BASIC LINER SYSTEMS
Liner
Liner is a section of casing that is
suspended downhole in existing
casing. In most cases, it extends
downward into open hole, and
overlaps the existing string 200 to
400 ft and is cemented in place.

Scab Liner
Scab liner is a section of casing
used to repair existing damaged
casing. It may be cemented or
sealed at the top and bottom.

FLEX-LOCK ™ HYDRAULIC SET

LINER HANGER
Product No. 292-50
The Flex-Lock Hydraulic Set Liner Hanger
incorporates all of the benefits and features
of the Mechanical Set Flex-Lock. This unique
liner hanger is installed in the liner string by
mounting the hanger directly on a joint of the
liner or on a PBR. In effect, the liner casing
is the mandrel of the Flex-Lock. The hanger
provides premium glass-filled Teflon ® piston
seals within the hydraulic cylinder. The seals
have a pressure rating of 10,000 psi at 400°F.
A high-strength alloy cylinder provides maxi-
mum burst and collapse resistance.
The hydraulic version is ideal for liner
applications where corrosion-resistant alloys
are incorporated in the liner casing. The kit
can be installed on the CRA casing, which
results in a huge cost savings when com-
pared to a solid-body type hanger.
The hanger is set by applying pressure
through the run-in string. A setting ball is
circulated or dropped to a ball seat in the
landing collar. Applied pressure acts on an
internal piston, moving the slips up the cones
to the set position.

The Flex-Lock Hydraulic Set Rotating Liner
Hanger incorporates a tapered roller bearing
assembly which allows the liner to be rotated
in the set position while cementing the liner.

The HSR Hydraulic Set Rotating Liner Hanger is a rotating version of the Hyflo II

FLEX-LOCK ™ MECHANICAL SET

LINER HANGER
Product No. 292-40
This unique liner hanger is installed in the liner
string by mounting the hanger on a joint of the
liner casing or on a PBR. In effect, the liner
casing is the mandrel of the Flex-Lock. The
distribution of radial load is transferred
circumferentially into the slip seat to eliminate
load stresses to the hanger body, thus eliminat-
ing the possible collapse of the body due to
excess loading. Excellent circulation is achieved
through fluid courses located in the slip seat and
behind the slips. The hanger will provide the
same amount of flow area in both the run-in and
set position.
Due to its unique design, the Flex-Lock hanger
can reduce the costs of running corrosion-resis-
tant alloy liner strings; the hanger is slipped over
the CRA casing, not built from CRA material.

The Flex-Lock Mechanical Set Rotating Liner
Hanger has all of the unique and superior fea-
tures offered in the standard mechanical set
Flex-Lock, yet offers a tapered roller bearing
system which allows the liner to be rotated during
cementation of the liner. The hanger can be
rotated at higher RPM than liner hangers incor-
porating the conventional ball or journal bearing
system.

MECHANICAL SET HANGER

The RCM Mechanical Set Rotating Liner
Hanger is designed for medium-length
liners and provides a means to rotate the
liner string during cementing. The unique
tapered roller bearing is designed for
long life in an extremely hot environ-
ment. The liner can be rotated at higher
speeds than hangers using conventional
journal bearings.
An automatic J-cage allows the
hanger to be reset if required. The
hanger is set by right-hand rotation using
a 2RH Modified Setting Tool. Once the
hanger is set, the setting tool is released.
Torque can then be applied to the liner.
When cementing of the liner is complete,
the run-in string is picked up out of the
liner top.
• Non-welded construction

D ™ LINER HANGER/PACKER
Product No. 293-08
The D Liner Hanger/Packer serves as
both hanger and packer when the liner is
not to be cemented. As the liner is hung,
the seal is compressed to pack off against
the casing ID. The D Liner Hanger/Packer
is available with either left or right-hand,
open-bottom, automatic J-cage.
Normally used as the lower liner
packer on a scab liner to isolate damaged
casing, a CPH Liner Packer is used to
isolate the top portion of casing.
A C-2 Setting Tool with packer setting
dogs is used to carry in the liner. The D
Liner Hanger/Packer is set by right or left-
hand rotation. Weight is applied to set the
packer seal. When the CPH Liner Packer
is used, the setting tool is released with
right-hand rotation and then picked up,
allowing the setting dogs to rest on top of
the CPH packer. Set-down weight will set
the CPH packer seal and hold-down slips.
Materials suited for H2S service are
available on request.

