organization is sometimes difficult to recognize. One clue
to identify this pattern is the type of conjunction used to order the details. These are
conjunctions used for adding new ideas up on the other; also, besides, furthermore… the
other clues are words such as for example, for instance…
Exercise 29: write coherent paragraph about the following topic you can arrange the
details randomly. Qualities of a good teacher
1. Causes of divorce in Ethiopia
2. The uses of water
b. chronological sequence
This pattern of ordering details is used to arrange events in the time order in which they
occur. The details in this type of paragraph answers questions such as ‘what happens first’
and then what happens last now read through the following paragraph and examine how the
details are arranged.
Hanging Wallpaper
Hanging wall paper is not difficult. The first step is to select your pattern. You want to be
certain that it does not clash with your floor design. After you have made your selection and
it has been delivered to you. You will have together the tools you will need for hanging. For
pre pasted paper, you will need a sponge, scissors, a ruler an edge roller and an edge cutter.
Next you should be sure you have a large bucket or bathtub filled with water for dipping the
paper. You will also need a large table on which you can the paper sizes once you have
gathered your materials. You can finally begin the paper starting with an edge of a door and
working your way around a room until all the areas have been covered.
1. What types of conjunctions are used dominantly in the above paragraph
2. Can you list some other conjunctions that can be used for similar purposes
3. List the events in the above paragraph in their sequence of occurrence.
Chronological pattern also called time pattern is used when we write a paragraph that tells
how something happens (ed). How something works or how something is done or made, to

Basic Writing Skill (FLEn-1013)

analyze how a certain problem is developed, to give instructions on how to operate
something.
Exercise 12:
Write a coherent paragraph on the following topics. Use mainly chronological
sequencing to order your details.
1. Learning to drive a car
2. The water cycle
3. Digestion
c. spatial sequence
we use this kind of sequencing details to help readers visualize what an object looks like or
how objects are located or put in places. This type of arrangement helps to describe an object
or a scene by going from one part of it to the other (top-bottom, inside-outside, front-back,
left-right or right-left). Spatial pattern is used to write descriptive paragraphs.
Rea through the following adapted paragraph and examine how the details are arranged.
As you enter the library, you are greeted by paintings on each side of the door. The painting
on the right is of the town’s high school, and on the left is a water color of the town’s city

whose information usually disappears in about one second unless the information has been
transferred to another memory system. The second kind of memory is the short term

information there disappears in about 30 seconds. This memory generally holds up your short

! Note: It is true that one can learn best by being exposed to errors or mistakes committed by
others’. So during edition, it is good to encourage students to work in pairs and groups.
Editing should be done in steps since it is difficult to avoid all errors at a time.
First edit for those errors that can distort the meaning of the text. These are fragments, run-
on, misplaced modifiers, agreement errors (subject/verb, noun/pronoun). Secondly, edit for
faulty parallelism, wrong word forms or wrong word orders and article problems.
Punctuation and capitalization errors can be edited towards the end.

emotion. In other words, descriptions are the means of creating the images of something or
somebody in the readers’ mind or help them visualize. In descriptive writing we use
adjectives related on our sense of small, sight, touch, hearing and taste. Descriptive writing is
generally grouped in to two: imaginative and technical.

the sense of the reader and evoke some sort of emotional feeling. Imaginative description is
filled with the writer’s personality and opinions. On the other hand technical description
present factual information in objective language. This type of description is meant to draw
the picture of the subject in the readers mind without attempting to appeal to the emotion
feelings of the reader. Technical description is mainly meant to answer the following three

uncommon to come across a paragraph which serves tow or there purposes yet with one

CHAPTER THREE
ESSAY WRITING
Introduction
In the preceding chapter you have learnt how to write complete, and a well unified
paragraphs of various types. However, at university level, students are usually asked to write
texts longer than paragraphs when they write reports and answer essay type question on
exams. Thus, in this chapter, you work on the higher level of writing skills: essay writing.
The chapter contains four main points. The first part is about the definitions and components
of an essay through techniques such as listing, clustering, cubing and journalistic questions.
In the final section the four types of essay exposition, argumentation, description and
narration are discussed and exemplified.
Objectives
At the end of this chapter, you will be able to:
 Define essay
 Identify the component parts of an essay
 Select the subject of your essay
 Define the purpose of your essay
 Identify the audience of your essay
 Identify different types of essays
 Write sample essays for each type of essays mentioned in the chapter

3.1 Definition and component/part of an Essay

Discuss the following question with your partner
1. What is an essay? Can you guess what component parts it has? Discuss your answers
with your partner.
2. What similarities and differences have you recognized between a paragraph and an essay?
An essay is a short non- fiction composition and organization of which are guided by a single
controlling idea, the thesis statement. Generally, academic essays have a similar format. The
basic structure of each paragraph in an essay is the same as that which we have already
studied. In addition, the paragraphs in the academic essay can be divided into three basic

Basic Writing Skill (FLEn-1013)

kinds (1) the introductory paragraph, (2) the body paragraphs, and (3) the concluding
paragraph.
1. The introductory paragraph
The first paragraph of the academic essay is the one that is usually the most different from
the basic paragraph that we have studied in chapter two. In chapter two, we saw that a basic,
and these usually, followed by a concluding sentence.
In the multi- paragraph academic essay, however, the structure is a little deferent. Like the
basic paragraph, the introductory paragraph opens with a very general statement about the
topic, and is often followed by some supporting examples, but the paragraph then finishes
with a narrow statement about the topic. This narrow statement is called the thesis statement.
Here is a short example of an introductory paragraph of an academic essay with its thesis
statement:
Throughout human history, the physical universe has often presented dangers to explorers.
For example, when primitive humans left their tribal villages to search for food and water,
they risked death or injury from dangerous animals. Later, when people sailed the oceans in
search of new lands for settlement or trade, many died in terrible storms. Similarly, the ocean
of outer space has many dangers, but it also has several unique challenges for explorers.
Notice haw the first sentence, Throughout human history, the physical universe ha often
presented damagers the explorers, is a very general statement about the topic, which are
dangers in exploration, The next two sentences given some supporting examples of this
initial sentence. However the third sentence of the paragraph

