DYNAMICS OF RIGID

BODIES
Engr. Vill Racca
DYNAMICS  Is a branch of Mechanics that deals with bodies in motion.
Motion  Is a progressive change of position of the body.
Rectilinear  A type of motion in which the body moves in a straight line or is
Motion moving in the direction parallel to its displacement.
a. Uniform Motion – a motion with constant speed or velocity
 S = Vt V = uniform speed or velocity

b. Uniformly Accelerated Motion – a motion with constant change in velocity or of

uniform acceleration.
 S = Vot ± ½ at2
 Vf2 = Vo2 ± 2as
 Vf = Vo ± at
Rectilinear  S = [(Vo + Vf)/2] * t

Motion Where:
Vf = Final Velocity
Vo = Initial Velocity
S = Distance Traveled
t = time
A = acceleration

Note: Use (+) when the body is accelerating, Vf > Vo

Use (-) when the body is decelerating, V f < Vo
c. Free-falling Bodies
 h = Vot ± ½ gt2
 Vf = Vo ± gt
 Vf2 = Vo2 ± 2gs

Where: g is (+) when going down otherwise (-)

Vf = final velocity
Rectilinear Vo = 0 when dropped
Motion h = height
t = time
g = 9.81 m/s2 ; 32.2 ft/s2

Example no. 1
Example no. 2
 A stone is thrown vertically upward and returns to earth in 10
seconds,
Example no. 3 a. What is the initial velocity?
b. How high did it go?
c. At what time did it travel until it reaches the highest point?
 Juan dropped a ball from the top of a tower 80ft high at the same
instant Pedro threw a ball upward from the ground with an initial
Example no. 4 velocity of 40fps.
a. When do the balls pass each other?
b. Where do the balls pass each other?
 Baby M threw a gold bar projected vertically upward from the top
of a 120-m high tower at a velocity of 36 m/s.
Activity no. 1 a. How high will the gold bar go reckoned from the ground?
b. How long will it take to reach the top?
c. How high will it be above the ground after 9 sec?