CPH ™ LINER PACKER

The CPH Liner Packer is a high perfor-
mance liner-top packer set by applying
set-down weight to the setting dogs on
the liner setting tool. The packer pro-
vides an effective annular seal between
the top of the liner and the casing, pre-
venting formation breakdown, loss of
cement slurry, and gas migration above
the liner top during cement curing.
Tieback sleeves are available in 6,
10, 15, and 20 ft lengths.
Maximum seal integrity is assured by
a three-piece rubber sealing element
contained by metal back-up rings. Hold-
down slips and an internal body-lock ring
maintain seal compression and prevent
floating of short liners.
Materials suited for H2S service are
available on request.

SLP-R ™ SLOTTED
LINER PACKER

The SLP-R Slotted Liner Packer is a
medium-duty liner hanger packer that is
designed primarily for running slotted
liner in horizontal well applications. The
SLP-R will affect a seal at the liner top
and is capable of suspending moderate
liner loads. The liner packer is run in on
drill pipe or tubing attached to the SLP
Hydraulic Release Running Tool (Prod-
uct No. 265-32), and is set by applied
pressure through the run-in string. A
secondary mechanical release system
is incorporated in the running tool, should
the hydraulic system malfunction. The
SLP-R can be straight pull released with
a fishing spear if desired.

The Hyflo III Liner Packer is designed to
be a medium-to-high performance liner
top isolation packer. The packer has a
one-piece seal element with bonded
metal back-ups and are rated to 5,000

NSP ™ LINER PACKER

The NSP Liner Packer is a medium duty
liner top packer set by applying set down
weight to the setting dogs on the liner
setting tool. The NSP is unique in that the
three-piece packing element is encased
in a metal sleeve. The metal sleeve
allows extremely high circulation rates
(tested at 20 barrels per minute) to be
pumped by the packing elements with no
damage to the elastomers. This packer
can also be utilized on liner hanger appli-
cations where the liner is rotated to im-
prove the cementing of the liner. When
setting the NSP, whether mechanically
or hydraulically, the packing elements
are forced out from under the metal
sleeve and into contact with the casing
ID. The NSP also incorporates an exter-
nal hold down and internal body lock ring
to maintain seal compression.
Tieback extensions are available in
6,10, 15, and 20 ft lengths. Materials

request.

JM ™ LINER The JM Tieback Packer can be re-

The JM Liner Tieback Packer is a liner-
top packer that is most frequently run on
drill pipe using a mechanical setting tool
and a liner setting sleeve with tieback
extension. The packer is run to the top of
an existing liner tieback extension, and
the seal stem is inserted until seated and
pressure tested down the drill pipe. Ad-
ditional set-down weight shears the re-
lease pins and sets the packer seal. The
setting tool is released with right-hand
rotation.
The tieback stem on the JM Tieback
Packer has three sets of glass-filled
Teflon® Chevron seals for severe pres-
sure applications.
A special collet lock nose feature is
incorporated in the setting shoulder, pre-

Liner Setting Sleeves are used in con-
junction with the setting tool to carry the
liner to setting depth. Three types of

LINER SETTING TOOLS

Liner setting tools are used to run, set, and manipulate liners during cementing
operations and are designed to compress weight set packers after cementing
operations have been completed. The roller-bearing race and floating-nut principle
furnished in all of the liner running tools provide the most reliable system for releasing
drill pipe from liners.
Baker has liner setting tools to run left or right-hand set mechanical liner hangers,
hydraulic set liner hangers, and weight set packers.
There are three basic setting tool types: C2, HR and 2RH.

C2 ™ SETTING TOOL

The C2 Setting Tool is used to run and
cement liners and compress weight- set
packers after cementing. A splined, left-
hand threaded nut engages left-hand
threads in the setting sleeve to support
the liner as it is run. The tool is supported
by a bearing-race system to provide easy
release by right-hand rotation after the
liner is hung. A sealing packoff system
(inverted swab cups, flapper valve as-
sembly, PBR seal unit, or RS packoff)
prevents upward flow around the tool
during cementing.
The liner wiper plug (attached to the
setting tool or suspended in the plug
holder bushing) is released when the
drill pipe pump-down plug lands in the
liner wiper plug and shears the holding
pins or lugs.
If a weight set top packer is to be set
after cement displacement, the setting
tool is raised until the setting dogs are
above the packer setting sleeve. Then
weight is applied to set the packer.