2. Cubing – still another way to generate ideas is cubing. Imagine a six – sided cube that
looks smoothing like this;

4. Analyze it
Describe it
2. 5. Argue

or For or
contrast Against
it 3. Free associate it 6. Apply or use it.

Basic Writing Skill (FLEn-1013)

Mentally, roll your subject around the cube and free write the answers to such questions as
the following.
 Describe it: What does your subject look like? What size. Colors and textures does it
have? Any special features worth noting?
 Comparing or contrasting it: What is your subject similar to? What is your subject
different from? In what ways?
 Free associate it: what does this subject remind you of? What does it conjure up?
 Analyze it: how does it work? How are the parts connected? What is its significance?
 Argue for or against it – What arguments can you make for or against your subject?
What advantages or disadvantages does it have? What changes or improvements
should be made?
 Apply it: what are the uses of your subject?
4. Journalist’s Questions
Asking yourself set questions about your topic and writing out the answers can help you look
at your topic objectively and see fresh possibilities in it.
Asking these questions can also provide some structure to the development of ideas.
These questions are:
Who was involved?
What happened and what were the results?
When did it happen?
Where did it happen?
Why did it happen?
How did it happen?
Not that these questions are useful in generating ideas for an essay topic, especially if your
purpose is to entertain or to explain by telling a story from your experience or from history or
by examining causes and effects

3.2 Types of Essay

You have already learned how to categorize paragraphs in to different types based on the
purpose for which they are written and the patterns of organizing their details. The same is
true for essay. The difference between the two lies only on the length of their different
component parts. Although, like that of paragraphs, essays can be grouped as expository,
descriptive, argumentative, and narrative, in reality, it is difficult to find any one mode in a
pure form. Almost all essays are combinations of two or more modes. It would be virtually
impossible. For example, to write a narrative story without including some elements of
description or write argumentative essay without including some elements from expository
essay. However, by determining a writer’s main purpose, we can usually identify an essay or
prose as primarily explosion, argumentation, description or narration.

Basic Writing Skill (FLEn-1013)

3.2.1 Expository
Like that of expository paragraph, the primary purpose of expository essay is giving
information. For example, much of your own university work can be classified as exposition:
book reports, laboratory and business reports, and most essay exams to cite only a few of the
possibilities.
While all expository writings do present information, a good expository essay is more than a
collection of facts, figures, and details. First, each essay should contain a thesis statement
announcing the writer’s purpose and position. Then the essay should be organized so that the
body paragraphs explain and support that thesis. In this essay the write says, in effect, here
are the facts as I see them.
There are various ways to organize an expository essay, depending on your purpose. The
most common patterns of organization include development by example, process analysis,
comparison and contrast, definition, classification, and causal analysis.

Read through the following model of expository essays and examine how their details are
developed. Then answer the questions given below the essays.
Model 1
Even though other kinds of music are more popular, classical music will have a following. It
offers richness, diversity, and sheer beauty that cannot be matched by other
Classical music means music of the highest quality created by European artists of the first
rank such as Mozart, bach, Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, and Schubert. Most classical music was
composed before the twentieth century.
Its following today consists of people in every part of the world, especially the cities. They
are usually better educated upper – class men and women who have had the opportunity to
study different types of music and have acquired developed musical tastes. They do not
necessarily dislike modem music, but they feel a strong preference for classical music.
Other types of music have shown a wide spread growth from the late ninetieths and early
twenties centuries in to our own time. Classical music has held on to its following
nevertheless. Concerts, classical music clubs, and sales of classical music records are
evidences of this continuing interest.

Copy© Rift Valley University Center for Distance Education Adama 72

Basic Writing Skill (FLEn-1013)

The needs of those who can appreciate classical music should therefore continue to be met,
now and in the future. Programming staffs of television and radio stations, recording artists,
and concert musicians should continue to supply much music for their audiences. School
systems should continue to expose students to classical music through music courses and
programs for school orchestras, choruses, and bands. It is important to familiarize children at
all grade levels with classical music while they are still young and impressionable.
Model 2
Since the middle of this century, women around the world have been seeking greater
independence and recognition. No longer content with their traditional roles as house wives
and mothers, women have joined to create the so called “women’s liberation movement
“While the forces behind this international movement vary from culture to culture and from
individual to individual, the basic causes in the United States can be traced to three events:
the development of effective birth control methods, the invention of labor saving devices for
the home and the advent of World War II.
The first cause of the liberation of women was the development of effective birth control
methods. Freeing women from the endless cycles of child bearing and rearing. As a result of
having a choice as to when and if to bear children. Women acquired the freedom and the time
to pursue interests outside of the home. Because of the development of birth control, women
could delay having children or avoid having them all together; consequently, women had the
opportunity to acquire an education and or pursue a career. The second event was the
development of mechanized labor saving devices for the home, resulting in more leisure time
and freedom for women. For example fifty years ago a housewife spent an average of twelve
to fourteen hours per day doing housework. Due to the invention of machines such as
vacuum cleaner, washing machines and dish washers, a housewife can not take care of her
daily housework in about five hours.
The third event is that at least in the United States, gave impetus to the liberation of woman
was World war II. During the war, most men were serving in the military. Consequently,
women had to fill the vacancies in the labor force. Women by the thousands went to work in
the factories and even took over businesses for their absent husbands. This was a great
change for the majority of American women, for they discovered that they could weld aero

