Entry 1
Title: Helping You Understand the Placebo Effect
Topic: Medical problem

• Audio/video content (Briefly note down the main content of the

audio/video)
- The video talk about about the placebo effect, which can occur when a
placebo or fake treatment is given to someone, and they believe it is a real
treatment.
- The placebo effect can also affect clinical studies of new drugs, where study
subjects may experience an improvement in their symptoms even though they are
taking the placebo.
- To mitigate the placebo effect in clinical studies, it is important for
participants to refrain from talking about their feelings with other study
participants and to understand that new treatments being investigated may or may
not be better than existing treatments.
• My reflection (Note down what you have learnt from the audio/ video)
A, New word:
1. Placebo: A treatment without any active ingredient given as a control in
experiments or clinical trials.
2. Clinical study: A systematic evaluation of a medical treatment in humans.
3. Investigational drug: A drug being studied in a clinic trial.
4. Placebo effect: A psychological or physiological response to the administration
of a placebo.
5. Study participant: A person who volunteers to participate in a clinical study.
B, Background knowledge
1. The placebo effect happen when someone believes a treatment will work, and
consequently experiences improvements in their symptoms or health, even though
the treatment does not contain any active ingredients.

2. Clinical studies are critical in medical research as they help determine whether
new treatments are effective and safer than existing ones.
3. To minimize the risk of the placebo effect, it is important for study participants
to avoid sharing their feelings and experiences with other participants as this can
influence the results.

4. Taking an investigational drug may sound promising, but is not guarantee that it

will work.
