Planning and Pre-Production

Elisabeth Banks
Reflection
What am I making?

I am producing a video about Type 1 Diabetes. Covering all aspects of it such as what it actually is, symptoms, and how it effects those with it. I
plan to include my own personal story to show what it is like to actually live with the autoimmune disease.

Why am I making this?

I am making this because it is a very personal subject to me. When I was diagnosed, I was told about what it was and had been given some
leaflets that told me this information to along with some extra to give to friends. Looking back on it now, I would have loved a video that showed
all of this - that told me exactly what it was as well as what people have personally gone through so I would then feel less alone in how I was
emotionally and physically feeling in the coming weeks post diagnosis. Luckily, my parents knew all about it due to my Dad having it too, but if
they had no idea what it was then I know this type of video would be beneficial to teaching them as well. Overall, I just never felt like I had
enough information like this to support me at the time and would like to create a piece that would achieve this.

Who is it for?

My main target audience is teenagers with the disease as I am a teenager myself so my personal experience will be most beneficial to that age
group. The video as a whole will also be beneficial to the families of those with diabetes as it will inform them on what it is too.

Where will it be available to view?

It is possible that it could be used within the York NHS services or nationally with Diabetes UK. If this cannot happen, then I
would like to share it on various diabetes Facebook groups via YouTube.
Equipment
To film my footage I plan on using the Canon
C100 camera and to assist the camera I will
use a tripod and a boom pole to hold the
microphone out. I may also use an iPhone to
film smaller bits of footage such as filming
around the hospital, if I do this I will use either
a smaller tripod or a gimble.
All Production Resources
To film the video footage I will be using the c100 camera and possibly my iPhone. I would attach the
camera to a tripod so I do not have to hold the camera myself and so I can achieve the stable footage I
want. If my iPhone is used, I will use a small tripod or gimble to again achieve the stable footage the I
need. To put together and edit my video I will be using the adobe premiere pro software as it is super
easy to use and I have used it in the past, so I know how it works already. I will also be using the adobe
photoshop software and possibly the adobe illustrator software to great graphic pieces that will feature in
the video.

Video Timeline Ideas 1
For the layout of the documentary, I want to have a clear introduction, one half based around the
medical side, the other half around the personal side, and a strong ending before the credits. This is
because each documentary I watched for my research had a clear beginning which set out the
meanings/ reasons for the production and they all had a clear, easy to follow structure.

Style Sheet
San serif fonts are more modern, clean and relaxed whereas serif fonts are seen
San Serif + Serif  as being quite formal and respectful. As I am making a medical documentary, I
believe using a serif font will be more appropriate.

Some examples I may use:

FONT – Sitka FONT – Rockwell

Colour Scheme

For the in-video text and the graphics, I will be using different shades of blue and
possibly white. I am using these colours as blue is the signature colour for Type 1
Diabetes and I want to include this where I can, and I feel through the texts and
graphics is an appropriate option.

For the general look of the video, especially the interviews, I want them to have a
warm tone to them as this will create some calming feelings. Although medical
documentaries are usually cold in colour, I wanted to have my own take on it and
didn’t want the documentary to feel too formal and serious so I believe using
warmer tones will help give a more relaxed and light hearted overall feeling.
Audio
For the introduction and credits I would like to use some
background music to help make the footage flow better when it is
cut by cutting to the beats in the music as well as using it to set a
general tone for the whole documentary. I aim to have a more
light hearted feel to video as it is aimed at the recently diagnosed
and I do not want to make them any more uneasy or scared then
they probably already are.

I wanted to find some copy right free music, so I searched

"medical documentary music copy right free" into YouTube and
found these three possible options. The first option I liked a lot
when I first listened as it is an upbeat track with lots of beats, I
could choose from to cut my footage to. However I do feel it is a
little too slow then what I am looking for and may extend the
introductions run time by quite a bit. The second option I also liked
a lot, as again it is upbeat, however after listening to it a few more
times I think it's actually too upbeat and I feel like it could be used
in a bright summer advert instead of a medical documentary. The
third option I looked at was again upbeat, similar to the first option
but faster, and also had strong beats that I could easily cut my
footage too. I feel like this option would be the best for my
production as it gives the vibe I am going for, has a faded start
which would be a perfect way to begin my documentary, and it is
a pace which I feel I can easily work with to have as short of a run
time as possible for the introduction.
Graphics Plan 1
This style of graphic is based around one I saw in my research
TITLE as I like the style and find it to be effective.

To incorporate the signature T1D colour of blue, I decided to

ICON CORESPONDING TEXT make the background a light blue. To add to this, I have made
the title of the page a dark blue in contrast to the background as
this will make it really stand out against the light background.
CORESPONDING TEXT The icons I want to include will be placed on the left-hand side of
ICON
the page as the eye reads from left to right. The text based on
the icons (and what the interviewee is saying) I have put in the
colour black. This is to make the text different from the title and
ICON CORESPONDING TEXT the contrast with the background makes sure it stands out. I
have also placed the text in center of each box as this is what
looks the most professional and clean.

ICON CORESPONDING TEXT In the video, this would appear on a black background as a
blank page with only the title OR with the first icon and text
visible. Each section would fade onto the screen when it is being
said in the video footage. My plan is to have the audio running
ICON CORESPONDING TEXT over the graphic piece and to do this I will just unlink the video
and audio and remove the video.
Graphics Plan 2
This style of graphic is also based around one of the pieces I saw in
TITLE my research as I like the style and find it to be effective. I also mixed
in a bit of the style of my other piece that I looked at.

To incorporate the main T1D colour of blue into the design I made
   ICON
                  CORESPONDING TEXT
the background a light blue colour. I also decided to make my title
text and information text a dark blue colour which contrasts with the
background and white boxes. I have also placed the text in center of
each box as this is what looks the most professional and clean. I
   ICON
CORESPONDING TEXT decided to include white boxes behind my text and icons as I
noticed in my research this made the text stand out a lot more. I
included a faint dark blue outline around the white boxes to
minimalise the clash between the light blue in the background and
the white. I decided to place the icons in the white boxes as I
  ICON
CORESPONDING TEXT thought this made the visual side of the piece look better.

In the video, this would appear on a black background as a blank

page with only the title OR with the first icon and text visible. Each
section would fade onto the screen when it is being said in the video
   ICON
CORESPONDING TEXT footage. My plan is to have the audio running over the graphic piece
and to do this I will just unlink the video and audio and remove the
video.
Graphics Plan 3
For this design I wanted to think of something a bit different to
C          CORESPONDING TEXT
ICON
the other two while still using things I had gathered from my
research.

Like my previous designs, to incorporate the blue T1D colour

into it I made the background of each piece a light blue colour
           CORESPONDING TEXT
 ICON
and the text a contrasting dark blue colour so it clearly stands
out. I have placed the icon drawings on the left-hand side of
each box as the eye reads from left to right. I also have placed
the text in center of each box as this is what looks the most
professional and clean.
 ICON
          CORESPONDING TEXT
In the video, these would each appear separately over the top of
the corresponding footage. They would fade onto the screen as
the interviewee mentions them. I would put them in the blank
 ICON
CORESPONDING TEXT spaces that I plan to have around each interviewee.