planes and manage a business as well as change in society and the effects of this change
being felt at all levels: in the family, in business, and in government.
One of the biggest effects of the greater independence of women is being felt in the home.
The traditional husband wife relationship is undergoing radical transformation because so
many women are working men are learning to share the household tasks of cooking,
cleaning, and even caring for children. In some families, there has been complete reversal of
the traditional roles the husband stays at home while the wife earns the families income. It
should be pointed out however. That this is the exception not the rule. In most families in the
United States. The husband still earns most of the money and the wife still does most of the
housework.
The effects of women liberation are being felt not only in the homes, but also on the jobs.
More and more Women are working and they are demanding equal salaries and equally
responsible positions. It is not uncommon for a woman to be the president of a corporation
these days. Many businesses encourage women to advance to high management positions,
every year; the nation’s schools produce more women doctors, lawyers and accountants.
Politics and government are still other areas that are feeling the effects of the women’s
movement. Although the US doesn’t appear ready to accept a women president, as some
countries of the world have women are being elected to public office in increasing numbers.
The US currently has three women governors which is the highest office in the states. A few
years ago, this would have been unthinkable. Furthermore, the increasing political power of
women has resulted in the proposal of an amendment to the US constitution, called the Equal
Rights Amendment, which will give women complete equality with men by law if passed..
In conclusion, women in the US are acquiring greater independence, which is causing
sweeping changes, in society at home at work and in politics. While men may not be created
the conditions leading to the liberation of women men made war male scientists developed
birth control and business men earned a lot of money selling vacuum cleaners and dish
washers.
Model 3
These days, chewing chat has become a common practice among many Ethiopians living in
different parts of the country. In some areas people chewing chat has been considered as a
component part of the culture of the society. However, the researches so far conducted in the
Copy© Rift Valley University Center for Distance Education Adama 74

Basic Writing Skill (FLEn-1013)

area and the practical experiences of the users indicate that chat can cause several bad effects
on human being among which economic crisis, health problems and social and family crisis
are the major ones.
First of all, chat can lead to sever economic crisis. This is especially true for those chain
chewers living in big towns. These addicts spend twenty to forty ETP for buying chat almost
every day. This requires them to shift the budgets that they have allocated for other basic
necessities to buying chat. As a result they suffer from big economic crisis
Secondly, chewing chat leads to various health problems. For instance some chain chewers
of chat don’t have good appetite for food. When they chew chat without eating food, they
will be exposed to gastric and severe dehydration. Chewing chat can also cause tooth decay
especially if the chewers use sugar. Chat can also lead to mental depression.
Thirdly chat can lead the chewers to several social crises. One aspect of this problem is that
people after chewing chat develop overconfidence and start to perform dangerous and
unethical activities. For example when the chewers are highly stimulated by the chat, they
may go for unsafe sex. Again some addicts become naughty and start to quarrel with people
around them if they don’t get chat at the right time. Some of them also borrow money from
friends to buy chat and return it. To secure money for the chat some even go to the extent of
stealing others money. This leads them to social isolations.
Chat can also sometimes lead to family breakdown. Some addicts give more attention for
their chat by forgetting their family and fulfilling their demands. Besides, chewing chat
weakens the sexual feelings of some chewers. These lead to regular conflicts which end up in
family disintegration.
In short chat is doing several harms to many people’s living in different parts of our country
regardless of their age levels and sex. Therefore the government should take immediate
measures to resolve the problem by educating the public about the dangers of chewing chat.

Model 4
Writing an academic essay is one of the common practices of university students. However,
most of them find this task very challenging and tiresome mainly because they hardly know
the procedures they have to go through. One needs to go through the following six stages in
order to produce a good academic essay.
The first stage is called private tutorial stage. At this stage students discuss the task and the
topics with their instructors so that they can get clear information about what to include or
focus on in their essays. The students should also get lists of useful reading arterials such as
books and articles which help them get the necessary input for their essays.
The second stage is conducting suitable research. This is the stage at which students read
various literatures on their topic and take relevant notes. Besides, students should gather the
necessary data for their essay by distributing questionnaires and conducting interviews with
those people who have expertise in the area. This may help the students to get the first hand
information.
Writing the first draft is what should come as the third stage of writing an academic essay.
Before writing the first draft, it is necessary to first to first organize the content of the essay
and produce a bried outline. Next, the draft is written in an acceptable formal academic style
and checked for appropriate language.
Stage four is another tutorial or study group discussion stage. During this time students
discuss with their friends or other person on the first draft of their essay and try to identify
the problem areas they also ask for tureer ideas suggestions and note down all the
suggestions that can help them improve their draft.
At stage five students go back to their sources of information and to further readings. Using
the suggestions and comments from stage foyr above, the students write the second draft of
the essay. Once the writing the second draft is completed all quotations should be checked
for errors.
The sixth stage consists writing the final draft of the essay. This stage involves various
activities. For example a careful spell check is required before adding a title page and a
bibliography. The essay should then be submitted before the dead line for completion.
Discussion Questions

Basic Writing Skill (FLEn-1013)

