Let’s do some physics now…..

Rotational Motion
(Chapter-8)

Our Learning Goals:

• To learn about rotational motion and its importance in our life.
• Discussion of angular quantities: Angular velocity, Angular
acceleration and Angular momentum
• Equations of angular motion under constant angular acceliration.

7
A quick questions:
Question-1: How important is rotational motion for us?
Answer: (A) Not so important.
(B) Somewhat important, affects daily life to some extent.
(C) Important, affects our life to a significant extent.
(D) Very important, it’s difficult to imagine life without it.
(E) Life that we know cannot sustain without it.

Circular motion! Rotational motion

12
Before we start, let’s revisit “Equations of Linear
Motion” which you have learned in your high
school.

13
Linear Motion:

Equations of motion

14
Rotational Motion:
In purely rotational motion, all points on the object move in circles
around the axis of rotation.

15
Rotational Motion:
Angular Quantities: To describe rotational motion, we
define angular quantities such as angular displacement,
angular velocity and angular acceleration. They are
analogous to linear displacement, linear velocity and linear
acceleration, respectively.

16
Rotational Motion:

Correspondence between Linear and Rotational Quantities:

17
Lecture MCQ-1 (19):
Do angular velocity and angular acceleration have the same units?

Answer:
(a) Yes.
(b) No.
(c) Yes only for small values of angular velocity.
(d) Angular quantities don’t have units.

18
Before we proceed with angular quantities, let’s
revisit the definition of angle,

Angle: Angle is measured in radians t=0

(rad) is defined as,

where r is radius and l is arc length.

t=t

• When l = r, then q = 1 rad

• 1 revolution = 360°= 2p rad = 6.28 rad

19
Lecture Example-1:
How many degrees is one radian?

Answer:
2p rad = 6.28 rad = 360°
1 rad = (360/6.28)° = 57.3°

20
Lecture Example-2:
A bike wheel rotates 4.5 revolutions. How many radians it has rotated?

Answer:
1 revolution = 2p rad
Thus, 4.5 revolution = 4.5 ×2p rad = 9p rad = 28.3 rad

21
Lecture MCQ-1 (19):
Do angular velocity and angular acceleration have the same units?

Answer:
(a) Yes.
(b) No.
(c) Yes only for small values of angular velocity.
(d) Angular quantities don’t have units.
