What Is It

On
The places on Earth can be located using a coordinate system or

m
geographic coordinate system. A coordinate system or geographic
coordinate system is a method for describing and identifying the position of

ea
a geographic location of a point on the earth’s surface, using spherical

tT
measures of latitude and longitude. These are measures of the angles (in
degrees) from the center of the earth to a point on the earth’s surface. In the

en
geographic coordinate system, the sphere is divided into equal parts called
degrees. Each degree is subdivided into 60 minutes with each minute
composed of 60 seconds. The geographic coordinate system consists of m
op
latitude and longitude lines. Each line of longitude runs north-south and
measures the number of degrees east or west of the prime Meridian. Lines
l
ve

of latitude run east-west and measures the number of degrees north or

south of the equator. The equator is at angle of 0 degrees latitude. Often, the
De

northern hemisphere has positive measures of latitude and the southern

hemisphere has negative measures of latitude. Longitude measures angles
he

in an east-west direction and traditionally based on the Prime Meridian,

yt

which is an imaginary line running from the North Pole through Greenwich,
England to the South Pole.
db

Latitude implies the geographic coordinates that determine the

te

distance of a point north and south of the equator. The lines of the latitude
run horizontally and it is measured in degrees (00). The equator is zero
es

degree (00) latitude. The lines of the latitude locate places North or South of
aT

the Equator. The North Pole is 90 degrees (900) N Latitude and the South
Pole is 90 degrees (900) S Latitude. Latitude lines are also called parallels
ph

because on a globe, latitude lines never touch each other thus they are
parallel to each other. Longitude alludes to the geographic coordinate which
Al

identifies the distance of a point east and west of the Prime Meridian. The
lines of the longitude run vertically. It is also called Meridians. The Prime
Meridian is found in Greenwich, England. The Prime Meridian is zero
degree (00) longitude. It is the measurement that tells you, how far you are
from east or west of the Prime Meridian. The Prime Meridian has 00 and
1800. The International Date Line (IDL) split the earth into Western

Hemisphere and Eastern Hemisphere. Thus, the lines of longitude are not
parallels (like latitude lines) since they actually all touch each other on the
north and south of the earth.