1. What is the possible title of the essay?
2. Which sentence its the thesis statement of the essay?
3. What is the major purpose of the above essay?
4. How did the writer conclude his essay?
Not that an informative process tell the reader how something is or was made or done or how
something works. It describes the step by which someone other than the reader does or makes
something (or how something was made or done in the past). For example, how a television
show is produced, how scientists discovered polio vaccine, etc.
3.2.2 Exposition through Definition
What is this thing called love?
A wise man once said that love is a wonderful thing. Although this statement leaves sparse
room for argument, it does little to define what love is beyond the vague realm of wonderful.
It is my duty as a deyout romantic to embark upon the seemingly difficult task of defining
love by looking at the history, explaining what love is not, and examining the uses of love
and the results of that usage.
Until we get the answers .I think we had better keep on building power plant and growing
food with the help of fertilizers and such insect –controlling chemicals as we now have the
naks are well known, thanks to the environmentalists. If they had not created a wider spread
public awareness of the ecological crisis, we wouldn’t stand a chance. But such awareness by
itself is not enough. Flaming manifestos and prophecies of down are no longer much help,
and a search for escape goatees can only make matters worse. The time for sensations and
manifestos is about over. Now we need rigorous analysis, united effort and very hard work .
However avoid the following error in your conclusion
1- Mechanical ( restating the thesis word for word)
2- Introducing new point
3- Changing your stance ( Don’t soften your stance or offer apologies in your last

Exercise 2
The following essay has five paragraphs but the paragraphs are in a jumbled ( mixed
order, after reading the essay:
1- Re-arrange the paragraphs in the correct order
2- Identify the thesis statement
3- Identify the major sues discussed in each body paragraph
4- Identify the transitional devices used to link the ideas of the paragraphs.
Health problems also among the major problems that the victims face, since the virus mainly
attacks the immune system of their body. the victims can easily be affected by various
simple basis’s that could be cured by easily . Once they catch a disease, it takes longer for
memo to get over the disease.
Human beings by using their talent were able to control many epidemic diseases occurred at
different time in the past. However, HIV has remained the big challenge to the world these
days. No matter how millions of dollars are invited on it. Nobody has come up with a cure
for this yet. Many people in the world are still suffering from HIV related problems.

Economic problem is another major challenge the HIV victims face. The victims cannot
work for longer hours and earn enough money for they get tired very easily. What is more,
some organizations are not willing to employ the victims. As a result, they hardly afford to
buy medicine or proper diet that could prolong their life.
In general, HIV victims suffer from several problems related to the disease that usually make
their life short. The problems are more prevalent in developing countries like Ethiopia where
the victims hardly get counseling and life prolonging medicine.
One among the major problems that HIV victims face is social isolation. Due to lack of
awareness about the nature of the disease, people usually avoid the victims. They don’t like
to share things, even shake hands with the victims. Some people are also not willing to rent
house for the victims. Besides, the victims themselves feel inferior and want to stay alone
and attempt to take revenge on others by infecting others sometimes.

3.3 Writing an Essay

3.3.1 Pre- writing considerations
A Selecting a Topic
Discovering and limiting a topic or subject to write about or finding a way to make an
assigned subject of your own is one of the challenges that you encounter in writing an essay.
Sometimes an appropriate subject or a unique angle may come to you with little effort but
when this does not happen you can attempt one of the approaches given below:

Pursuing your interests and experiences

To discover an essay subject when your instructor may not have given you one to write on
review your own experiences: interests and curiosities. Look for a subject you already know
something about or have been wondering about
e.g Some issues at your university , hometown, environment , etc.
3.3.2 Keeping a journal – many writers record their thoughts and observations in a
journal, a diary that is concerned more with ideas than with day-to-day events. Many
journal keepers write every day: others make entries less regularly. Journals can provide
many ideas for writing.
3.3.3 Observing your surroundings – sometimes you can find a good subject for your
essay by looking around yourself , consciously .To get the most from observation you
should have pencil and paper handy for and sketches .

Copy© Rift Valley University Center for Distance Education Adama 79

Basic Writing Skill (FLEn-1013)

A. Reading – Mine information about your topic from newspapers. Magazines, and
books when you read don’t forget to take notes.
B. Limiting the subject – narrow your subject to a specific topic .
Example
Broad subject Specific topics
1- summer jobs 1a kind of summer jobs
for university students
1b How to find a summer job
2a Causes of water pollution
2. pollution 2b . preventing Air pollution

Exercise 4
Take three or four of the following general subjects ( broad subjects ) and make them
specific topic that can fll for an essay .
1- the environment 5- Science
2- University 6- Automobile safety
3- Sports in Ethiopia 7- relations between the sexes
4- Success 8 – Faming

C. Defining a Purpose
A writer’s purpose is his or chief reason for communicating something about a topic to a
particular audience purpose includes three elements of the writing situation –the writer, the
topic and the audience.
Purpose ties together the specific context in which the writer is working and the goal he/she
hopes to achieve. The purposes for writing can be to entertain readers, to express oneself to
describe something or somebody, to explain something to readers (exposition) and to
persuade readers to accept or act on ones opinion (argumentation).