The C Liner Swivel is run below J-cage, left-handed
set mechanical hangers to permit setting the hanger
even if the liner is stuck. Without the swivel, a stuck
liner may prevent the rotation required to release
the J-cage and slips. The swivels are available with

set shoe, the landing collar provides the seat and Type I Landing Collar

During cementing, the Liner Wiper Plug separates cement
from the displacing fluid. The Type I Plugs are shear-
pinned to the bottom of the setting tool; Type II Plugs are

the wiper plug, the buildup in pressure shears the pins and
the entire assembly moves down the liner. After cleaning
the liner behind the cement, the wiper plug lands and
latches in the landing collar.

LF ™ FOUR PLUG SYSTEM

The LF Four Plug System consists of two
liner wiper plugs assembled in tandem
on a colleted mandrel. Two drill pipe
plugs, with varied diameter latching
noses, are used to complete the system.
The components can be run either as a
Type I or II.
The primary benefit to running the LF
system is to isolate cement from the
drilling fluids during displacement for im-
proved liner cementing. The first pump
down plug and casing wiper plug is run
ahead of the cement to ensure a positive
cleanup of the drillstring and liner casing.
Once the plug lands and latches, the
inner pump down plug shears out allow-
ing cement to be displaced out the bot-
tom of the liner. The second plugs are
dropped behind the cement column and
latches in the first casing plug, providing
a back pressure seal.
The LF Four Plug System is not de-
pendent on shear pressures for proper
function and is compatible with all BOT
liner products. It can be drilled out with
all types of bits.

EQUIPMENT
Installing liner cementing accessories inside
the liner, rather than making them up in the
liner, is a new concept in liner casing strings.
This product line is based on one insert seal
unit for each liner string ID. By various
modifications, this one drillable insert unit is
converted into: cementing packoffs, guide
shoes, landing collars, and float valves.
The insert unit is a compact aluminum
module with a 360° aluminum slip. The unit
also includes elastomer and metal-to-metal
seals. In addition, this equipment conforms
to all API Class 3 float equipment require-
ments.

INSERT INSTALLATION
Depending on the final insert configuration
(packoff, landing collar, guide shoe, or float
valve), accessory components are added to
the top or the bottom of the insert unit. After
the insert unit and its setting tool are posi-
tioned in the liner ID, hydraulic pressure from
a small hand pump is applied to the setting
tool, setting the insert unit’s slip.

The LC Combination Plug Dropping Head

The TD ™ Cementing Head is used in
liner hanger cementing operations to
contain the drill pipe plug until it is
released to the casing wiper plug.
This cementing head has drill pipe
connections that allow the weight of
the liner and drill pipe to be picked up
through the head. The drill pipe plug
is released by turning the arm 180°
from the lock to drop position. The
plugs can be released while circulat-
ing through the head. An internal
bypass eliminates the need for valves
and external manifold.
When cementing a well using the
LF Four Plug System (Product No.
269-25), the TD Head can be placed
above the LC Plug Dropping Head
(Product No. 278-20) to allow two drill
pipe plugs to be released. Two TD
Heads can be stacked, and a TD
Swivel (Product No. 278-25) can also
be used for a four plug cementing
system.

The TD Swivel is used in conjunction
with the TD Cementing Head (Prod-
uct No. 278-28) when cementing a
liner. The TD Swivel has drill pipe
connections both top and bottom and
a swivel assembly that will remain
static while rotating the drill string
through the assembly. The swivel
portion incorporates a double set of
seals and 4-point contact ball bear-
ings to allow for easy rotation.

DROPPING SUB

The Positive Ball Dropping Sub is used to
release varied sizes of setting balls to a ball
seat downhole. This can be accomplished
without breaking a drill pipe connection at
the surface or by removing a hammer union
cap. The ball is enclosed in a recess unaf-
fected by the flow of fluids and is released
with a simple turn of the handle. The handle
is locked during the circulation period, thus
preventing possible premature release of
the setting ball. A counterclockwise turn of
the handle will confirm the presence of a ball
without prematurely releasing. The sub is
designed to drop varied sizes of balls, rang-
ing from 1.25 to 2.25 diameter.
