JOURNAL WEEK 9

NUMBER OF JOURNAL :9

DATE : 24 TH MARCH 2024 – 28ST MARCH 2024

TOPIC : IMPROVING THE QUALITY OF CLASSROOM

INSTRUCTION

1.0 FOCUSED ISSUE

The focused issue of this week is improving the quality of classroom

instruction. Students’ participation in classes is a major concern for me and there has
been a small improvement in which I started to receive questions from students who
never asked me before to ask regarding the task that they were assigned with. I
noticed that some of them were facing difficulties to understand the instructions given
thus I believe this issue happened due to the low quality of classroom instruction from
me to my students.

2.0 ANALYSIS

As I was analyzing the way I gave out instructions to the students, I could not
help but notice that the major problem was because of my lengthy words which
caused confusion to the students. I thought that I was giving specific instructions
which help them to understand more about the notes and tasks given, but I might be
wrong on that part. One of the options I have at the moment is to improve the way I
construct the instructions to ensure that none of my students lose their interest in
doing the task and start to ignore the lesson as they think that they could not catch
up with the pace.

According to Kim, Raza, & Seidman (2019), teacher instructional quality

should be given more attention especially when considering 21st century learning.
The classroom instructional quality serves as a critical lever for students’ educational
change and their internal motivation in learning certain subjects. Instructions should
be short, simple and contain all the information in detail. Why? Because if it is too
simple, it makes it harder for pupils to understand the needs of the task and if it is too
long, pupils begin to lose interest in doing the task.
3.0 SUGGESTIONS FOR IMPROVEMENTS

The following strategies to improve participation in virtual classroom are referred from
Reis (2019):
 Use the simplest word for them to understand the instructions.
 Indulge the local standards like their culture or daily routine in giving
instructions to help them make the relation.
 Do not feel compelled to cover all specific topics in the syllabus. Be specific
on which one topic and not on all topics at once. There will be too many
instructions to fit in an hour classroom.
 Encourage discussion by asking questions dealing with “how”, “why”, and
“what if” to help pupils understand the flow of the lesson.

4.0 PERIOD OF TIME TO RESOLVE THE ISSUE

24th March 2024 -28th March 2024

5.0 REFLECTION

In conclusion, there are many areas that I need to improve, especially the way
I give out classroom instructions to the students. My priority is to ensure that they get
the gist of the lesson rather than not get anything at all.