Basic Writing Skill (FLEn-1013)

Exercise 5
For each of the following topics suggest he likely purpose (description, self expression
explanation, persuasion) and the possible audience to which the essay could be addressed.
1- Learning a foreign language in universities
2- Four kinds of rock music
3- The place where I feel most relaxed
4- Environmental pollution
5- How to find a trusty automobile mechanic
D. Identifying an Audience
Audience is often identified or implied in a writing assignment: when you write an editorial
for the student newspaper favoring expansion of the university health facilities your
audience is fellow students, who will be reading the paper for general information personal
interest: when you write a report on a physics experiment, your audience is your physics
instructor, who will be reading to evaluate your competence and see if you need help. If no
particular audience is specified or implied, then as with purpose , you are free to decide
whom you want to address ; your boss ? Your classmates? Those who drive cars?
Most writings for the academic disciplines such as literature, psychology, management
physics, automotive, manufacturing, etc are not addressed to a general audience but to a
specialized audience of practitioners of the discipline, represented by your instructor. So you
may be required to use formal languages and the appropriate vocabulary of the area.
E Generating Ideas
After you discovered and limited the subject determined the purpose and identified the
audience of your essay. The next task will be generating and organizing your ideas. Here are
some of the techniques that can assist you in generating for your essay. Practice each of them
1- Listing – try to jot ( write ) down whatever ideas that come to your head about your
topic For example , a quick list on “ Jogging ‘ might look like this :
Healthy races going too far
Shoes training going too fast
Fresh air warm –ups before running
Good for heart cool-downs after
Good for lungs no weight loss
Copy© Rift Valley University Center for Distance Education Adama 81

Basic Writing Skill (FLEn-1013)

2- Clustering – another excellent technique is clustering sometimes known as mapping
place your general subject in a circle in the middle of a blank sheet of paper and begin to
draw other lines and circles that radiate from the original subject cluster those ideas that
seem to fall together . At the end, see if a topic emerges from any of your groups of
ideas.
There’s No Excuse for Not Voting
Though every American citizen 18 years or older has the right to vote a large percentage of
Americans does not vote in recent presidential elections, about 55 percent of eligible voters
cast ballots. This low number compares with a voter turnout of at least 80 in many other
democratic countries people who do vote usually have excuses: their vote won’t a difference,
they don’t trust politicians, or they don’t have time to vote.
Those who argue that one vote doesn’t count might be surprised to find how often a few
votes have swayed an election. In the presidential elections of 1960, 1968, and 1967 the
outcome was determined by a margin of less than 3 percent. In some local elections, the
outcome hinges on a few hundred votes and one percentage point. One vote may not be seen
like much, but if hundreds of people take this attitude. The number of non voters becomes
significant.
Many people don’t vote because they distrust politicians. This line of reasoning misses the
point. There will be politicians whether we vote for them or not when we take part in the
process. We send a message to elected officials that we are watching them and that we expect
them to act our behalf: Our votes are a link between our behalf our wishes and the actions of
elected officials.
Some people claim they are too busy to vote. But this claim has little value. For the benefit of
those have a full work day polling places remain open for long hours in most states from 6 or
7 A.M to 9 P.M. polling places are usually within easy distance of people’s homes. Elderly or
disabled voters can usually rely on car pools run by local volunteers for transportation.
Voters who will be away during elections can even mail in absentee ballots. In addition, the
voting process itself takes only a few minutes. Finding the time to vote doesn’t call for that
great a sacrifice.
Voting is so crucial that we should all work to make this a country of voters. Our forbears
risked their lives to gain this precious right for us. People should view voting as not only just
Copy© Rift Valley University Center for Distance Education Adama 82

Basic Writing Skill (FLEn-1013)

a privilege but also as an obligation Voting is the part we play in maintaining a government
that works for the people .
Exercise 9
1- What is the thesis statement of the essay?
2- What are the people sentences of the body paragraphs?
Para 2-_________________________________________
Para 3_________________________________________
Para 4_________________________________________
3- Write similar essay as a writing assignment on one of the following topic
a/ sex Before Marriage is Good / Bad
b/ Abortion Should be/should not be legal
c/ Admitting female students with lower grades to universities is good /bad
Note: For developing and organizing an effective argumentative essay keep the following
suggestions in mind
1- Know why you hold your views- Once you’ve selected a topic for your argument
essay try writing down a list of the reasons or points that support your opinion on that
subject .
2- Anticipate opposing views- assume that there is more than one side an issue. To be
convincing you must be aware of your oppositions views on the subject and then
organize your essay to answer or counter those views. Your act of responding to those
arguments against your position will be called refuting the opposition: to refute “
means to prove false or wrong , “ and that ‘s what you will try to do to some of the
arguments of those who disagree with you .
3- Know and remember your audience –you need to decide what kinds of supporting
evidence will be most convincing to your particular readers. Ask yourself such
questions as; what do they already know about your topic? What information or terms
do they need to know to understand your point of view etc.
4- Decide which points of argument to include –don’t forget to include important and
convincing points of argument.
5- Organize your essay clearly:- Although there is no set of model of organization for
argumentative essays . there are two or more common patterns that you might use ( or
Copy© Rift Valley University Center for Distance Education Adama 83

Basic Writing Skill (FLEn-1013)

you might combine in some effective way
6- Support your position through examples, comparison or contrast m cause and effect
relationship, argue by definition, etc.
7- Offer evidence that effectively supports your claims – Your might profit from
including , when and where appropriate some of the following personal experiences
factual information from research statistics from current reliable sources charts ,
graphs or diagrams etc .

3.4 Descriptive
When you write descriptive essay, you try to create a word picture of persons, places,
objects and emotions using a careful selection of details to make an impression on your
reader. The key word here is “descriptive’’. Your goal in a descriptive piece of writing is
therefore to describe something, someone, or some place in a way that shows the readers
rather than tells. This is done by using lots of descriptive language and details.
Descriptive writing can be done in an essay format ( 5 paragraphs ) or even as a story or a poem .

