Projectile

Engr. Vill Racca

What is a PROJECTILE?

• Projectile – a body which after being given an initial

velocity (with an initial angle of release), is allowed
to travel under action of gravity alone.

For Maximum Height:

Note: “t” is the time of flight from the moment of release to the
maximum height.

Note: “t” is the time of flight from the moment of release to the
maximum point of impact in the x-direction.
General Equation of Projectile

• “y” is positive for projectile

that hits above point of
release
• “y” is negative for
projectile that hits below
the point of release
• When y=0; then x=R
• When θ = 0 degrees; then
y=ymax

Example no. 1

• A projectile is fired at the top of a 30m building. An angle of 20o

with the horizontal. If the muzzle velocity of the projectile is
300m/s, how long will it take for the projectile to reach the
ground?
Example no. 2

• A ball is thrown at an angle of 30o to the horizontal and lands on

the edge of a building 5 meters high. If the building is 20m away,
determine the initial velocity of the ball.
Example no. 3

• A baseball batter hits his home run ball with a velocity of 110 ft/s
at an angle of 45o above the horizontal. If the ball hits the top of a
screen at 300ft mark, and bounces to the crowd, how high above
the ground is the top of the screen
