Cochran’s formula:
Yamane’s Formula (1967)
-Popularly known as Slovin’s Formula
N
n= 2
1 + Ne
where: n – sample size
N – population
e – allowable error

Note: The allowable error should be 5% provided computed sample size

should not be lower than 30.
Sample Size estimating Proportion
Example 1: The researcher would like to conduct
a study on administrator’s performance in State
Universities and Colleges (SUCs) in Region VI
from which the distribution of population of
academic administrators (N) was as follows:
Aklan State University 6, Carlos A. Hilado
Memorial State College 5, Guimaras State
College 3, Iloilo State College of Fisheries 7,
Northern Iloilo Polytechnic College 9, Capiz State
University 14, University of Antique 10, Iloilo
Science and Technology University 7, and West
Visayas State University 9. Find the computed
proportion and the required number of sample of
academic administrators in every SUC. (Lachica, G.,
2020 Lecture Notes in FND 502)

Example 2: Miss Dinagyang committee member
wishes to estimate the average height of an Ilongga
who is a potential candidate for Miss Dinagyang 2018.
Last year from 300 who auditioned, the average height
was 170 cm and the standard deviation was 1.05cm.
Assuming that the heights are normally distributed, how
large a sample size is required if we want to be 95%
confident that our estimate of the population mean is
not off by more than 0.25cm? (Cartagena in MTAP-
Ambit Alam Training, 2019)