Look at the following sample of descriptive essay of an old woman

If you every bumped in to my grandmother, you would probably say she was the perfect
picture of a mean, old, grouchy grandmother. However, really deep down, she is not that
way at all. You just have to get to know her.
Her name is Abebech. Her hair is gray with white steaks and is usually combed in to
braids. She always walks with a cane, which she carries for protection. You can rarely
understand what she is saying because she has very few teeth. When you have just a few
teeth, it is hard to get words out I guess you could say Abebech is a small framed woman.
She weights only sixty kilograms. But even though she is little, she is a woman who gets
around.
An important thing for Abebech is her routine of walking from the back of the house to
the front. Abebech makes this little journey at least five times daily. When she makes this
trip in the afternoon, she goes out the front door and sits on the porch she is stationed
there for the rest of the evening . As night falls, everyone comes out to greet a friend or

Copy© Rift Valley University Center for Distance Education Adama 84

Basic Writing Skill (FLEn-1013)

visit a neighbor. People who pass in front of Abebech’s porch know to speak to her. If
you don’t happen to speak, you get a big argument from her and a lot of name calling.
It is not good to do or say anything to offend Abebech . If you do, there is a guarantee
that you will not hear the end of it . Once when I was combining my hair, I accidentally
left my comb and brush on her dresses. When I remembered where I had left my
belongings.
I hastily went back to get them but when I got there, to my surprise, everything was on
the flour. There was a note on the dresser that read: Don’t every leave your mess on may
dresser again or your things won’t be the same “when I finished reading the not, I was so
angry I tore it up and throw it in to the fireplace. I should have never done that because
Abebech was standing right behind me. Then she made me pick up the pieces and put
them together like a puzzle. That was the last time I made a mistake like that Abebech is
not always a mean person. Usually on Sunday she is in a good frame of mind Early in the
morning she attends church service and then returns home to finish cooking dinner. After
the dinner is eaten, we all sit down and talk. The evening ends with one of Abebech’s
favorite desserts Abebech is really a wonderful person. You just have to understand her.
She is now ninety –one years old years old. Those are a lot of years of sweet grouchiness.
Model 2
The Old Fence
The old fence stands weathered and tired. It has been holding cattle in the field ever since
the farmer put it up. The cows have occasionally tried to break through, but they have lost
their battles, only the small yearlings have been able to squeeze under the fence.
The poles stand rotten and weary they are lined up in a sporadic order. The spaces
between are not equal and their heights differ greatly. Some have pulled loose
*
Hide. The line of fence looks much like a parade of weary beaten solders who have been
defeated in battle and are lining up for their last breath of honor before they are shot and
killed.
In several places on the fence the barbed wire has been cut or bent out of shape. But
neither the rain and rust nor the cattle’s fury has made the wire calm or dangerous. Sharp

Basic Writing Skill (FLEn-1013)

erect pins still show their warning of power many times they have acted as a catalyst
between the cows and their angered emotion.
Even though the fence is old and historical, it will not last very long because there is a
new owner. He is a man of power and wealth who has big plans. A man too high to care
for the cattle or the soil. A man whose only dream is reached.

( By Foltz- Gray )
Note
Keep the following points in mind to write descriptive essay
Recognize your purpose – describing a scientific experiment or a business transaction, a
person etc.
Describe clearly, using specific details – if for example your family dog had become lost,
you could mention every distinguishing detail about your pet. Thinking about its size,
color, breed, cut of ears, and special marking, etc .

3.5 Narration
Narration is story –telling. A narrative essay tells a story through a sequence of events.
Narration differs in purpose from exposition and argument, its primary and basic appeal
is to the emotions of the reader or hearer rather than to the mind or the intellect. In
writing effective narrative essay you should.
 Select an appropriate point of view
 Follow a logical time sequence
 Use details to present the setting
 Make your characters believable
Read the following model narrative essays answer the questions that follow.
Model 1
Small –Town terror
Situated between majestic mountains and rolling hills, Benton. Is much like any other small
eastern Tennessee settlement. It was election day, and looking forward to a visit to the ice
cream shop, I accompanied my grandfather as he drove the ten- mile journey to town.

Copy© Rift Valley University Center for Distance Education Adama 86

Basic Writing Skill (FLEn-1013)

Country life offered little excitement, but that day an air of uneasiness replaced the usual
contentment one felt while passing aged buildings, their drabness contrasted sharply by a few
colorful modern improvements. Having spent the first ten years of my life here, it was easy to
detect any change in the town’s mood.

I pondered the worried expression on the faces of the few people we saw on the streets It
seemed everyone was in a hurry. There were not the usual groups gathered to exchange local
gossip Most noticeable was the absence of children.

As my grandfather’s dilapidated Ford approached the town’s only traffic light, we were
greeted –not by flashing red, yellow or green –but by uniformed National Guardsmen armed
with guns and appearing much out of place in such placid surroundings. As our vehicle
slowed to a stop. I was horrified as I saw before me a huge machine gun, pointed in our
direction . A young guardsman walked briskly to the car explained, almost apologetically. “
Sorry Sir . but we’ll have to search car ; Just routine procedure.”

As the car was being searched, we learned the reason for such drastic precautionary
measures. A man whom we knew and who was a candidate for the sheriffs office , had been
brutally murdered in the presence of his wife and daughter : It was rumored that the opposing
party was responsible for the fatal shotgun blast, and other rumors stated that explosives
would be brought into town to bomb the courthouse.

