PHYSICS
Motion in Two Dimensions:
Horizontal and Vertical

Week 1-2
HORIZONTAL TRANSLATION
- is a straight motion along a
horizontal plane
(x-component)
HORIZONTAL TRANSLATION
If acceleration is zero, (a = 0) , the
velocity of the body remains constant
throughout the motion, thus:
Vfx = Vix
dx
Vix =
t
HORIZONTAL TRANSLATION
If acceleration is constant, Vfx = Vix
2 2
Vf𝑥 = Vix + 2adx
Note:
Vfx = Vix + at use + if accelerating
and – if decelerating
1 2
dx = Vixt + at
2
VERTICAL TRANSLATION
- is a straight motion along a
vertical plane
(y-component)
VERTICAL TRANSLATION
in this type of motion, acceleration
cannot be equal to zero, since the
velocity of a body moving in vertical
motion, increases as it goes down
and decreases as it goes up.
VERTICAL TRANSLATION
The following formula will be used.
2 2
Vf𝑦 = Viy + 2gdy
Note:
Vfy = Viy + gt use + if going down
1 2 and – if going up
dy = Viyt + gt
2
VERTICAL TRANSLATION
If the acceleration of the body is not
given, then it is presumed that the
acceleration to be used is the
acceleration due to gravity,
𝟐
g = 9.8 m/𝒔
FREE FALLING BODY
A body is said to be
free falling if the initial Vfy2 = 2gdy
velocity is zero. The
Vfy = gt
acceleration of a free
1 2
falling body is due to dy = 2gt
gravity.
Sample Problem
1. A ball is dropped from a building 122.5m
high. If the mass of the ball is 10 g, after
what time will the ball strike the ground?
Note: since the ball was dropped, Vi = 0
Sample Problem

2. A ball is dropped from a 40-meter-tall

building's roof, it will reach the ground
at what velocity?
Sample Problem
3. An elevator descends from rest with
2
an acceleration of 5 m/s until it
achieves a velocity of 15m/s.
Determine the time required and the
distance traveled.
CURVILINEAR TRANSLATION
- is a motion along a curve path
either on the vertical plane or
horizontal plane
- Includes PROJECTILE MOTION
The discussion will be resumed
on Thursday.
