ABOUT THE COLLEGE
Sadakathullah Appa College is an
Aided, Autonomous and Muslim Minority
Institution affiliated to Manonmaniam
Sundaranar University, Tirunelveli
(Tamil Nadu, South India), and is run by
Sad akath ullah Ap pa Edu cationa l
Society. It has been offering educational
services to students who belong to
various communities for 53 years. The
Golden Jubilee Celebration was hosted
in 2023. The College was accredited by
NAAC at an A++ Grade with a CGPA of
3.56 in the IV Cycle in 2023. The
Autonomous Status conferred upon the
College has been extended up to 2033.
It features in the 151-200 Rank Band in
the NIRF India Rankings.
ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT
The Research Department of English
offers B.A.(Shift - I and Shift - II), M.A.,
and Ph.D Programmes. The Department
teaches Courses in English Literature,
Language, Translation, Journalism and
Media Studies. The Department was
upgraded as a Research Department in

Refugees are stateless, rootless
and homeless individuals who seek
asylum in a neighbouring country or a
country that welcomes them. They fall
under cat egories such as Forced
Migrants, Asylum Seekers and Internally
Displaced People. Seminal Resources
pertinent to the fundamentals of the
Phenomenon include Oxford Handbook
of Refugee Studies (2014) and Refugee :
A Short Introduction (OUP-2020). The
United Nations High Commissioner for
Refugees (UNHCR) was established on
December 14, 1950 by the United Nations
General Assembly. Its primary purpose is
to protect and assist refugees and to seek
long-term solutions for their displacement.
The Universal Declaration of Human
Rights (UDHR) is another milestone in the
history as the principles of it are highly
relevant to the plight and predicament of
those who are displaced and seek
asylum. The Refugee Studies Centre
(RSC) at the University of Oxford was
established in 1982. Since its founding,
the RSC has played a crucial role in
advancing research, education and policy
discussions related to forced migration
and refugee studies.
Refugee Literature reflects on the
rich, diverse and complex experiences of
individuals displaced by conflicts, political
unrest and other scenarios. Several
notable works provide insights on refugee
experience. White Teeth by Zadie Smith
touches upon themes of multiculturalism,
identity and the immigrant experience in
contemporary Western Societies.
Ngozi Adichie provides a perspective on
the immigrant experience in the United
States, addressing issues of race, identity
and belonging. The Adam of Two Edens, a
poetry collection by Mahmoud Darwish, is
celebrated for its lyricism and political
depth. Mornings in Jenin by Susan
Abulhawa offers a powerful portrayal of
the Palestinian experience through the
lens of one family. Out of Place by Edward
Said provides a personal narrative of his
life as a Palestinian exile. Men in the Sun,
a short-story collection by Ghassan
Kanafani, depicts the struggles of
refugees and the impact of displacement
on identity formation. Exit West by Mohsin
Hamid explores the use of magical realism
to depict the challenges and opportunities
of migration. What is What by Dave
Eggers tells the story of a refugee's
journey from Sudan to the United States,
highlighting the challenges encountered
by refugees. Brooklyn by Colm Tóibín
deals with the emotional and cultural
challenges underwent by immigrants.
By delving deep into the realms of
Refugee Studies, this platform is provided
to address the refugee crisis and to
empathize with them. The deliberations
would throw light on how the migrated
people explore their self and subjectivity,
and transcend the fixed notions of the self,
home, nation and nationality in the wake of
multiculturalism and transnationalism.
The platform also intends to offer fruitful
solutions to overcome the miseries of
displaced populations across the world.