As this unbelievable information was being given, I sat petrified, trying to convince myself
that this was the same town where only yesterday , old men in dirty overalls lounged around
the courthouse , spitting tobacco and discussing the forthcoming election
Dogs and children had romped freely on the sidewalks, while women browsed in the stores
for hours without buying anything Strangely. All this had changed overnight, and the
preconceptions I had about our peaceful country and the glorious right to vote were
beginning to sound as a sour note. Marching through the streets guards with guns gave the
appearance of towns I had seen in the movies Towns which did not know freedom but
captivity.

CHAPTER FOUR
SENTENCES

4.1 Fragments

A. Fragments that starts with preposition

B. Fragments that starts with Dependent Words
C. Fragments that starts with to and a verb
D. Fragments that start with Examples or explanations
Understanding what sentence Fragments are

Definition- A sentence is a group of words that has a subject and a verb and a verb and expresses a
complete thought, independent of other sentences.

- A fragment sentence is a group of words that looks like a sentence but is missing a subject, a verb
or a complete thought.

- A fragment is only a piece of a sentence, and it is considered serious mistakes in formal writing.

Example:

 Sentence- I got home late, so I ate some cold pizza and drank a whole liter of Pepsi
 Fragment-I got home late, so I ate some cold pizza. And drank a whole liter of Pepsi.
[And drank a whole liter of Pepsi contain a verb (drank) but no subject]

Practice Finding and correcting Fragments

Fragments are missing a subject, a verb, or a complete subject, a verb, or a complete thought.
How do you find these problems in your own writing?

1. A word group that starts with a preposition.

Examples:- of prepositions: at with in

Fragment: It’s hard to find time to study. With all of my other work.

2. A word group that starts with a dependent word.

Examples: - of dependent words: after, because, who, that

Fragment: The group is meeting this morning after my first class ends.

3. A word group that starts with an-ing verb form

Examples:- ing verb forms: running, studying, listening

Copy© Rift Valley University Center for Distance Education Adama 88

Basic Writing Skill (FLEn-1013)

Fragment:- people at my company gossip making every one nervous

4. A word group that starts with ‘to’ and a verb

Examples:- of to and a verb: understand, to hear, to see

Fragment:- I asked my professor for help. To understand the difficult concept.

5. A word group that starts with an example explanation of something mentioned in the previous
sentence.

Examples:- of words that might start a fragment like. For Example such as, for instance.

Fragment:- Employees need to know of all exists from the building. For instance, the nearest first
exist.

Practice Ex:- correcting Fragments that start with preposition

Examples: - For several years when they are young children often have friends.

1. Some parents worry. About their children’s imaginary camp anions.

2. Other parents think the imaginary companions are a waste. Of the time and energy.
3. Some parents think imaginary companions are west of time and energy.
4. When children behave badly they may blame the imaginary friend for their action.
B. Fragments that start with dependent words

Defn:- A dependent word is the first word in a dependent clause.

Sentence:- We got home early because we left early.

[Because is a dependent word introducing the dependent clause we left early]

A dependent clause cannot be a sentence because it doesn’t express a complete thought, it has a
subject and a verb. When ever a dependent word starts what you think is a sentence, stop to check for
a subject, a verb, and a complete thought.

Fragment:- Since I moved I have eaten out every day.

[Since I moved has a subject (I) and a verb (moved), but it doesn’t express a

Complete thought]

Common Transitional words

- after - since - where

-although - So that -Whether

Copy© Rift Valley University Center for Distance Education Adama 89

Basic Writing Skill (FLEn-1013)

-as - that - which

-because - though - while

-before - unless - who/whose

- even though - until

- how - what(ever)

- if - when (ever)

When a word group starts with whom, whose, or which, it is not complete sentence unless it is a
question.

Fragment- That is the police officer. Who gave me a ticket last week?

Questions-Who gave you a ticket last week?

Correct a fragment that starts with a dependent word by connecting it to the sentence before and after
it.

If the dependent clause is joined to the sentence before it, you do not usually need to put a comma in
front of it. If the dependent clause is joined to the sentence after it, put a comma after the dependent
clause.

Example.

 He fiddled with the lock for how before he lost his temper.

 Since he lost his job six months a go my tenant has not paid the rent.

C Fragments that start with- ing verb form

Defn:- An-‘ing’ verb form is the form of a verb that ends in-‘ing’ walking, writing, running unless it
has a helping verb (was walking, was writing, was running) it can not be a complete verb in a
sentence-sometimes an-‘ing’ verb form is used at the beginning of a complete sentence.

 Sentence: Walking is good exercise. [The-‘ing’ verb form walking is subject: is the verb]. The
sentence expresses a complete thought.

 Sometimes an ‘ing’ verb form introduces a fragment when an ‘ing’ verb form starts what you think
is a sentence. Stop, and check it for a subject, verb, and a complete thought.

Fragment: I was running as fast as I would. Hopping to get there on time.

[Hopping to get there on time lacks a subject and a verb]

Copy© Rift Valley University Center for Distance Education Adama 90

Basic Writing Skill (FLEn-1013)

* Correct: a fragment that starts with an –‘ing’ verb form either by adding whatever sentence
elements are missing (usually a subject and helping verb) or by connecting it to the previous or the
next sentence. Usually, you will need to put a comma. Before, and after the fragment to join it to the
complete sentence.

*Fragment- I was running as fast as I could. Hopping to get there on time [Hopping to get there on
time locks a subject and a verb]

*Corrected: I was running as fast as I could, hopping to get there on time.

*Corrected: I was running as fast as I could I was still hoping to get there on time

 D- Fragments that start with ‘to’ and ‘a verb’

- When what you think is a sentence begins with ‘to’ and a ‘verb’ you need to make sure that it is not
a fragment.

Examples:-

*Fragment:- Each week the newspapers runs a consumer watch. To tell readers

about potential scams.

 If a word group begins with ‘to’ and a ‘verb’ it must have another verb, or it is not a complete
sentence. When you see a word group that begins with ‘to’ and ‘a verb’ first check to see if there is
another verb. If there is not another verb, it is a fragment.

Examples:-

Sentence- To run a complete marathon was my goal. [To run is the subject: was is the verb]

Fragment: Cheri got underneath the car. To change the oil.

[To change is not the verb, and there is not another verb in the word group]

 To correct a fragment that starts with ‘to’ and ‘ a verb’ join it to the sentence before, or after it, or
add the missing sentence element.

Example:-

Fragment:- Cheri got underneath the car. To change the oil.

Corrected:- Cheri got underneath the car to change the oil.

Corrected:- Cheri got underneath the car.

Corrected:- Cheri got underneath the car the needed to change the oil.

E. Fragments That Start With Examples or Explanation

Basic Writing Skill (FLEn-1013)

-As you reread what you have written, pay special attention to groups of words that are examples or
explanations of information’s you presented in the previous sentence. They may be fragments.

* Fragment:- I thought of ways to get out my cocked apartment for example

through the window.

* Fragment:- I don’t like climbing out of windows. Especially from the third floor backs
subjects, verbs and complete thoughts]

- Reread your two sentences to make save they each contain a subject and a verb and express a
complete thought.

S V . S V

Independent clause Independent clause

*Fused Sentence:- I interviewed a candidate for a job save me the “dead fish”

*Comma splice:- The “dea fish” is a limp handshake. The person plops her hand into You

- This last type of fragment is harder to recognize because there is no single word or kind of word to
look for. Here are a few starting words that may signal a fragment those examples or explanations do
not always start with these words.

- Especially - like

- For example - Such as

4.2. Run-Ons – Two sentences joined incorrectly.

Understanding What Run-Ons Are

Defn:- A sentence is a group of words that has a subject and a verb and expresses a complete
thought. Sometimes two sentences are joined to form one longer sentence.

Defn: - Each sentence within the larger sentence is called an independent.

The college offers financial aid, and it encourages students to apply.

Copy© Rift Valley University Center for Distance Education Adama 92

Basic Writing Skill (FLEn-1013)

Defn: - A run-on is two complete sentences that are joined incorrectly and written as one sentence.
There are two kinds of run-Ons. A fused sentence is two complete sentences joined without any
punctuation at all.

Fused sentence- Smoking is a bad habit it can kill you.

Two sentences must be joined with the proper punctuation: Fusing them together with no punctuation
creates a run-on error.

Defn: - A comma splice is two complete sentences joined by only a comma.

Comma: my mother smoked continuously, she life one

Splice: Cigarette off another.

 Two sentences must be joined with the proper punctuation and sometimes with a connecting word,
called a coordinating as well. Splice them together with only a comma creates a run-on-error.

Practice Finding and Correcting Run-Ons

- To find run-ons, flows on each sentence in your writing, one at a time.

- Until you get used to finding the run-ons (or until you don’t make the error anymore), this step will
take extra time. But if you spend the extra time, you’re writing will improve.

 Once you have found a run-on, there are four ways to correct it

Four ways to correct a run-on

1. Add a period

Summary For Unity Detail and Coherence

To revise your writing, you will need to reread it carefully with an objective and critical eye. You
may need to read what you have written several times before deciding what changes would improve
it. Remember to consider your audience and your purpose and focus on three areas:- unity

- detail and
- Coherence

A. Revise for unity

Basic Writing Skill (FLEn-1013)

Defn Unity in writing means that all the points you make are related to your main point, they are
united in support your main point. As you draft a paragraph or an essay, you may detour from your
main point.

Without even being aware of it, as the writer of the paragraph did with the underline sentences.

B. Revise for coherence

- Even if you have expressed all of your points and arranged them in a logical order your writing may
still seen choppy and your ideas may be hard to follow.

- Defn. Coherence in writing means that all your point and details connect to form a whole. In other
words, even when the points and details are assembled in an order that makes sense, they still need
“glue” to connect them.

- Coherence in writing in writing helps readers see how one point leads to another a piece of writing
that lacks coherence can sound like a string of unrelated statements.

- Individual ideas should be so well arranged and connected that they leave readers with a clear
overall impression. Two major devices can help you make sure that your writing is coherent.

1. Transitional words, phrases, and sentences (connections that link one idea

to another)

2. Repeated key words-(Words related to your main point that link repeated throughout the
paragraph or essay.

-Here are two paragraphs, one that is not coherent and one that is, Read them and notice how much
easier the second paragraph is to follow.

Both paragraphs make the same points. But the transition (underlined) and repeated key words
(circled) in the second paragraph help “hold it together”

Not Coherent

- It is not difficult to get organized-it makes discipline to stay organized. All you need to do is follow
a few simple ideas. You must decide what your priorities are and do these tasks first. You should ask
yourself everyday, what is the most important goal I have to accomplish? Make the time to do it. You
need a personal system for keeping track if time things. Making lists, keeping records, and using a
schedule help you remember what you need to do. It’s a good idea not to let belongings and
obligations. Stack up. Get rid of professions you don’t need put items away every time you use them.
And don’t take on more responsibilities than you can handle. It isn’t a mastery; isn’t just good sense.
